We re-enacted that moment at the place where Ring and I first embraced each other.

(Ring’s heart is beating so hard… like he loves me, like I’m his girlfriend.)

When I wondered why his heart was beating so fast, his kindness made my chest tighten sweetly.

His arms were around me, but stopped just shy of touching my back.

Kate: “Are you worried about someone seeing since we’re at the station?”

Ring: “No. Your scent is just floating around and distracting me.”

Ring, once again, said something unbecoming of a lover.

Kate: “How did you hold me before if you were always distracted?”

Ring: “Well that’s… well… like this!”

Suddenly, Ring hugged me so tightly that my back stiffened—

At that moment, my vision became so blurry and white that Ring’s face in front of me disappeared.

I pushed the confused Ring hard and we headed towards the main street where the streetlights were beginning to come on.

Kate: “Well then, why don’t we just go in and celebrate getting my memory back?”

But his plan was to shock me and bring back my memories…

Whether it was thanks to that or not—I was able to safely recover my memories.

Ring: “Even so, I was worried that you had completely believed my lie.”

Ring seemed to like the meatloaf I’d ordered, as he gobbled it down with gusto.

Ring: “I couldn’t keep acting like a lover, so I ended up confessing…”

Ring: “And the whole time you were one step ahead of me.”

With a look of exasperation on his face, Ring picked up a book titled “100 Jokes Guaranteed To Have Everyone Rolling With Laughter!”

A mental image of Nica cracking one of those witty jokes flashed through my mind and vanished as quickly as a shooting star.

Kate: L-let’s give it another thought! We still have plenty of time!

Ring: But…

Kate: I’ll help you search for a present you’re satisfied with! Don’t give up!

Ring: … Thanks, Robin. You’re very kind.

Just as we started walking toward another store, something caught my eye.

Kate: What do you think of this, Ring?

While searching for a present with Ring, my eyes landed on an advertisement for a “coffee cup painting experience”.

Since the members of Vogel lived in the palace, they most likely didn’t have much personal tableware… which made a personalised coffee cup a practical gift.

Moreover, I was sure Nica would be pleased to receive a one-of-a-kind coffee cup hand painted by Ring himself.

Ring: … They said they can process it quickly at the shop, so it’ll be ready for pick up tomorrow at noon.

Kate: I can’t wait to give it to Nica.

Ring: Yeah.

Ring and I left the store chatting after painting the coffee cup.

Just then, my vision turned orange.

Kate: Huh? Are these…

Ring: They’re osmanthus flowers.

Kate: But osmanthus flowers usually only bloom in autumn, right? Wouldn't that make this an off-season bloom?

Ring: … Or it might be a specially cultivated variety that blooms in all four seasons.

Kate: A specially cultivated variety…?

Ring: I'm not too sure of the details… but there’s a technique where different plants are crossbred to create new varieties with specific characteristics.

Ring: For example, some flowers are cultivated to have more vibrant colours, larger flowers… or a stronger resistance to disease.

Kate: Wow…! I never knew such techniques existed!

Listening to Ring’s explanation, I looked up at the osmanthus tree again.

Kate: I don't know if that was how this tree was created, but…

Kate: … If it was, then it means this tree was grown¹ carrying the hopes of the people who cultivated it.

¹ The word originally used here was “born”. But trees don't give birth… now do they?

I was so captivated by the sweet scent of osmanthus flowers and the sight of delicate orange petals fluttering down that I didn't notice—

Ring: “Born carrying hopes”... huh.

Ring: I, too,—

Ring muttered something while looking pained, but I didn't catch what he said.

Kate: … Ah, sorry, Ring! I got too distracted admiring the flowers.

Ring: No, it’s fine. Such seasonal anomalies are a rare sight and the flowers smell nice, so I understand why you stopped to appreciate them.

While Ring was talking, a strong gust of wind blew and sent a rain of osmanthus flowers coming down on us.

Ring: This is incredible. They just keep falling…

Kate: You’re right. It’s almost like a flower shower.

