Dixeebe Tobala is produced by Valentin Cortes in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. The maguey Tobala (Agave potatorum) used in this mezcal are cooked in an underground pit oven, milled by tahona, and double distilled in a copper still. Only 882 bottles produced world wide. Only 48 allocated to Australia. Dixeebe Mezcal (pronounced “dee-sh-bay”) is a project from Asis Cortes and his father, Valentin Cortes. Their family has been producing mezcal in the Santiago Matatlán region of Oaxaca for at least 180 years. The two of them are perhaps most well-known in Mexico and internationally for their previous work with Mezcal El Jolgorio and Nuestra Soledad. Asis and Valentin have now moved on from the Casa Cortes brands and are focused on Dixeebe, along with Asis’ brand in Durango: Origen Raiz. Asis and his father decided to launch Dixeebe as a way to reconnect with their past and support their traditions in the future. The brand launched internationally in March 2022 where it is sold in 375ml bottles. Asis had the idea of smaller bottles to make premium mezcal more accessible. It is spoken in reverence to give thanks - a single honorific word of respect and love for the moment and its importance. Dixeebe is the purest expression of gratitude for our traditions and ancestors. We see mezcal as a gift from the gods and “Dixeebe” is our offering of thanks in return. Artifacts from our family’s history can still be found in the wilderness of Santiago Matatlán. Previous generations had carved out fermentation pits in the bedrock, leaving relics of rocky cavities on our ancestral lands that serve as permanent testaments to their ingenuity and fortitude. With Mezcal Dixeebe, we honor our ancestors with mezcal made from the same magueys, grown under the same sun and traditionally produced by mezcaleros with the same blood pumping in our veins. The Cortés family, and the Hernández family of Valentín’s wife, Irma, are stewards of ancestral mezcal production in their hometown of Santiago Matatlán. Their sons Asis, Marisol and Giovani are the latest generation in a long line of mezcaleros, unifying both sides of the family tree as modern embodiments of their culture with an adherence to deeply rooted traditions. Pescador de Sueños Mezcal is a project of the Santa Sabia Distillery. They present unique collections of select mezcales in hope of rescuing the mysticism and folklore of this ancient Mexican tradition. Cuentacuentos released its first 6 mezcal expressions in 2018; future releases from the brand will change over time and include non-certified mezcals. The logo and bottle artwork (by artist Cesar Ruiz Conseco) features an opossum or tlacuache in Spanish. The tlacuache on the logo is El Viejito, the little old man opposum who stole mezcal from the demons as a service to humanity. The tlacuache ranks with the jaguar, eagle, and burro in importance in Zapotec, Taina, and Mexican mythologies. Cuentacuentos is bottled under NOM-O20X by Carlos Méndez Blas.
