Hanggai, a Mongolian music band whose members are from Inner Mongolia and Beijing. Their music is a blend of Mongolian folk and modern rock. I first heard of overtone/throat singing from this band in art festival live performance and it was great! This live video of the song ‘Four Seasons’ has much better vibes than the CD version.Enjoy~

Discovered this video and band on YouTube by chance. First time to see the instruments like the bells and Kobyz, the ancient instrument in Central Asia. The jew’s harp music starting from 2m47s is great!

It is nice if we can know more about the culture, lifestyle, history, etc about the place before our visit and watching documentary is a good way to start. The video clip I found in YouTube is a documentary about the life of the nomadic people in Mongolia. It’s an interesting video with a in-depth report on the lifestyle and the difficulties these people face. The shots of the herds on the grasslands and the scenery of the place are impressive too.

Altain Magtaal

Ode to the Altai Mountains /Altain Magtaal is a Mongolian song performed with special throat singing styles adopted by the Mongolians, Tuvinians and the Altai people. There are many different versions of the song and I love this one best. I really like the beginning with the mouth harp and was fascinated by the throat/overtone/Khoomei singing in the song.

I started feeling interested in Altai Mountains after watching a Taiwanese indie singer Cheer Chan’s MTV with the extract of the Mongolian folk song, Ode to the Altai Mountains (Altain Magtaal), at the end. It was my first time to hear the Mongolian song but I was deeply attracted by the melody and the throat singing part of the song.