Ring: Flower shower…? That sounds interesting. Is it some sort of ritual where you bathe in flowers?

Kate: During a wedding ceremony, people scatter flower petals over the bride and groom as a way to give the newlyweds their blessings.

Ring: W-wedding…? B-b-bride and groom…!?

Ring: D-does that mean… standing in this rain of flower petals right now… we look like we’re getting married…!?

Kate: Huh? No, that’s not what I…

Ring: Unacceptable!

Ring panicked and hurriedly removed his jacket to hold over his head like a makeshift shelter from the “rain”, before pulling me closer to his side under it, holding me by the waist.

Ring: … Thank goodness. We’re safe now.

My nose was filled with the smell of the osmanthus flowers mixed with Ring’s deep woody scent.

My heart was hammering against my chest, and the warmth due to our lack of physical distance made me all the more nervous, but—

More than that, there was something else on my mind.

Kate: Umm… I’m sorry, Ring.

Ring: What for?

Kate: I didn’t realize you’d hate the idea so much… I shouldn't have compared this to a flower shower.

Ring: … No, it’s not you that I hate.

Ring: One day, we might become enemies, and as a member of Vogel, I can’t get too close to you…

Ring: That aside, you’re kind and an overall good person.

Ring: When Harrison and Roger had me surrounded in front of the castle today, it made me happy to hear you calling out to me from afar.

Ring: There’s nothing in it for you, and yet you sincerely helped me to pick a present for Nica.

Ring: You also stopped me when I was about to give up and buy something weird… all of it makes me happy.

Ring: If you were my fiancée, I feel like we’d make a wonderful family… I can easily picture it.

Kate: …

I could feel my face heating up at the praise I had never heard before.

Ring: That’s exactly why… it just feels wrong for someone like me to be seen as your fiancé.

Ring: So just bear with it a little longer, until the petals stop falling.

(“Someone like me”...)

Those words made the warmth I felt from being complimented fade away almost instantly.

I think Ring’s a wonderful person…

The way he spoke so lowly of himself was heartbreaking to witness.

Kate: You’re a wonderful person too, Ring. No matter what anyone says, I know you are.

I looked up at him, genuinely wanting him to hear the words coming from the bottom of my heart.

Kate: You’re wary of Crown because we might one day become Vogel’s enemy.

Kate: Despite that… you went all the way to Crown’s castle just to seek help with picking out a birthday present.

Kate: You wanted to find something special for Nica, even if it meant putting your suspicions aside. I think that’s wonderful.

Ring: …

Kate: Someone who cherishes the family he has now will surely… cherish the family they create in the future too.

Kate: So there’s nothing bad or strange about you being my fiancé at all…!

Ring: Um.

Kate: Ah.

Kate: Uhh… sorry. I was just babbling away…!

Ring: I-I see…

An awkward moment of silence fell between us as we stared at each other, unable to say another word.

Ring: Robin…

Right as Ring was about to say something, the wind suddenly stopped.

Ring: … G-good. The rain of petals is over.

Ring put his jacket back on and stepped away from me.

His warmth was now gone, and somehow I felt a little lonely.

…

Our day of picking out a present smoothly came to an end…

The next morning, I went to visit Ring at the palace.

Ring: Did you need something from me…? Did you perhaps forget to tell me something yesterday—...

Kate: Nope, I didn't forget anything. I came to tell you something I can only say today.

Ring: …?

Kate: Happy birthday, Ring!

I held out a small package to him.

Ring: Huh…? Wha—...!?

Kate: Since it’s Nica’s birthday today and you two are twins, I figured it must be your birthday too… am I wrong?

Ring: You’re not… but I didn't expect to receive a present from you.

Ring: Th…tha…thanks… Can I open it now?

Kate: Go ahead! … But it’s nothing fancy, so please don’t expect too much.

Ring opened the package to reveal a small glass jar filled with colourful candies.

