I’m standing in my lover’s new house. We spent yesterday fixing up his space, picking up furniture, building shelves, introducing me to the cats.
Then we got very high and had way too much sex.
And then he went and bought raw fish and made us poke from scratch.
I just finished doing the dishes from yesterday, and now I’m going to the laundromat to clean the sheets (I may have dumped an entire glass of coffee on his new white sheets…) He left for work a while ago.
I feel… safe. Wanted. Cherished.
Our relationship is the weirdest slow burn. We dated in the hellscape of deep Covid 2020, right after I left my abuser and he was still in a complicated living situation with his ex.
Suffice to say, that initial relationship was short and dramatic. There was so much love, but also the container for our lives was impossible.
So we spent a year not talking, and then four years being texty friends.
And now I am getting to watch him build a life for himself, and help run a business, and he gets to watch me run all over taking photos of every single thing ever.
We don’t want or have time for enmeshment. We don’t want or have time for constant contact.
What we want is a few hours of absolute joy - exploring a mountain, eating wonderful food, curling up and watching stupid tv - that falls in the cracks of life where we can steal time together.
And we are not casual. Not at all. There is nothing simple about the way we adore each other. The trust we have built up, over five years. But we are easy. We slot into each other’s lives in a way that makes sense.
We deserve each other, and I am awed we found our way to a way to make us work.
