The worst part about anything that’s self-destructive is that it’s so intimate. You become so close with your addictions and illnesses that leaving them behind is like killing the part of yourself that taught you how to survive.

As we approach holidays and family get together season, I just want to remind my sober girlies (and whoever else needs to hear it) that your sobriety and safety matters more than what your family thinks of you for not drinking. Just keep saying no. You don't owe them a reason. Discuss boundaries if needed. And remember, if you can leave, do it when needed. Go take a drive, go take a walk, go home or to your room. If your family doesn't respect your sobriety, you don't owe them respect.
