Storytime! Photo: @hawkmurphy Styling: @exhibit69 MVP: @rvds Ive been an active & booked DJ for more than half of my life ( I aint no spring chicken) and I don't see a time in the future where I wouldn't be playing music. I've dipped my toe in most things entertainment from dancing & singing, rapping, production, choreography, modelling, even had the opportunity to go to Sylvia Youngs stage school when I was in my early early teens. I did it all but would lose interest in it super fast without any real reason. I constantly got to a point in a task where I didn't care to learn anything more about it. But at the age of around 5 or 6 years old, the coolest thing I had ever seen was the Push It video by Salt N Pepa and there was Spinderella behind a set of decks caught my attention but stay to the back of my head because to me, she was a unicorn. Cut to me being around 14 at Nottinghill Carnival wid my Pops. I stood and watched DJs put 2 records on 2 turntables and control the mood of hundreds of different people. I was obsessed ever since. Never had the money for my own equipment so heading to that 'homie with the decks' yard every chance I got were my practise hours! But within 2 years of that I was a resident DJ in a Strip Club. 4 nights a week, 9pm to 5am on a Numark Twin Tray (DJs know what I'm talking about). It weren't Ministry Of Sound but it was my start. And arguably why I feel completely at ease around naked women. One day I'll tell you about my 22 women lapdance I had for my 21st birthday! More than meets the eye! With you all mostly knowing me as a DJ there is many a string to my bow. Getting into building websites over 6 years back by being broke over anything else. I always wanted a website to show off my wears but the quotes were not my kinda numbers. I'm talking between 600 and 900 pounds. All quotes were met with a 😳 but then a 🤔 because I KNEW if I just put my head down I would be able to do it myself. That DIY attitude has been my main attribute inherited from my mum. We never had big money but you damn right we had whatever we needed. Something broke? Get a book and learn how to fix it! Simples. But when it came to tech, the books all read like Latin to me. I took a few computing classes at college but it was MySpace that gave me my first look at Coding. Got more books, chilled with the computer crew, practised changing stuff digitally on our big body IBM PC in the living room (to the irritation of my Pops coz I was mashing that ting up regular), even getting the hang of MS DOS. Yep dem oldskool tings there. Through time I managed to build my first website but after losing my job could no longer afford the hosting so it was offline for a few years. I decided to get my shit together and rebuild. On New Years Day 2019 I relaunched TheSheJay.com and was proud to tell folks I did it myself (even the people who quoted me those high chest prices)! Cut to now and I'm building my own business making websites for the public as well as other digital creations and services. I really enjoying my nerd side ( my nickname given by my partner is "Tech Support") plus I've built a little portfolio of work from websites for PT's, Line Sheets for fashion brands to Press Kits for Non-Profit Organisations! So with that said, you want or need something built in a timely and professional manner without having to self your left foot to do it! Look no further than @Dot1EWeb! This mix is probably the most like me! A bit serious, full of hustle and pure Hip Hop! This is the type of hip hop I have been WAITING to come to the forefront of the scene but always was seen as underground which is all well and good if the mumble rap didn’t blow up and cloud tings a bit. The culture was built on lyricism, bravado and hungry brothers trying to feed their family by any means necessary. My 2 favourite rap group were responsible (in my eyes) for making that uncompromising sound a force in hip hop and I’m talking about The Wu Tang Clan and Mobb Deep. In particular, the first time I heard 36 Chambers it blew my mind. It was like NOTHING I had ever heard musically. From the samples to the lyrical skill and content, I was/am addicted to the relatability of it. No I wasn’t running drugs or bussin guns but I knew guys who actually lived that life. I knew it was real and I have always wondered why only the Wu n Mobb were the only ones I personally could find back then. Fast forward to now and the REAL real is back with a screw face and the smoke is super thick! Freddie Gibbs and Griselda alone have turned the page on the ‘bling bling’ attitude, rapping from an authentic place and these man have BEEN around, putting out quality product, consistently since the early to mid Noughties. Now where I come in to it is to debunk the misconception that us ladies don’t know nothing bout that side of hip hop. Let me tell you straight, WE ARE BOUT THAT SIDE OF HIP HOP! I haven’t seen no female DJ’s touch these choons in terms of putting out mixes so I had to step in and let off some heat for yall! Pour some dark liquour, roll one if you partake and catch a vibe! So may I introduce you to the #LegalDrugMoney series with part one of some REAL RAPS! www.theshejay.com/mixes www.mixcloud.com/theshejay 🎨 by @dot1eweb (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ53esZBhVM/?igshid=10am10zwqa8la

