It's been too long, literally! I apologize for being so horribly late (though it still is July) with this chapter. The truth is that the past six weeks haven't been kind to me; I've taken a hit after a hit and gone into a month-long tailspin. Yet, I'm still somehow gliding through all of this, doing my best, but I'm basically just waiting for an inevitable crash landing. Figurative speech aside, my personal life is such a mess right now, and it has started to really affect every aspect of my life. Therefore I cannot promise a new chapter for next month, but I'll definitely keep writing. I just can't force it right now.

The Q&A final!

Here’s the answer part of the Q&A! Thank you for participating and being so patient with me!

Most of the questions was sent to me in Tumblr. I love how creative you were with the questions! o(≧∇≦o) This page can also be found in Ao3 for now too!

So here we go!

What do you study, or are you already in working life?

I’m studying a degree for Finnish Sign Language and Interpretation, which also includes deaf and culture studies. I still have one and (hopefully) the last year to go until my graduation! Therefore, I haven’t done any professional work yet, but I have done some part-time work alongside my studies.

What inspired you to make the Reignited?

Music and songs have been the biggest source of inspiration in making this story. Almost every chapter in the Reignited has a song behind it; the songs either set me in the right mood or awaken a scene in my head, or just had great lyrics that fit the chapter well! For the series, the idea came while I was listening Malukah’s song ‘Reignite’, which is kind of a tribute to the Mass Effect video games. I loved how the song interpreted the determination to reignite to fight after heavy losses and disappointments in such an epic fashion. In the end I got so absorbed in writing that I forgot to think the series a name, so I ended up leaving it Reignited. Since I was deep in Haikyuu!! hype, it was no brainer to make the series a Haikyuu fanfiction. At first, I started to write a reader-inserted story in which the Reader falls in love with just one soldier, but then I couldn’t decide who. I had seven potential options. After struggling some time, I just thought ‘Heck, I’ll just write them all here.’, crossed my fingers, and hoped everything would work out!

Who is your favorite character (other than the Reader)? Are they also your favorite to write?

I must say my favorite character is Kuroo. I just love how his character has been designed in Haikyuu!!; he’s sly but grounded, yet such a dork at times. It’s easy to “get into” his mind set. That’s probably why he also pops up all the time; it’s so easy to write him into the story! Of course, I like the other characters (Bokuto and Iwaizumi close behind) too, but Kuroo is my number one, haha!

Are any of the characters in the series LGBTQ+?

For those who doesn’t know what ‘LGBTQ+’ means, it’s an initialism for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer, plus all the others sexuality and gender identities in the community. I won’t go into these terms since Internet is full of information about them.

I have been neutral considering the character’s sexual orientation and identities, since there’s no indication of the topic in the original Haikyuu!! series. Of course, in fanfiction anyone can be anything. Only after this question I started to think all the possibilities and came up a few that could work in the story. Here’s some that I thought: Akaashi (pan), Bokuto (queer), Oikawa (bi), Nishinoya (bi), Asahi (gay), Takeda (gay), and Ukai (ace). It’s safe to suggest that everyone in the Elites would be allies, meaning they consider themselves friends to the LGBTQ+ community. Still, Iwaizumi would have pledged to be the straightest straight, especially what comes to Oikawa (their friendship is complicated enough)!

These are just my opinions which the question brought up! Since I haven’t stated any character’s sexuality in the story up to this time, I won’t state them later either. I’m really glad this was asked, though!

Who of the characters makes the Reader most flustered?

The Reader gets the most flustered (in a meaning of her being a confused blushing mess) in situations where love and affection is genuinely poured on her so straightforwardly that it takes her by surprise. Every Elite is capable of doing this, but Sugawara has honed this ability to perfection. He can do it anywhere at any time without making it look forced, and it’s impossible to run from it; it’s a direct hit every time.

