What is your favorite…

Character design: I genuinely love eret’s design to death. I love how strongly rectangles and triangles influence his overall shape and style, and what they might convey/imply about his character.

Not to mention how visually interesting they make his silhouette. And while I specifically love his design in 2, I think he has one of the BEST dragon armor sets in 3. Plus the beetle aesthetic is gorgeous and suits him so well.

But back to the point, I really really like how much care has been put into making him feel different from the riders- in everything up to and including body language, colors, and proportions.

His design fits the role it serves in the story perfectly, and while his narrative arc does include a little bit of wishy washing and side changing (ofc) I think that using such strong, grounded shape language on every part of his design really helps the viewer quickly understand and feel like he is not normally like this— that he’s not a weasely traitor, but instead a very grounded person who may have a strong sense of self but who is also undergoing a lot of change very quickly.

By relying on the shape language so strongly like that, And really emphasizing these key visual points, I think it allowed for less necessary screen time to establish these same character traits. (Regardless of how much I really would have loved to see those scenes..)

All in all, I think it is a character design that does exactly what it is supposed to, and does it exceedingly well.

Character: surprisingly difficult question.... gonna go with snotlout. though it was very hard to pick just one.

Dragon from the main 5: I really really love Stormfly. No deep analysis here, sorry, I just saw her when I was 12 and haven’t been able to fall out of love with her since lol her design is gorgeous and her personality is top tier

Though if I had to pick one to RIDE I think I’d go with hookfang… maybe… he’s kind of a dick lmaoo but I really like the idea of riding a living fireball

But yes. My answer for this is stormfly.

Dragon species overall: I think.. I really really quite enjoy The Red Death. Or red deaths? I can’t remember ever seeing or hearing about another one. But I thought this species was such a fantastically unique take on dragons, and was a masterful display of fantastical design grounded by evolutionary logic.

Of course I’m not saying it’s the most logical dragon ever, but there are leaps of logic made in universe that align with and underscore the universes logic.

anyway.

Ship: another really tricky one lol of.

it tends to fluctuate, but as of right now I've been really really intrigued by the idea of Snotlout/Dagur

Character dynamic: Astrid and snotlout... I think they have a fascinating relationship, and it's really entertaining to watch it slowly grow into a more sibling-like dynamic as the franchise continues.

Villain: I mean I think we all know viggo was the best (or at least TOP 2) villain in the entirety of the franchise. really really enjoyed him, wish we had gotten to see more of him :(

Episode: really enjoy ' something rotten on berserker island' season 5 episode 3 a lot :)

Joke: 100% snotlout holding up a naked twig and referring to it as his childhood.

you've opened the floodgates. now we all wanna know your snotlout hottakes. your snottakes, if you will

Absolutely I will. This may be a Very hot snottake but:

Most Snotlout Angst is insanely OOC

Which SUCKS because I am weak for some good whump, I would Pay for quality Snotlout angst!! But 95% of the fics can all be boiled down to Snotlout being emo and hiding the abuse and “oh it’s Silent Suffering you wouldn’t understand [insert edgy hair swish]” and. Ok maybe that could apply in some way to RoB but THE FICS ARE ALWAYS SET IN RTTE!!!

Snotlout is canonically VERY open about this stuff!! He makes trauma jokes 24/7 to the others, they’re some of his funniest lines. Wdym your hedge sculpture is a single broken twig titled “Barren Soul Wrapped In Nothingness or My Lousy Childhood.” Who let you outside. I’m putting him in the microwave.

The others know about Spitelout sucking and the emotional abuse, they have known for a while. Hell, they’re present for half of it!

The angst in canon that I Really Wish was more expanded on in the fandom is more along the lines of everyone is Aware but they’re all stuck in being unable to help without making things worse so it’s just mutual horrified paralysis. Where are the fics about THAT. We know the shit Spitelout does is obvious, that doesn’t make it less realistic that makes it better in terms of implications and angst potential

Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl!
