TIME ENSHRINED

Experimenting with using Tumblr as a kind of information organizing device for projects I’m working on. Currently the focus is on an academic paper on recorded audio loops, their potential to give ‘transcendent’ peak experiences, the unprecedented power in omnipresent technology to create them, and how this plays into a larger conversation of reestablishing a spiritually edifying relationship with technology in a so-called “post-human” age. HMU.

Podcast discussing Byung-Chul Han and the reenchantment or discovery as time as healer of ‘inferno of sameness’.
Email to myself about Basinski, hearing the repetition differently in loops. Repetition in music paradoxically a means of puncturing and disrupting homogeneity and sameness.
An article about St. Augustine’s views on time. A quote from Aristotle here.

“Mesmerized by the images flitting about on our computer screens, we become dull, predatory flies buzzing at the window screen of our computers, desperate to consume all the futility of the world. Yet, we are not the predators, but the prey. We are not the users of information technologies and social media, but rather we are being used, manipulated, and exploited by them.”

Updated STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The purpose of this study is to consider the potential of audio loop creation and contemplation as a means of integrating technology into a way of life that promotes a unified psyche and is sustainable from a spiritual point of view. Although musicians and composers will be considered, the primary audience I have in mind is anyone has a phone/tablet and is seeking to find alternatives to the role technologies are currently playing, namely as mechanisms of control by corporate entities.

Statement of problem. The question that remains difficult to answer is “Why loops?” How do these different themes connect and center around the primary theme of loops? Themes of technological temptations, using tech for a liberating creative engagement with the world, using loop creation for contemplation, for meditation, for altered states of consciousness, for heightened awareness of time and Being.
Loops are the hero of the story. The ‘villian’ is technological enslavement, as well as general sense of unconscious and unaware state of mind. Loops are one of many ways? A way in that is simple and powerful?
My audience is not necessarily musicians.

“You know, loops are everywhere. They’re cycles. They’re in nature. They’re just universal. And if you can find a loop that can repeat without becoming redundant, then you can sort of fall into a different space, and time even. Sort of like a bubble of eternity or something, I don’t know.”