Get ready yall! I’m about to do one of those “Lockdown has taught me…” posts. So I managed to breeze through the summer stint pretty well. It was hot n sunny, I don’t come out the yard too tough anyways, my boyfriend is awesome to live with and again IT WAS HOT N SUNNY! The mini lockdown in November had me with a lil bit of an uh-oh moment (managed to claw back some business for it and a ‘walleepa-money’ to then evaporate due to the ineptitude of the British Government), and now an ACTUAL lockdown like back in March is happening. Its this one that had me feeling off. Now I know that everyone (and I’m talking about every human) is been or is being effected by this pandemic and I am well aware of many having a lot more pressure placed upon them in terms of getting through it. As for me, if had to take heed on my own advice and dig in to my talent bag and check for the thing I once loved but felt I never had time for. Proper hobbies I didn’t keep up because I didn’t think they would lead anywhere. But I had to realise that that isn’t what hobbies were for. They are just for you to enjoy, personally. So I’m back behind (and in front of) a camera. And this time, a proper camera. I did a lil bit of event photography earlier in the year to get to know the camera better and lord knows I do love a selfie but I wanna know more about light, shadow, shutter speed etc, and really geek out with this. So to all the professional camera nerds reading this, your assistance and top tips would be greatly appreciated coz I'm not trying to be a jack of all trades and master of none! I have the time to master everything I love from old skills to new! #MVP: @exhibit69 😘 (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKKHfomB8pi/?igshid=bpq7t8bxjyt9

You welcomed me into your home, told me I should try a mix house music, handed me your CD book and said "try it out" and you recorded it for me! It was the only time I've ever been nervous to play in front of another person and you told me I did a awesome job. Even posted the mix to your networks! Your the reason I love house music. You broke it down to where I could understand why its a beautiful genre and does nothing but bring positivity to its listener. As a DJ, made my repertoire expand and I am eternally greatful. I'm just thankful I got to tell you that before today! We lost an actual legend! Rest forever blessed Phlash! #PhilAsher #RestlessSoul #RIPPhlash https://www.instagram.com/p/CKWdQ_dhdqc/?igshid=pfaffxmny5ye

#repost: @exhibit69 . It's hard to be humble when you notice your DNA in the work of others. (especially jackets😂) I have been a consultant to some who have had me blackballed by some influential people because of their insecurity. I turned down Selfridges as the deal was dead. I've acted as a consultant to many of your favourite stylists, photographers and designers. I've been on many mood boards. I've never tried to appease the industry. I've been in rooms with people you dick ride but can't take pics as that lowers my leverage. Those who you rate, rate me. I get advice from my idols. I got a solid team🐺, Dope studio, ideas and extended creative family. You know who you are. I receive the messages and feel the energy of those who show genuine love. It fuels me and I'm appreciative. I just want the good and talented to win. The biters and naysayers can fuck off. You guys have literally seen 15% of my work. Patience is key. I create for release and money, not clout🤘🏿 📸@hawkmurphy #afropopart #artlife #juxtopozmag #maddoxgallery #tatemodern #popart #modernart #contemporaryart #handpainted #art #therarewillneverdie #museumfromhome #functionalart #artwear #popart #wearableart @cityoftalents #canvas #contemporaryart #privatecollection #artdealer #artadvisor #exhibition #therarewillneverdie @whitecube #museumfromhome @thewhitepube #museumfromhome #afropop #popart (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKB_ev-hHVN/?igshid=vpxwspas4jm4

