The Thanksgiving after Ultron, Laura Barton insists on inviting the Avengers to Thanksgiving dinner. All of them. At her house.
Natasha isn’t phased. She’s been to Thanksgiving dinner every year since Clint adopted her. She gets there a day early to help with meal prep and to make her favorite baklava for dessert. It’s nontraditional, but then, so is she.
Steve shows up early with a pie made the way his mother taught him when he was young. The familiar scents and sights (turkey, stuffing) and the new ones (green bean casserole??) make him choke up a little, but he gets busy helping the kids set the table. It’s the closest to home he’s felt in decades.
Pepper and Tony haven’t been to a Thanksgiving dinner in, like, ever. They usually just go to a restaurant or something. “See, Tony, this is what my family did when I was little,” Pepper whispers, and Tony wonders what it would’ve been like to grow up that way himself.
Bruce hasn’t done Thanksgiving since his transformation. He hasn’t felt very thankful for anything at all. But within three seconds, Clint’s kids are all over him and Laura hands him the baby to hold, and he finds something hard and angry in his chest is relaxing for the first time in years.
Thor has never done Thanksgiving at all. But the concept of a feast is one he’s familiar with. They told him not to bring mead (not appropriate with the kids running around and Tony in recovery), so he comes with a totally unidentifiable dish that smells delicious and has a long unpronounceable name. (Pepper takes one look at the ancestral glassware and china and then hauls him away to discreetly explain that breaking dishes will not be acceptable here.)
This is Wanda’s first big celebration since she lost her home and brother in one fell swoop. The food is all new and strange, and sometimes she can’t quite catch what people are saying if they speak too fast in English. But as she ventures into the kitchen an apron-clad Natasha turns to meet her with a plateful of pierogi made just for her. And then Laura ends up hugging Wanda and wiping her tears away with a dish towel because her overwhelming gratitude at the sight of that one familiar food made her break down a little.
They’re broken. They’re imperfect. But as they gather around the big table, and Laura says grace, and Clint starts everyone off saying one thing they’re thankful for…
They know they’re home.

LMAO what we were all thinking, but I feel like if he had said that, it would’ve been his last words before she very literally ripped him a new one. 😅