But if the meaning was to ask who makes the Reader feel super agitated in a negative manner, the answer is Ushijima (I think the Lady makes her more like threatened than anxious). The Reader and Ushijima’s viewpoints clash all the time; there, where Ushijima is blunt and unyielding, the Reader leaves many things unsaid and is flexible. Of course, Ushijima doesn’t realize this, and the Reader isn’t going to break the news to him any time soon.

Will there be more romantic interactions between the Reader and the others after the individual chapters?

There’ll be light romantic interactions between the Reader and the others along the story. The chapters that focus on certain Elite x Reader relationship takes the spot light, of course, but the others won’t be forgotten! I try to keep those smaller interactions natural, so they won’t seem forced. I also want those interactions to support the characters’ personal traits; Akaashi won’t cling to the Reader like some koala, Iwaizumi won’t sing love songs to her, and so on (I wanted to write an example of Bokuto too, but then I realized that damn, nothing holds back that boi, haha).

Have you ever thought about how the Reader deal with her periods?

This one was super interesting question!

I once thought about writing about this subject in the first chapters, but it felt too forced back then and would most definitely made things super weird! I had thought describing how confused the men in the base were the day sanitary protection items appeared their store. This needed to change though, because every time the Reader bought the said items, the soldiers started to analyze her mood a bit too much. Later she just ordered all the needed items with the other medical supplies and picked them up from the clinic. The Elites figured out the Reader’s cycle quite fast. Some of them jokingly use the term ‘Redmoon’ to warn each other whenever they sense she is a bit snappier than usual. It’s also very effective way to piss the Reader off!

I realized that it’d be easy to write some funny side-story about this subject, haha! It’d definitely turn into a funny mess!

Are you going to make another reader-inserted Haikyuu!! story after the Reignited series?

I have though a short-story series which focuses on the Haikyuu!! world, but I haven’t planned anything yet! (´～ヾ) If you have ideas, I’ll gladly hear them; maybe I could get inspired from your ideas!

What are you planning to write in the future?

There are at least three different stories that I’ve been plotting while working with the Reignited series. One of them is based on Haikyuu!!; Kuroo Tetsurou x Tsukishima Kei (folklore/supernatural!AU). The two others would be reader-inserted stories from different fandoms:

Aizawa Shota x teacher/psychologist!Reader (Boku no Hero Academia/ My Hero Academia)

Nicolas Brown x deaf!Reader (GANGSTA)

These are works that I’ve planned some time already. I heard about GANGSTA only this spring, and oh boy, I’m hooked (thank you Skull for introducing me to this masterpiece ♡)! Maybe it’s my studies that got me so hooked on the series, but damn, I just can’t get over this hype, haha! Still, these are some works that feel super interesting stories to write. I don’t know how long it will take to get started with these as I still write the Reignited series, but I can’t wait to show them to you!

I’m still alive, and you know what? It’s a Q&A time! I’m so happy that you got excited about the Q&A too (or no one went against it at least, haha)! (｢･ω･)｢

A small revision first:

Here on Tumblr, Emy--m gave me an idea of organizing a Q&A for you! I really loved the idea since it’d give everyone a possibility to ask anything they desire without feeling pressured! I know there are people who are too shy or somehow embarrassed to ask questions or clarifications, so I hope this Q&A will encourage you to just fire away!╭( ･ㅂ･)و ̑̑

What kind of questions can I ask?

Honestly, the questions can be anything; they can be about the Reignited series, the creation of the chapters, behind the scenes, deleted scenes, my future projects... or they can be more personal like what I find easy/hard to write, what I do when I’m not writing nor working, where the idea x came from, why Kuroo appears in almost every damn chapter I write, what’s my second favorite ice cream flavor... seriously, surprise me! I’m open to any questions as long as they’re proper; I’ll delete all the inappropriate questions without a warning!

Are there any rules?

Though I wrote in the latest chapter that ‘while the rules are the lifeline to others, to the Reader they are merely options’, I still feel the need to state a few of them:

1. The deadline will be on 3rd of April! It gives you about 20 full days to leave your questions starting today!  ? (‘•̀ ▽ •́ )φ__ ? ?

