Someone with a disability does something that they know is painful. But it's okay, because they're only doing it once. They don't want to miss out on it 100%, they can handle the pain once in a while, and they have a chance to recharge after it. They know that they can always stop if it ends up being more painful than expected. They could also be experimenting to see how different circumstances affect their pain. They also don't complain, because they don't want to make a big deal out of it.

Someone who witnesses them do it immediately assumes that they "can". Even if they've seen consistent evidence of the disability, they forget that the struggle ever existed and start expecting it like it's nothing.

i just finished "The Underwood Tapes" by Amanda Hewitt and

i have never read a book that so thuroughly and poetically captures the nature of grief and loss. the kind of tragedy where its tragic because no matter what, it was always going to end this way. no matter how much we wish for someone back, no matter how much we tell ourselves "if only i could have done something", it doesnt change the outcome. the cycles. the symbolism. the mystery and intrigue. the emotion. that was the best book i have read in so so long.

everything about how Jake and Grace interacted throughout the story perfectly encapsulates the sudden nature of death and loss. Grace thinks she knows how much time she has with him, with the tapes. but even when you know something is going to end, sometimes it comes more abruptly than anyone could have thought. we never find out where the rest of the tapes went. lots of people never find out what happened to Jake. or to Charley. Grace may never remember what exactly happened in that accident. Because once someone is dead, theyre dead. You cant ask follow up questions. you cant simply know what happened. but you can find pieces. messages on cassettes. old pictures. old band shirts in boxes in the closet. AUGH ITS SO GOOD??? AND SO WELL WRITTEN??????? THE KIND OF BOOK TO HAVE ME STAYING UP UNTIL 3 READING WHEN I HAVE WORK AT 9 THE NEXT DAY

i saw "strange things happen with cassette tapes" and as a fan of The Magnus Archives was immediately sold. The Web would LOVE Grace and Jake. Definently going to check out more works by Amanda Hewitt!!! love the writing style :)
