Chapter 6: Making Rent
They were cooling to the touch, the screwy temperature regulation of his body meaning it couldn't do much on it's own. But Charlie was a water bottle to his shot nerves, and on a day like that one, with Hancock was hurting, exhausted, the idea of wrapping up in someone so soft began to sound sweeter than honey suckle.

Chapter 23: Of Meaning Transcending Speech
So he carried them as when his 'anan had when he was small, when he was ill, when he was a fool and drove a sword, point down, into his own foot. And if the old wounds still ached, a hundred years after? At least you were still alive to feel them.

Chapter 5: Checked Out
“You’re a lot like the mayor. He lies by omission or with word play. I’ll be able to tell if you leave something out, and what I will say is if you care about him as much as you claim to, you will not do that.” "I'll be as honest as I can be without risking his life."

Chapter 4: Blood in My Eyes
“Well, hardware breaks down, eventually. The bots used to make and maintain that hardware needs it’s own repairmen, and so on. Eventually the circle will be complete, and they can support one another without human intervention, but there are still big wigs at the top over seeing it all in their neat suits, sitting around tables, talking about profit, and investment, and return profit, yada, yada. Me? I was one of the few human components that proofread their emails and acted as a communication liaison between different offices to make sure they didn’t tear each other’s throats out.” They took a long pull of their drink. “You were a courier?” They giggled, a delight in their voice that took him so off guard he had to wonder what joke he was missing.

Chapter 3: Sounds Like a Personal Problem
"I have been blown up, shot, eaten, caught on fire, and who knows what else I can’t seem to recall because I intend on keeping all of that locked up tight in my beautiful mind palace, thank you very much, and I look and feel fine.” “But you are not fine, Mads.”

Chapter 21: Of Matters Regarding Death
“That is what we saw. That ink,” he said, and it had them nodding in response. “Black iron holds a strong role in our society, Finley. It was used in the same arrows to pierce Smaug’s scales, as it is used in the same ink to draw up our contracts. Words hold power, and significantly more so those forged in fire. Gandalf was wise to attempt to hide this mark. But as it is clear that it has not gone unnoticed, I am almost certain that it will add to the dangers of this quest.”
“I swore to protect Fili and Kili,” they said, some ounce of desperation in their stomach that did not, by a miracle done by Eru himself, did not escape into their voice. “If…if that means being taken away again, then let me be. If that means…putting me down in case some strange prophecy comes to light and Sauron consumes me, then so be it.”

Chapter 2: As History Goes
Hancock’s figure silhouetted by the shadow of the room, Mads couldn’t forget that. Might never forget it, actually. The way his eyes shone against the dark, and with the afternoon light reaching for the narrow frame of his shoulders like a lover’s fingers slipping across that red, red fabric. Call it obsession, or infatuation, or any other rose just as sweet, but Mads felt a sudden fierce need to protect this world’s version of the man.

It was just meant to be a game. A "new and formative experience". Waking up in the pod without being able to leave, that was one thing. The inability to die despite being shot, tortured, and devoured? Now, that definitely did something to a person. With nothing more than a head full of meaningless facts, and the flesh on their back to work with, where else is there a freak of nature like Charlie Mads to go then Goodneighbor?

“Robin,” the sheriff tipped his chin, just missing the hat to complete the gesture, and the puzzle pieces fell into place. “Hey, sheriff asshole,” Robin replied dryly to their obviously old friend.
