Indiana Dirt part 3

Indiana Part 2. These were all taken in Posey county indiana, home to two cities I only saw glimpses of, New Harmony and Mount Vernon. In the country surrounding these two very small towns, there are a variety of farms. Most of these seem to owned by the descendants of german immigrants.
Sometimes the expansive rolling hills seem to go on forever only to be broken by a few dispersed houses.

The fist picture in my mini series “Indiana Dirt”. A look at the land where my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my uncle, and my aunt grew up and where I use to visit as a kid. I’ve a special connection to Indiana that I never fully appreciated until my last visit. As a child, I never understood the profound beauty wrapped within the state, and now I find myself wanting to return even more and photograph the old and new things that have established themselves there. Hopefully, this mini-series can portray that sense of beauty and serenity I feel in this state, and hopefully as you look at the pictures you’ll hear the birds and wind whistle in your ears.
This is my great grandmother. She turned 90 last year and is still kicking.

Atlanta 2017. I’m just going to leave these images here and let them speak for themselves. These are just some of my favorites from last year taken on black and white film. Hope you all enjoy.

Kids 2017. These are images I’ve looked over the past year, shared, but I thought they’d go well together. These are some of my favorites of kids, and although they aren’t the best pictures, I think that they go somewhat well together.
One thing I’ve always struggled with is getting close to people and interacting normally without being awkward, but there’s been a dude I’ve been hanging out with recently that’s been incredibly inspiring to my work and how I approach. He’s going to be included in my portrait series of friends because he’s just an all around awesome dude. If I hadn’t met him, I probably would be more behind in my photography and what I want to achieve. So shout out to Ryu Tomas! Even though I’m not sure you can see this, thanks.

Now another break from portraits of friends. This picture is somewhat of a throwback. I posted it on my instagram page a while back, but figured it would look better on tumblr. This picture was taken at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market in San Francisco, a place with the most vibrant colors of any place I’ve been too so far. I found a person selling a massive quantity and variety of fungi, and I went to take a picture of the greenery and fungi on display. This kid enters my frame and looks at me and I snap the picture.
The second picture I took in Indiana at the roofless church in New Harmony. I was working a scene with some kids playing a fountain and running around and thought that pictures of them would perfectly capture the innocence of playing in the summer sun. The picture also has some nostalgic value for me because I remember when I would play so carelessly. As I’m taking pictures, my grandfather is reading a plaque with information on it, as he often does. The kid runs past him and I thought the juxtaposition of old and new would make an interesting photo. We’ll see what you all think.
Technical Details: First picture, Minolta X-700 w/ 28mm f2.8 Rokkor-X and Kodak Portra 160; Second pic, Nikon F3 w/ 50mm f1.8 ais and Fujifilm Provia 100f

Next I would like to introduce Ahmed (Ahmed the Great). I’ve know him since freshman year as well, but we didn’t talk after our semester of calculus together. A year and half later, he contacts me about doing some flower beard portraits for him. See, he had grown out his beard to incredible and noteworthy lengths, so a natural end to such growth would have been to put flowers in his beard and take pictures. He’s a really nice guy as well and probably one of the most attentive listeners you can ever find, and it’s a skill that will serve him later in his career. Ahmed and I have also gone to many an antique store. The first two pictures are us messing around with these ridiculous fur coats. I think we looked like aristocrats and all around cool dudes, but Ahmed’s look really takes home the cake. I hope you all enjoy these portraits of an awesome and close friend, coincidentally he’s wearing the same hat in all three pictures.
Technical details: Photo 1, Nikon F w/ 50mm f1.8 ais and Kodak Portra 400; Photo 2, Minolta X-700 w/ MD Minolta 50mm f1.4 and Expired Kodak 400 Tmax; Photo 3: Mamiya C220 80mm f2.8 provia 100f shot at night.

Breaking portraits up as I need to get film developed and retake some portraits as well. For now, enjoy this set of images with red as a theme. For me, red is a color that really pops in a lot of situations, and it’s a color I welcome when it creeps into a scene I’m trying to capture.
Technical details: Voigtlander Bessa R2 and 35mm Color-Skopar. Lomography 800 (If you’re looking for a cheap alternative to Kodak Portra, buy this one.)

This will the first set of photos in a short and improvisational series of an Intimate look at my friends. So I would like to first introduce my good friend Chris Blount. I’ve known him since freshmen year of college. We were part of a program called Success Academy started by Georgia State to help students with lower GPAs coming out of high school and ease their transition into university. I’m very grateful to have been part of that program because it’s allowed me to meet some awesome people and has, in part, made me the student I am today. Chris is also equally, if not, more successful than I am in academics and in his career aspirations. He’s a film student at GSU and wants to be a producer and director. You’ll never meet a kinder individual with more passion for cinema. Additionally, he is into a medley of different musics, but from what I know, he’s really into metal. We can always share a good laugh or have serious conversation, and that’s a quality I appreciate in a friend.

I took some long exposures of my neighborhood after it snowed with expired film. When I scanned it last night, I really loved the bluish and retro tones that the expired film put out. Film: Kodak Ultramax 400 expired in 2006.

Atlanta 2017. Centennial olympic park. I find myself photographing scenes where I’m far from people, probably because I’ve felt far from people in the first place. I reflect on this fact because a friend told me today that we photograph what means the most to us. Distance probably means the most to me because that is how I feel with people and it’s for that reason that I got into photography, to close the distance.
This shot was taken on cinestill 800T pushed one stop and scanned at home on a canoscan 9000f mark ii.
