Naz Basaran looks at Ulaan, the new album from Munich based jazz/traditional Mongolian artist Enji Erkhem, released July 28th on Squama.
Enji Erkhem’s Ulaan offers a pit stop in life. It makes you present in your whole body and cuts the rushing anxieties of your mind for 36 minutes. The strong and gentle vocals of Erkhem combine with the brilliance of Mongolian touches on Jazz music to form a diamond sparkling inside the rock that is 2023’s releases.

Mongolia, 2002, Mongolian throat singing / Mongolian music
Mongolian jaw harp, Mongolian bowed double bass, horsehead fiddle, and overtone drone singing send you on your way, equipping you with all the beauty and mystery of the world you can handle to sustain you on your journey. You stand on the threshold, looking out into the darkness and the mist, and the touches of classical Chinese music…
aemond actually doesn’t listen to music he thinks it dulls his perfectly honed hearing. he does put on a 35 hour mongolian throat singing spotify playlist when he writes his IB higher level valyrian history essay so he can channel the energy of his ancestors
So random but I swear to god the first time I heard throat singing was in a call of duty game I played almost a decade ago?? But it was part of the background noise/music that was used in the multiplayer games. LISTEN TO THIS AND TELL ME IT'S NOT THROAT SINGING
IS THAT NOT A PERFECT SYGYT NOTE OR WHAT?? I literally remember when I first started listening to throat singing years ago thinking "where the hell did I hear this from before??" when I heard sygyt for the first time and. It's. This. Videogame.

OH THEY ALSO USED THROAT SINGING IN THE THIRD INSTALLMENT OF THIS SERIES BUT IT WAS FOR THE GAME OVER THEME FOR THE ZOMBIES MODE WHEN YOU DIED:
I know it's not Mermay but I just stumbled across this incredible polyphonic singer for the first time and I had to mention her in case anyone happened to be writing a mermaid fic right now and was looking for inspiration for what an actual siren (or demon??) would sound like... 😲
The HU is a Mongolian folk metal band formed in 2016. Incorporating traditional Mongolian instrumentation, including the morin khuur, the tovshuur, and throat singing, the band calls their style of music "hunnu rock", a term inspired by the Xiongnu, an ancient tribal confederation of uncertain origins, known as Hünnü in Mongolia. Some of the band's lyrics include old Mongolian war cries and poetry.