Ring: Wow…! The jar is beautiful, and the candies sparkle like jewels…

Ring: It’s fun to look at, like looking at treasure.

He lifted the jar up to the sunlight, admiring the way the candies sparkled.

Kate: Fufu… I’m glad you like it. I picked it out while thinking of you.

Ring: Thinking of me…?

Kate: You told me yesterday that you had no sense for gifts and didn’t know enough about them to pick a good one, right?

Ring: Oh, yeah… I did say that.

Kate: I think that’s how everyone starts out.

Kate: Just like filling a glass jar with your favourite candies, you gain new experiences and gather things you love little by little every day…

Kate: That’s how you develop your sense for things and learn more about the world.

Kate: So… I hope the days you spend in England will be like this jar, filling up with things you love.

As I spoke, Ring took another look at the jar, taking in the sight of the colourful candies inside.

Ring: I don’t know if that’s how my days will turn out. But…

Ring: At the very least… they did turn out like that yesterday and today, all thanks to you.

Ring took out two pieces of candy, one the same warm orange colour of osmanthus flowers and one a soft lavender colour like the ribbon I was wearing today.

He placed the orange candy in my palm.

Ring: … Thank you for celebrating my birthday.

Ring: If you don’t mind… can we eat these candies together?

Kate: Thank you! I’d love to.

The sweet candy melted on my tongue, and at the same time, Ring’s gentle smile filled my heart…

It felt like a tiny piece of jewel-like candy was just added to the jar in my heart.

Darius: I have a favour to ask of you, Ring.

— The moment Darius opened his mouth to speak, sounding so casual as though it were ordinary small talk, Ring rushed to his side like a well-trained hunting dog.

Ring: … Want me to kill someone?

Darius: Fufu, it’s great you have so much bloodlust, but… not this time.

Darius: We haven’t been in England for long, so we don’t have many friends here who would willingly support us, right?

Darius: While we do have people who will use their slyness for our benefit…

Darius: We still lack someone who can be of real help when things turn violent.

Ring: … That’s true.

Ring: The people you call our allies seem much smarter than me.

Ring: But I don’t think many of them can actually pick up a sword and fight…

Darius: Yup. Well done on being observant, Ring.

Darius: That's why… I’m thinking of adding a strong member to our “family”.

Nica: I looked into Crown, and…

Nica: The one with the strongest physical abilities amongst them is Ellis Twilight.

Darius: And so I’d like Ring to look into his character.

Ring: His character…?

Darius: Yeah. I want you to observe him from up close… and decide if he’s worthy of being part of our “family”.

With a firm nod, Ring immediately left the room to carry out Darius’ order.

Darius: … Is it possible Ring intends to approach Ellis now?

Darius: I hope he doesn't anger anyone for visiting at this late hour…

Nica: He’ll be fine. Who knows, he might even get Ellis to be fond of him.

Nica: Besides, sending Ring to interact with Ellis—

Nica: A way to use his pure, sincere nature to ease Ellis’ wariness toward us, isn’t it?

Nica: It’s all part of your plan.

Darius: Fufu… you know me so well, Nica.

Darius: If it were you or me approaching Ellis, not just Ellis Twilight, but even Jude Jazza would be on high alert.

Nica: Whereas Ring won’t really be seen as a threat.

Two figures walked through the silent streets at night, the sound of their footsteps on the cobblestone echoing rhythmically.

But in the next moment— one of them stops in his tracks.

Jude: … Ellis.

The other person stopped at the sound of his name.

Ellis: Yeah… someone’s following us.

Ellis: Jude, you go ahead to the meeting first. I’ll take care of them and join you later.

After parting ways with Jude, Ellis slipped into a dark alleyway and hid himself in the shadows.

He quietly gripped his familiar black knife while listening to the approaching footsteps.

And the instant the presence of his pursuer entered his range, the knife in his hand formed an arc in the air, cutting into the darkness.

Ellis: Ha…!

With his extraordinary physical ability— Ellis’ attack was both swift and heavy.

