TRDL 2018 Series No. 7 - Black Canary [3 Birds]

This is the second Black Canary piece to be completed and available as a print, another one that was started earlier but completed this year. I was inspired by a more action-oriented redesign of Dinah Lance's classic fishnets and bodice look, doing away with the floppy boots and 80s jacket. My soft redesign just tweaked how the yellow is incorporated. Again, those fishnets are tough.

TRDL 2018 Series No. 8 - Batman '66

This piece is one odd duck, but it turned into one of my recent favorites. It began as a demonstration at a convention, showing another artist how well Procreate works on the iPad Pro using an Apple Pencil. I was goofing around, as it was just a process study for them. But I kept going back to it throughout the weekend, because I really like the Batman '66 costume, just never had the opportunity to draw it. If you've seen anything Jonathan Case has illustrated for the DC retro comic you'll know that the design is actually fun to see in comic form, especially when taken seriously. I do need to do that too. Anyway, the proportions and bobble-head situation on this one made it want to be more of a pop art vibe, and so there we are!

TRDL 2018 Series No. 6 - Black Canary

This is the first Black Canary piece to be completed and available as a print, but it wasn't the first to be drawn. In fact, two others were underway in years prior. However, I had a hankering for drawing the classic Black Canary of my youth, circa early 80s. Admittedly, I made a few adjustments: less wavy hair, modern one-million eyelet boots... but more or less the original design I remember from back in the day. This will certainly not be the last time I say this, but boy, fishnets are hard to draw across compound shapes like a bent knee. Anyway, really like how this one came out! I included the arrow as a nod to her primarily relationship in the books when I was reading them back then.

TRDL 2018 Series No. 5 - Catwoman [Darwyn Cooke Version]

This piece was in the hopper for a long time. I've loved this design, probably the first look for the characters I've enjoyed since the Batman 66 version, ever since Darwyn Cooke revealed it many years back in her solo book. It was more than just a design upgrade over the chintzy 80s and 90s spandex sex kittens it followed, but signified a shift in Selina Kyle's character and motivations, and redefined the manifestation of her place in the MCU thereafter. I hope I did it justice!

TRDL 2018 Series No. 4 - Harley Quinn Pink

This piece is based on original fan art by artist Daniel Hooker, which I found when I was still moderating the TRDL R3 Art Jam some time back. I was really struck by a few design details in his redesign, so I decided to take a pass at the look, with a few updates of my own. Very fun! This character never gets old, even when I can only really deal with the film version, overall. Dig it!

TRDL 2006 Series No. 19 - Kasumi [Dead or Alive]

This is a piece from 2006 featuring Kasumi from the Dead or Alive series. In the original version she was kicking someone's head off, so this is a slightly elevated view. I always loved that she was barefoot in flowy robes, in contrast to the design of some of the other characters from the early franchise.

This piece was done as a special commission for a client I met in Portland at the Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con. I had wanted to do a Jane Foster Thor for a few years but hadn't had a chance yet, so this was good timing. This one is a nice companion piece to my Valkyrie as Thor Redesign [Tessa Thompson] and my two Lady Sif pieces. Strong women!

Classic Sandman battling it out with post-Secret Wars era black costume Spider-Man (before the symbiote became a whole thing) with poor MJ in distress... now, you know she's probably waiting for the right moment to verbally dress down Sandman to the point that he just gives up and wanders off... anyway, I had a few requests, so here it is in print form!

TRDL 2017 Series No. 80 - Ms. Marvel

This is the first piece of Carol Danvers in her classic 80's black costume that I've done in several years, despite being my second favorite look for her (after her debut costume) and despite having drawn her in it many times in the years prior. I love the asymmetry and all that inky black! The first time I published a pic of this look, I had given her a shiny latex sheen to the black components of the design, and I've subsequently seen that approach several times at the cons in cosplay form. It looks great, but now I'm feeling the jet black vibe. That was 2005, by the way.  You can also find a variant for this piece in our 2017 Holiday prints bundle!

This is one of our two holiday special pics for 2017 featuring Carol Danvers. Joao Marques drew her in her contemporary look, and I did a version in her black 80's costume, which you can find on the site. Both are available as holiday prints or as normal non-seasonal pieces.

This piece was recently completed, but done originally in late 2007 or so, about 4 years before the release of the first Thor film. I was delighted to see him fight the Destroyer enchanted armor. The timing was coincidental, but well aligned, I thought!