2. You can leave your questions in Ao3 under this chapter’s comment section or here in my Tumblr’s ‘Ask away!’ or this post’s comment section! You can either ask questions anonymously or with your nick, I’m fine with both!

Writing problems #001

I once saw a tip for writers that said something like "If your characters start to live the story on their own, you're doing your writing right". I mean, I get it, it makes the characters more natural and the story flows better.

But is it normal for you to write chapter 25 and realize in the middle of writing it why something happened in the first chapter? Is it normal to be the author and think "Wait? Wait, what? What did you just say??" or "Oh, wow, okay, I have no idea why you did that but it seems relevant."? Like, I'm supposed to be in control here so why do I learn these things this late? Why you characters - - It's my plot, goddammit, don't fiddle it behind my back! Grrr! ٩(ఠ^ఠ ')و

The layout of Crow’s Nest

I was recently asked if I could make a map of Crow’s Nest, especially the barracks of the Elites, for the Reignited series. I never made a clear plan for myself about the layout until now. Sure, I made the map of Arylean to clarify where everything is for the readers (and myself), but I never really thought deeply of anything. Someone asked in Ao3 ages ago if I could make a map of Crow’s Nest, but I failed to do one back then. Yet, as I’ve written the series, I have (finally) formed an idea of how the base looks like and this time managed to put that idea on paper.

Since Crow’s Nest is pretty much the main setting of the series, I decided to make an information package about the base for everyone!

CROW’S NEST

Note: the full map is the earlier posts.

The base of Crow’s Nest is situated at the roots of Aouina’s mountain range on the western side of the Sweet River. The mountains provide protection against attacks from the south and the east. The hilly and bushy landscape makes the base next to invisible when approached through the wasteland. Since there isn’t a marked road to the base, the soldiers need to be educated on how to navigate there by using different landmarks. This is the main reason why Crow’s Nest favors using trained drivers. Though vegetation is frugal in the wasteland, Arylean’s warm climate and continual rains make it possible for deciduous forests to grow near the mountain (these forests aren’t as exuberant as the ones at riversides though). Crow’s Nest was built next to a forest because the soil close to forests is moister and therefore it won’t become dusty as much. 

The base is surrounded by tall barbed wire fences and anti-tank obstacles. The fences have motion sensors and surveillance cameras, which alarm the base if something unidentified moves along the fence. There are two roads in; one on the east side and one on the north side of the base. The northern road is only used in emergencies. Before you can enter the base, there’s a guard point where the approaching vehicle is identified. The guards have rights to search any car or do security checks. Crow’s Nest has also a small heliport for two helicopters to the south-east from the base’s center, but the sand field in front of the main building serves as a place to land for a quick stop too.

THE LAYOUT OF THE BASE

A/N: I feel the need to emphasize to all of you that I didn’t think much of the scale while drawing these. All the architects and engineers and anyone who knows about these things here, I am so sorry.

COLORCODES! 

ORANGE (1) = The main building. This is where accounting and most of the offices, including the commander’s office, are situated. All the incoming missions are handled and checked in the main building from where they are sent to the soldiers who are most suitable to carry them out. There’s also a small police station and interrogation rooms, plus the base’s prison is located under the main building.

AQUA GREEN (2) = The logistics center and the storages (+ some apartments for some of the base’s workers). Every delivery will be unloaded in the logistics center and sorted; the kitchen and the shop’s orders are immediately moved to the shop, the medical supplies are collected for the pickup, and the mail is sorted. The commander’s mail is taken always straight to his office, but the other mail is just gathered for the person in charge to pick up. The mail is usually sorted according to where it’s going (the Elites have their own pile, the Rookies their own, the one for the clinic go along with their supplies, and so on).

RED (3) = The library (with accessible computers), lecture halls and classrooms, the soldiers’ recreation room… this is basically where the soldiers go to spend free time if they don’t choose to use it for training.

