We hope everyone in the house is getting ready for Call Down The Hawk! 

As we gear up to get sucked back in an universe of dreams, fire and magic, we’re also ready to provide you with the perfect outlet of your upcoming creativity rush…

The Big Bang will run from late November to June 2020!

Whether you’re attached to the original Raven Cycle trilogy, pumping up for a sequel or joining the party just for DreamerTrilogy, it doesn’t matter. This year, the event will be be a merged Raven Cycle/Call Down The Hawk bang, allowing you to mix&match from both sagas at your leisure.

Official signups will open on Nov 15th. But in the meantime, help us get an idea of the numbers. Are you a writer? An artist? A beta-reader?

honestly not about opening apps i just don't know where to start!! are there any things you wish you had known before you did your first one? beginner tipz

Gotcha!  Honestly I got most of my zine skillz from working on a college literary magazine for 4 years, so I came into this fairly prepped, but!  General tips!

1) Good organizational skills.  This is vital.  Zines get crazy because there are so many people involved.  You gotta have some way of keeping track of everything.  I mostly used color-coded spreadsheets and detailed file names/folders.

2) Good communication skills.  Be really open during the entire process, from what you’re looking for in apps to when deadlines are to what you’re doing with the money.  Definitely be open if there are any delays or mishaps!  Everything goes much smoother if you’re all on the same page.

3) Plan ahead.  Before you open apps for artists/writers, you should know what dimensions you’ll be printing at and approximately how many pages it’ll be.  This way you don’t end up with art that’s the wrong size or a zine that’s 120 pages long.

4) The Actual Zine.  You’ll definitely want to know about how printing works if you’re doing physical copies - CMYK vs RGB, dpi, bleeds, ect.  You gotta know this stuff before you actually sit down and design the zine, or you could run into some major problems when printing comes around.  You’ll also want to be familiar with a design program, like Adobe InDesign, to actually layout the zine.  (I use Scribus.  It’s free).

5) Mods!!  If this is your first zine and you’re not coming in with experience in the whole process like I did, I really recommend bringing some mods on board.  They’ll help with stuff you might not be familiar with, or simply with delegating tasks like emailing everyone.  They’ll make your life a whole lot easier.

Zines are complex beasts, and no two are alike.  Feel free to ask any more questions or come off anon to chat if you want more details on anything :)

Hi! I was wondering if you’re going to do a reprint of the zine? I’ve only just found this blog and would love to buy one!!!

Hi!  I probably won’t do any reprints unless there’s a big interest in that, but the zines are all available digitally here!

Beyond that, I have a few physical copies leftover that I’ll probably do a giveaway for in a bit.  Maybe during the spring?
