You could not have told this story of friendship any better.

a) This version of the legend was never about Merlin becoming Court Sorcerer and receiving recognition for all he has done. As he said to his dying friend, it was his destiny to serve Arthur and he was proud of that. The beauty of this story was always in the way Merlin did what he did with absolute selflessness, not thinking about himself, but Arthur. Merlin was the silent hero in the wings, who sacrificed everything. 

b) At no stage ANYWHERE within the five years of this show would this magic reveal have been as powerful and as pivotal as it was when it happened at last. 

c) The ONLY person who EVER needed to know and UNDERSTAND... was Arthur. Just so he knew, just so he understood. And in the end, he did.