BROWN (4) = The shop. Has pretty much anything that a soldier can need while living in the middle of nowhere (from clothes to snacks to toiletries and playing cards). If something cannot be found, it can be ordered through the shop. Also manages all the canteen’s orders and shares the cold stores with the kitchen.

WINE RED/ MAROON (5) = The canteen and kitchens. The skillful staff provides healthy meals and coffee breaks for everyone in the base around the clock.

FUCHSIA (6) = The clinic. Includes the emergency room/office, the doctor’s office, operating rooms, hospital wards, and a morgue. Also has a few rooms for the staff in order to provide help at any times for the needed.

PASTEL PINK (7) = The chapel. Quite small but serves its purpose for those who need guidance.

PURPLE (8) = The training center. A gym, different gym halls (with and without mattresses), and an inner shooting range for handguns are located there with all the needed equipment found from the storage (8a). Outside, behind the gravel field, is an open-air shooting range (8b) where most of the sharp-shooting training are held.

DARK BLUE (9) = The barracks. Includes the barracks for Rookies, the trainers, and other “veterans”, most of the staff members, and the possible visitors. There’s also a small lounge with couches in the northern wing. The Rookies’ barracks is connected to the Elites’ barracks with a hallway.

LIGHT BLUE (10) = The Elites’ barracks. Has totally four rooms for the Elites as well as a small lounge and kitchen plus showers. Because of their busy and erratic schedules, the Elites have their own kitchen to prepare a quick meal.

TURQUOISE (11) = The locker room. Basically, the starting and ending point for every mission. Here the soldiers can get their equipment for a mission (gears, guns, blades, helmets, etc.). Upon returning, they also place everything back in their places and can have a quick shower if needed there too. Every soldier is responsible of taking care of their equipment and its overall cleanness and functionality.

YELLOW (12) = The garages. The upper parts of the garages (12a) are mean for repair and maintenance, but a few vehicles are always held in the garage halls for quick access. In the same building, next to the halls is a spare part storage. The lower parts (12b) are garages for the bigger and more rarely used vehicles. There’s also refueling station at the end of the long garage.

GREEN (13) = The communication center, the IT center, and the workshops. The communication center is located in the tower and there’s a clear view over the base. The communication center is the brain of the base and has all the latest technology to support Crow’s Nest’s teams on the field. Everything can be controlled from there and its main reason is to provide services anyone in need. The center’s main power supply is the electricity center in the forest (14), but it also has emergency batteries which allow the center to watch over the base even if the electricity is lost. The workshops are under the IT and communication center, and they are responsible to tend to everything that the garages, the communication center, and the IT center can’t fix.

GREY BOX with LIGHTNING SYMBOL (14) = The electricity and power center. It’s the main power supply in the base and therefore only the mechanics have access there.

Dashed lines on the map represent roads and walkways but they definitely aren’t absolute (you don’t need to walk through the library to get from clinic to the main building). They are there to show how they could be.

The dark grey patches (without black lining) are gravel fields. The one on the top right corner (next to the chapel and the canteen) is the obstacle course. It can be lengthened with the forest track if needed. The black-colored structure under it is a warehouse. Another similar warehouse is located next to the Elites’ barracks; it withholds the Elites’ special gears and other equipment, or anything they have decided to store there. The other gray structures are undefined storages or free space.

A/N: The base also has a heliport (as mentioned earlier), but I didn’t place it on a map. If its location is important for someone, I planned for it to be under the ‘Crow’s Nest’ text.

THE LAYOUT OF THE BARRACKS OF THE ELITES

A/N: As you can see it’s quite plain, but I want to leave some room for imagination (I nearly lost my mind while trying to figure out which direction the doors should open so I just left them as lines). I didn’t map the Elites’ rooms either since they don’t really serve the plot. Of course, if you have ideas of how their rooms could look like, I’d love to hear/see them!