An average person would never have been able to react in time, however… the pursuer managed to block Ellis’ knife with a sword.

Sharp metal blades clashed, sparks flew, and the loud clang ripped through the silence of the night.

Ellis: Huh? You’re… Ring from Vogel?

Ring: Y-yeah, I am… but why did you suddenly attack me?

Ellis: Sorry. I thought you were an assassin going after Jude…

Ellis lowered his guard and put away his knife. Ring did the same, putting away his sword.

Ellis: What are you doing here, Ring? It looked like you were following Jude and I…

Ring: Umm… I wanted to get to know you, so I followed you.

Ellis: Really? … Will doing that make you happy?

Ring: Y-yeah! I think it definitely would!

Ellis: If it’ll make you happy… then I’ll tell you more about myself.

Ring: Wait, just like that…? Are you sure about that?

Ellis: Yeah. … But I have work to do right now, so we’ll have to leave that to another day.

Ellis: Are you free tomorrow at around noon?

Jude: Ellis, ya sure took yer own sweet time gettin’ back. That guy gave ya trouble?

Ellis: No, not exactly…

Ellis: … I’m going to have lunch with Ring.

"Surprise Bag 2025" Story Sale: The Villain Became A Plushie!?

Ring Schwartz

Ring was turned into a plushie.

(He’s incredibly adorable, but… he’s also so dirty, it's unbelievable.)

The adorable plushie version of him was covered from head to toe in grime.

Kate: What happened to you on the way here?

Ring: I crawled under a shelf in the hallway.

Kate: ? Why would you…?

Ring: Because I saw this.

Kate: … Oh!

Ring took an earring out of his pocket and gave it to me.

It was the one I thought I’d lost the other day.

Ring: You looked so sad talking about losing it.

Ring: I saw it under the shelf when I shrank.

Ring: It looked like what you described, so I thought…

Ring: If it could help me find something you’d lost, then maybe having this body isn’t so bad.

Kate: Ring… thank you so much.

The realisation that he got himself dirty just to retrieve my lost earring squeezed my heart, I was full of gratitude and wanted to do something for him in return.

Kate: Please let me clean you as a way to thank you!

Ring: Wha—

I grabbed both of his little hands and held them tightly.

Kate: You can’t wash yourself with these hands, can you?

Kate: Leave it to me. I’ll make sure you’re all fluffy and clean!

Ring: W-wait a second!

Kate: Don’t worry. I used to wash my plushies on my own when I was a child, so I have lots of experience!

Ring: No, that's not the— uwahh!

Lifting Ring up, I climbed into the bathtub with him in my arms and bunched up the hem of my skirt.

Ring: Ahh, your legs! I can see your thighs!

Kate: Ah, I'm so sorry! They must be unsightly…

Ring: They’re not unsightly, if anything they're beautiful… wait, no! I can do this myself.

I rolled up my sleeves and grabbed the shower head while Ring was flailing around in panic inside the bathtub.

Kate: I’m going to turn on the water. I’ll be careful not to get it on your face.

Ring: Uwah!

He yelped in surprise when gently showered with hot water.

Kate: I’ll start washing you now. Let’s start with your head…

Ring: You really don't have to do this for me.

Kate: But you can’t reach your head.

Ring: Ugh…

His little hands couldn’t reach past the top of his ears.

Seeing how strongly he protested, I turned off the shower and looked him in the eyes.

Kate: Do you really hate it…?

I had offered to wash him as an act of gratitude, but it made him more uncomfortable than expected.

I started thinking maybe I should stop, but it turned out that my worries were unnecessary—

Ring: … I don’t.

Kate: Huh?

Ring: I don’t hate… being washed by you.

Ring reached out his tiny hand and touched the hem of my skirt.

Ring: I’ll be counting on you.

He lifted his head and gave me a determined look.

…

Kate: The dirt really isn’t easy to get off, huh.

Ring: … ggh.

Focusing the shower on the dirtiest spots, I scrubbed gently yet thoroughly.

