A year ago I had an idea to change the way we view swimming in the UK. I wanted to get people of different nationalities, shapes and sizes and also genders to step up to the plate and take on the challenge of their lives. Going from barely swimming to learning to swim a mile efficiently in the Great Swim in Salford. With the help of Swim Dem Crew, The Swim Trust, ASA and Speedo, yesterday we had our first lesson! 5 months left of the clock.. The Swimming Challenge 2015 begins!!

Welcome to the real Rio, with approx 130000 inhabitants Maré is a large favela. Notoriously split between three of the cities main drug trafficking fractions, this is possibly one of the most dangerous places in rio. I was lucky to head out with photographers from the Observertotrio situated in the favela itself. Many innocent people have died due to the occupation of the military and national forces. The question though is how do you create a unified and safe environment for the inhabitants, without so many innocent deaths occurring! To say the least it was hard to get the slr out of my bag, god bless the iPhone… (at Complexo da Maré - Favela Nova Holanda)

HERO FRIDAY:
Olaudah Equiano(c. 1745 – 31 March 1797)
Olaudah was a prominent African involved in the British movement for the abolition of the slave trade. He was enslaved as a child, purchased his freedom, and worked as an author, merchant, and explorer in South America, the Caribbean, the Arctic, the American colonies, and the United Kingdom, where he settled by 1792. His autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, depicts the horrors of slavery and influenced the enactment of the Slave Trade Act of 1807

Many talk about Jagger, I talk about Fela...
I've not kept to date with my Hero's friday. To make up for it, here is a video of the great and legendary Fela Kuti. This is rare footage taken from Calabar  one of the rainiest parts of Nigeria. Rain aside you cannot deny this Fela's passion and showmanship. The energy of the continent circulates through his pores; raw, uncontrollable, untamed and free..
