Also, to be clear, I don't think fanfiction is to blame for the overwhelming amount of meh cosy fiction or romance out there. Fanfiction and the folks who write it aren't doing anything wrong. I think it's due to the publishing industry's desire to sell you something you would otherwise be reading for free.
That's my ultimate hot take.

Shout out to all of the self inserter Rooks, Hawkes, Inquisitors and HoFs! Yes, I remember when you did that thing at the Landsmeet! I really like how you handled the power struggle in Orlais during Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts! I fondly think back to that one scene with you and your love interest! Moving stuff, my liege!
What's that? Your character said something you wouldn't have? I don't remember that. That didn't happen. I remember how YOU handled it, sire. I also remember how you got that ending for your character you wanted. Fabulous stuff, my liege!
It's all make believe and I believe I like playing pretend in the way that is most fun! Play Barbies with me in mamas garden 🫴

If you’re bad enough at DA2, you can imagine that Varric keeps saying “…And then they died” every five minutes, which pisses Cassandra off to no end because it’s a lie, she knows it’s a lie, but he keeps doing it and she gets so into the story that she falls for it every time and just screams in pure rage.

The Hunchback remake rumors that surface like once a year have me on my TOES
"What do you want from a remake" I DON'T WANT THEM. I DON'T WANT ANOTHER SOULLESS NOSTALGIA-FILLED CASH-GRAB. I DON'T WANT ANY OF THEM. I DON'T WANT ADAPTATIONS THAT KILL THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE OF THE THING THEY WERE BASED UPON NEITHER THE SHOT-BY-SHOT DESATURATED RECREATIONS. I WANT ORIGINAL STORIES!!! NOT REMAKES OF MOVIES THAT AIN'T EVEN 30 YEARS OLD!!!AAGGGGGHHH

I know I’m not the first person to say this but fandom’s seeming need to shove any character dynamic into some kind of familial role (siblings, father-son, mother-daughter etc) increasingly feels just as stifling and dismissive of platonic love as making every relationship romantic does.
I dunno man do you view all of your close friends as siblings cause I sure don’t. and I definitely don’t think of them as parents

there's a post on here that's like "the worst thing a piece of fiction can be is mean", and while I agree with that, I think it being insincere is just as bad. nothing more obnoxious than a story that's constantly sneering and rolling its eyes at its own genre in a bid to seem clever and above it all.

not even "boycott the lilo and stitch remake for moral reasons" but just "have some standards for movies." like yes having moral convictions for boycotts is important because, what, if it was good would I think people should see it? no, of course not. but that's the thing, innit? it's not going to be good. youre getting slop. let's worry about clearing the very low bar of "not slop" first. you deserve better. don't waste your ticket money on sequel/remake/rebootquel/Expansion Of Our IP slop and you won't even have to expend the emotional effort of sticking to your principles.

I gotta read more fics
my best tip for anyone who doesn’t know what to say when commenting on fic: pick something from the beginning. something that hooked you or stood out to you enough to make you keep reading.
most commenters will say something about the end or maybe the middle, because that’s the thing on their mind when they reach the comment box, so writers don’t always get to see what readers thought about their beginning!

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Philippians 4 : 8 KJV one of my favorite passages 🧡🧡
Doesn't it make far more sense to spend energy on what you enjoy?? That's my policy anyway.
P.s. I'm of the opinion if everyone stopped going to see the soulless remakes of beloved films, there'd be far less soulless remakes of beloved films getting made.
I think "no hatewatching" is a good policy to have, but less because you have to deprive Big Media Corp of your $15 or whatever for a movie ticket, which makes very little difference to them, and more because you should not, for your own spiritual health, waste your time on movies that you know are bad and/or you will not enjoy.
Surround yourself with what is true and good and beautiful. Avert your eyes from what is cheap and soulless and ugly.

Not to mention fostering the inherent human need to express the things we all go through in a way that's not only healthy and unharmful to anyone but can also bridge barriers like nothing else can, be it through friendship or one's relationship with themself or faith or what have you.
Something lost in this day and age is the act of creation. We care more about instant gratification (ties into the fear of making something and having it be "bad") and the end result than we do about the simple joy there is to be found in shitty poetry we wrote ourselves that was cathartic to spell out or a painting that's three jagged slashing lines that helped snap something into perspective. The rise of ai and the obsession with "content" and results that are above reproach is killing our humanity in insidious ways.
Potentially hot take but one of the reasons we need art and music in schools is that, taught correctly, they are ideal avenues for teaching kids how to do something, kinda suck at it, keep going anyways and improve over time.
And THAT is one of the most valuable skill sets a human being can have. THAT is the skill set that unlocks soooooo many others.
A LOT of people I see with anxiety and depression do not have this skill set. To suck at something is a threat. Proof that they are doomed to suck at it forever. And then, often, that either THEY suck forever or the task must be stupid/useless/pointless (whence we get AI art fans who have decided actually making art is pointless and degrading the labor and skills of others is fine because these are useless skills).
Or you get the freeze- the inability to try things in case you fail. The sudden lancing shame and humiliation or hopelessness. The sense that anything you haven't learned by now you can't learn. Which is so heartbreaking and so untrue.
I just hate it.
"What if I write it and it's bad" "what if I draw it and it's bad" "what if I play it and it sounds bad" DOING IT BAD IS HOW YOU LEARN TO DO IT GOOD! You can't skip the process of leaning and the process is FUN if you let it be what it needs to be!

I feel like chatgpt came around and everyone immediately forgot what they were doing to get stuff done before. like writing centers, extensions, extra help, templates, office hours, beta readers, random generators, and art and writing prompts have all existed for ages. even if you were cheating there's always been sparknotes, photomath, copying, paying someone else to do it, faking that your grandma died, and whatever. all of that stuff is more reliable and doesn't fuck over the planet. and you might actually learn something
