I wasn't entirely sure if I wanted to share this, yet alone even record it. But I found it completely necessary to speak up. Hope you enjoy, and sorry that the video is soooooo long.
Love you, Shary.
Sailor Melanin was actually born from an Instagram post on my personal account. I decided to wear two puffs in my hair to work, some glittery makeup and wood moon earrings. I took a picture and captioned it “Sailor Melanin”. My friend was like, “ooh. That would be a cute cosplay!” I agreed, but didn’t think about it until I was in Joanns and walked past some kente fabric.
I bought a body suit from capezios and made the skirt and collar from fabric I bought from Joanns. I actually struggled a bit because I tried to use a pattern I bought…and it was waaaaaay undersized. Numbers lie.
I was super surprised by the response at the con. It went over way better than I thought. I had never been stopped for so many pictures! People told me they were inspired by me, and I was shocked. I inspire people? That was a crazy thought to me. I just thought it would be great to present the idea that there are black girls who grow up with magical girl dreams too.
I met my best friends through cosplay. I am relaxed and most at peace when sewing a cosplay. Cosplay brings my family together. I found confidence I didn’t know I had, pride that was dormant and a way to physically advocate the things that matter to me.
I don’t care who you are, cosplay is for everybody and EVERY BODY. Never do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable just to meet a standard. Cosplay the characters you love because you love them:)
“TAMI LAHREN: “I have never seen a First Lady be attacked like this … for the good deeds that she’s done. Can you imagine if we would sit here on Fox News and attack Michelle Obama for something that she was trying to do to better the country?”
…You mean like this:"

Question:
Do you think Republican pundits forget all the things they’ve said or do you think Republican pundits know their rabid fanbase will eat up whatever pops up from Fox News?
It’s definitely the second one.
I don’t watch Fox News, yet I know the bobbleheads over there said terrible things about Michelle Obama. With that said, there are people (especially white people over 50) who have Fox News on all day long.
That’s not an exaggeration. I grew up in the South, and a lot of my friends tell me they go to their parents’ house or their grandparents’ house for a holiday or something and Fox News is on all day long. You go to the doctor’s office and it’s on in the waiting room. You go to a restaurant and it’s on behind the bar between two college football games. Fox News is an ever-present staple in the lives of so many white people, so if I with a glancing knowledge of Fox News can sit here and realize immediately that Tawny Lozenge is lying, every person who watches Fox News day in and day out must also know that Tonsil Labrador is lying.
So if they know their gatekeepers of political thought are lying and they have no desire to correct those lies (and worse! they repeat those lies as fact to the opposition), that makes me hate all of them even more because they know she’s lying and they don’t care. It also stands to reason that they know other lies the same way we can spot other lies and none of it matters. If they were honest, they could probably spot lies that we can’t by dint of the fact that they have much more familiarity with what’s being spoon-fed to them. They don’t care. They just let the lies proliferate as long as they’re “winning” this imaginary battle where White America comes out on top and suddenly their mediocre lives are elevated at the expense of all the brown people.
Fox News lies to them and they just repeat the lies inside their own bubble and everybody involved knows that they’re lies. And that’s why I can’t have anything to do with any of them.