The dirty water swirled away down the drain as he gradually became cleaner.

But hot water alone wasn’t enough to clean off the tougher stains.

Unexpectedly, Ring began trembling and forced his words out through his clenched teeth.

Ring: … This isn’t over yet?

Kate: No, because hot water just isn't enough.

Kate: Oh, lift up your arms.

As I scrubbed under his arms while still thinking about how to tackle the stubborn stains, Ring suddenly stood up.

Ring: I’m at my limit.

Kate: Eh? Kyaa—

Ring: Whoa—

In an instant, something sprang out before my eyes.

Startled, I let go of the shower head and was drenched in hot water.

When I pulled myself together, I noticed that Ring had returned to his original form and was now hovering over me.

Ring: Sorry, it’s my fault for standing up so suddenly… are you hurt?

Kate: I-I’m fine.

Water dripped from his hair down to his cheek, and his soaked inner shirt clung tightly to his skin, revealing his muscular figure.

Ring’s toned body was now clearly visible through his wet shirt.

Muscular arms, bony hands, sharp features… everything about him exuded an aura of masculinity—.

Kate: … Kate.

He called my name in a feverish voice and reached toward me.

Kate: Achoo!

I let out a loud sneeze and he quickly scrambled off me.

Ring: Sorry, use this.

He grabbed a nearby towel and wrapped me in it, but he was startled by how cold I'd gotten as soon as his hand touched my arm.

Kate: Whoa—

Suddenly, he pulled me into his arms right there in the bathtub.

Ring: You’ll catch a cold.

(Could it be that Ring’s trying to warm me up?)

The thought of him hugging me to keep me warm was so adorable, I couldn't bring myself to say I’ll just go change out of my wet clothes.

(... This makes me happy, so I want to stay like this a little longer.)

As I enjoyed the unfamiliar warmth of his body, he gently brushed away the strands of wet hair clinging to my cheek.

Ring: I'm all clean again.

Ring: Thanks, Kate.

(I didn’t know what to do when I first saw he’d turned into a plushie… but now, I feel like we’ve grown a little closer and that makes me happy.)

We both laughed, and a few seconds later, Ring suddenly shot up with his face bright red.

He tried to get out of the bathtub, only to slip and fall.

… Let’s keep the last part a secret between us.

Ring: … You look beautiful. So beautiful, I can’t put it into words.

His pure, genuine feelings spilled out naturally and went straight into my heart.

Ring: Can I lift your veil? I want to take a better look at your face.

Kate: G-go ahead…

My voice was slightly shaky, and Ring gave me a reassuring smile.

(Maybe I’m even more nervous than Ring is…)

My veil was lifted, fluttering as it was pulled behind my head, and the scenery before my eyes became brighter.

Ring: … I’ve never seen such beauty and radiance in my life.

His eyes were sparkling like sunlight reflecting off a water’s surface, and for a moment, I forgot that this wedding was only pretend.

John: God has brought the two of you together and blessed you with this joyful moment.

John: In the presence of God, please vow that your love shall be eternal.

Ring: … I vow eternal love to Kate.

Kate: I, too, vow eternal love to Ring.

Gazing into each other’s eyes, we said our vows of love in front of the altar, and just then—

John: … Your vows are a lie.

Ring: What makes you say so?

John: Don’t act innocent. I know the two of you aren't real lovers.

John: I also know that you trespassed onto sacred grounds and read my diary without permission.

(He noticed everything!)

John: You will pay for your sins with your lives. — Now, it is time for the purge.

At the signal of the word “purge”, John drew his sword.

Staff members of Tiamo emerged around us from behind the pews and the angel statue, armed with weapons they had kept hidden from view.

Kate: Ring, at this rate, they’re going to kill us.

Ring: Not when I’m here. I won't let that happen

John: That defiance… don’t tell me, you didn't drink it?

Kate: If you’re referring to the drink we were served before the wedding, I only pretended to drink it and threw it away.

Ring: It was obviously laced with some sort of drug.

