It was just after 8pm when Remus had gathered his courage and morale and asked Sirius, in the most practised nonchalance he could muster, if he’d like to help him with a crossword in his tattered booklet of puzzles.

A tentative olive branch. One he repeatedly extended despite the constant negative reinforcement not to.

But the gods of Saimhan were clearly blessing Remus with a rare gift that night because Sirius capitulated with a lazy shrug and a nod before wandering over and sitting at the far end of the couch, a steaming mug of black coffee in his hand.

Remus let out a little sigh of relief when Sirius adjusted himself on the sofa to face him, his legs crisscrossing, looking more distracted than annoyed. Remus was thrilled and tried very hard to hide it, lest his exuberance irritate Sirius.

“Which one’s this, then?” Sirius asked with that little aristocratic cadence he often slipped into. The one that told Remus he was trying hard to cover up some deeper feeling.

“Dragon lore.” Remus offered, chancing a glance at him from beneath his too long fringe.

Sirius was trying to suppress a pleased grin under the facade of disgruntled disinterest. Remus found it utterly obnoxious and ached with the resignation that he was doomed in his love for this man.