Storytime! Buying albums was a ritualistic activity for me. The leafing through the alphabetized CD stacks in Our Price n Sam Goody for HOURS. Not having the money for albums would kill me but I would sit in the store and read the inserts for production info and loved to read the ‘Thank Yous’ (remember them?), Once I gravitated to a particular album, I’d memorize the tracklist and search for the singles because they were cheaper. Plus the singles would have instrumentals, accapellas and remixes galore! Damn those were some dope ass times man! To my knowledge there were no independent record stores in Milton Keynes back in the day and if there were, it was for electronic genres like Drum N Bass, House etc. I didn't have known family in London to hook me up and having a strict Black single mother meant going to London alone was a massive no no! BUT my Mum was getting imports on a regs. She was playing them around house daily and I would be constantly reading sleeves and writing down artist names to look out for! *Interesting SheJay Fact: My mother introduced me to Busta Rhymes (my favourite MC) by way of The Coming, his debut solo album. I first heard Woo Haa whilst cleaning the kitchen!* I know you’re thinking ‘why is she not speaking about vinyl and she started djing with vinyl?’ Bruv, I was poor! Vinyl was never in my price range in my teens but I could burn CDs at a minimal cost. (I say cost but in reality I was shoplifting blank disc towers by the boat load from Dixons. I had to get them choons by all means man!) When I got my first job, I never grasped the concept of ‘saving money’. Cash would fall through my fingers so damn quickly that by the time I even thought of buying music, I was already finishing a large 3 piece and chips! So I struggled to put money to one side. But with the help of my dad sitting me down and teaching me about the wonderful world of budgeting, I did manage it one time. The first album I ever bought with my own money was My Life by Mary J Blige (£16.99 to be exact!). I still have the disc and will never get rid of it! What was your first album purchase? 📸: @hawkmurphy Styled by @exhibit69 (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ3q4R9Bctj/?igshid=hcoimqtdab4f

Storytime! One of my most treasured residencies was at a venue called Nexus in Milton Keynes. It was in the iconic complex called The Point and I have some dope ass memories of that place. I’m not going to name any names but there was a big big BIG DJ booked to play the headline set and myself was the resident DJ bookending their 3 hour set for the evening. Tickets were sold out and ALL my peoples were going to be there. I had been told what music to avoid so not have repeat plays during the headliners set and knew I had to really concentrate on not playing all the bangers from early (a hell worthy trespass to this day if you’re on warm up duty. DO NOT RINSE THE BIG CHOONS!!!) I kept it pretty oldskool nighties n noughties R&B n Hip Hop (think Smoove Grooves) and the crowd were receptive. Now its Big Man’s time. And it wasn’t going well. Nuff pots n pans, educational riddims (when the DJ is trying to teach you bout choon like its radio but you just wanna rave), no mic presense, just a big no! I’m talking the crowd were at one point just staring at man. It was peak. 3o minutes pass on the manager in his strong Croatian accent says to me “can you go on early?” to which I reply, cool, thinking it wouldn’t be yet when he then says, “no no, NOW, dis guy is shit, you know what to do to bring them back! He’s has been paid so he cannot get upset! Go tool up! GO NOW!” Now I can’t say I wasn’t nervous to tell Big Man DJ, “next ones ya last one yeah” but he could see it coming, kept it polite and was really cool with it. I went on, invoked the spirit of many a big sound and turned the place inside out! I have no idea what the moral of the story is but if you are dope at the beginning of your musical journey, never forget what you do to the crowd to get them hype! Coz when you get to big for ya boots, the rookie will be in the wings waiting for your spot with the hunger you no longer possess! #StayHungry 📸 @hawkmurphy Styled by @exhibit69 (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJLry50hi1B/?igshid=g2jtgk2ud5ha
