It’s impossible to think your way into sober living, we must live our way into sober thinking. Prior to getting sober I could explain to you the psychology behind addiction. I knew all about the causes, signs, symptoms, effects. I could list the pre-dispositions, the theoretical frameworks, the scientific reasoning, and the medical explanation for addiction. I knew all about who, what, when, where, and why. Unfortunately, and to my great disdain… none of that helped me in the slightest. I may have intellectually understood all the components of addiction and recovery, but knowing the who, what, when, where, and why but I was missing the most important piece… the HOW? Active addiction is lived, it’s survived, and so is recovery. Sure learning all about recovery, sobriety, addiction healing is great, but at the end of the day we have to put that knowledge to use. I remember thinking that there’s no way I could ever be of any use or help to someone else. It’s not that I didn’t want to be, or was unwilling to be I genuinely didn’t believe I had anything to offer. Once I had a little time under my belt I slowly learned that every experience I had, drinking to otherwise, might prove useful to someone else going through something similar. Eventually I realized that helping others, while occasionally useful to the other person, was helping me just as much of not more. It’s like the old method of learning “see one, do one, teach one.” I saw others who had what I wanted, I listened and learned how to “get it” for myself, and by showing others how I got it, I get a better grip on my own sobriety. We need to talk about rock bottom… When I first got sober I was under the impression that everyone had a rock bottom. I then quickly realized that everyone’s rock bottom looks different. For some rock bottom looks like pawning family heirlooms, homelessness, divorce, unemployment, jail time, DUI’s, losing custody of children, or some combination thereof. For others rock bottom looks different, a single blackout, an embarrassing video from a night out, or a tipsy off-handed comment at the wrong time to a loved one. You don’t have to be the worst case to be a worthy case! Rock bottom doesn’t have to mean the guy under the bridge with the brown bag; it can be the successful woman who runs her own business. I want what I want, when I want it! Back in the day, before my drinking was noticeably out of control, alcohol have me exactly what I thought I wanted… relief. I’ve always been a little impatient, very much an I want what I want when I want it kind of gal. Call it what you want, learned behavior from social constructs, a symptom of the disease of alcoholism or the inability to delay gratification… Whatever you want to call if, sobriety has helped me to tame this particular beast. When I first got sober I wanted all of the benefits sobriety had to offer, and I wanted them immediately. I wanted peace, serenity, discernment, patience, acceptance, etc. Those things didn’t just magically manifest the moment I put the bottle down. They took time, and practice. T.I.M.E. takes time.