John: You meddlesome fools…! In that case, you shall suffer and die horrible deaths!

Ring: For now, just… close your eyes.

Kate: Huh? Close my eyes?

Ring: No time to explain.

Ring yanked off the cloth covering the altar and forcefully threw it over my head.

Kate: I- I can’t see.

Ring: Good. Now stay right there and don't move.

Through the lace now covering my head, I could barely make out Ring’s silhouette. But then, moment I sensed his presence leave my side,—

I heard footsteps moving rampantly in all directions, followed by what sounded like muffled groans and cries.

(What’s going on…? And this smell—)

Kate: … It’s blood.

The stench hit me so hard, I almost couldn’t breathe. My body tensed instinctively… there was no mistaking that smell that set off all the warning bells in my head.

(The smell of blood is getting thicker.)

If my vision weren’t obstructed by the cloth over my head… I was sure I’d witness the same kind of carnage I’d seen countless times before on missions with Crown.

(And the one causing that carnage is… Ring.)

The sound of feet kicking off the wall, the chandelier hanging above head shaking, someone or something falling to the ground.

No human voices, because Ring was slicing through their throats before they could even scream.

—... And then, complete silence.

Ring: … All finished off.

Kate: Finished off? What on earth is going on right now… whoa—

Ring: Be quiet. You’ll bite your tongue.

Not giving me a chance to argue, Ring lifted me into his arms and took off with the flexibility of a panther.

…

The cloth over my head was taken off with one sharp swipe.

Kate: … So bright…

Ring: … You okay?

As my eyes adjusted to the light, I was met directly with Ring’s gaze. He stood right before me, staring into my face from up close.

Kate: W-why did you cover my eyes!? I had the responsibility to see for myself what happened back there.

Kate: I’m the member of Crown who wanted to stop John’s activities in the first place…

Ring: You’ll find out what happened to John soon enough. There’s no reason for you to personally witness that scene.

Ring: And… I didn’t want you to see it either.

Kate: Why not…?

Ring: … Because you looked so blissful smiling in that wedding dress.

Ring: I don’t ever want that sparkling bright smile of yours to fade.

I couldn’t bring myself to say anything in objection when I heard the pleading tone in his words, and could only quietly turn my eyes toward the River Thames.

Ring: The mission is complete. But… it's still kind of a shame.

Ring: If it were possible, I wish we could’ve gone through with the wedding ceremony all the way to the end.

Kate: Huh…?

Ring: Killing people is all I’m good for. No woman will ever love someone like me, a man who’s always soaked in other people’s blood.

Ring: I’ll never get another chance to have a woman as beautiful as you standing next to me.

Ring: This was my last and only chance… and I let it slip away.

(Killing people is all he’s good for…? That’s not true…)

Sorrow welled up inside me and I frantically shook my head.

Kate: You covered my eyes out of kindness so that I wouldn’t have to witness that carnage… no matter what anyone says about you, you’re a wonderful man!

Kate: If you tried, I’m sure you could find another way to live…!

Ring: Haha, you’re probably the only person who’d say such a thing to me.

He laughed, and didn't seem to believe my words.

Ring: But… I'm fine with this way of life.

Ring: I'm not good at playing tricks like Nica is, but as Dari says, I can kill.

Ring: It hurts my heart to take the lives of other people, but everything goes well as long as I’m following Dari’s orders.

I finally realised how important Darius was to Ring.

And that was why the thought of Ring continuing to unhesitatingly follow his orders… hurt unbearably.

(He’s strong enough to destroy all of Tiamo on his own, and doesn't hesitate to kill.)

(But I know his heart is kind.)

He was almost like a newborn child who was so pure and unguarded, he couldn't tell right from wrong.

(He seems off balance somehow, like there’s a part of him that doesn't quite fit the rest of his person…)

(And that’s why, I can’t take my eyes off him.)

The reflection of his profile, full of strength and fragility at the same time— was further distorted by the light hitting the surface of the River Thames.
