People keep talking about Ten's vanity as a reason that he didn't want to regenerate, but I just don't see it that way at all. Yes, he's a very vain and arrogant beast if you are reading his character on a facile level, but that character note only covers up deep insecurities and a feeling of low self-worth. This is a veteran with terrible survivor's guilt and PTSD. He doesn't want to stop being Ten because that's his last connection to Rose, who is the person who gave him his self-worth back, and told him again and again that he was worthy of love. Told him that he was more than his perceived crimes, and that he could become even more than he had ever thought he could ascend to again. Despite the fact that in the end he feels he failed without her in his life, he doesn't want to let go of the person he became for her because he truly feels he has been better in a way that he might lose entirely if he lets go of the person he is for her sake. The fact that people boil it all down to him really liking the way he looks or something like that really just burns me, actually.

When it's like this, getting up to move and do something necessary... really becomes just a lot less necessary, doesn't it.

at a conference I attended recently, a researcher pointed to the difficulty of finding material in archives because so much depends on the metadata and the terminology used to describe things changes over time. "it would be so helpful," the researcher said, "if I typed 'lesbian' into the library of congress database, it would also show me results that were categorised in the 50s, when the materials were interpreted as 'intimate female friendships'"
which is what tag wrangles at Archive Of Our Own do incredibly effectively: searching for "omegaverse" also leads to "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" and "alternate universe: a/b/o" and so on. but ao3 achieves this frankly incredible categorisation and indexing system by the power of countless volunteers putting in hours and hours of unpaid and unthanked free time, and it's completely understandable that most archives do not have that kind of infrastructure, but also how incredible that a fan-run website has better searchability, classification, and accessibility than the library of congress

Books on Libby have started disappearing.
My friend pointed it out first, and then I started noticing too. Why would books that multiple libraries definitely, 100% had digital access to a couple of months/weeks/days ago disappear?
Amazon is getting exclusive rights to them.
Ebooks that the public library once had digital copies of are now only available through Amazon. Audible boasts on their covers about Audible-exclusive audiobooks that did not used to be Audible-exclusive. Entire series and collections are disappearing overnight.
Keep your eyes on the privatization of media and your libraries.

A “shop class”?? What the fuck is british edu system so bad you guys need classes on how to shop?? That is insane
No wonder your country is in the state it is say hello to Charles for me, give him a little kiss on his monarch ass
I don't know if they have this in British schools, but they had it in most US schools I was familiar with (until recently, anyway). Some of them I think are going away because of the cost of all the machinery, but to clear it up, "shop class" is short for "wood shop", "mechanics shop", or similar, and is a class where you learn how to do wood-working and weld and solder things... though nowadays I think they do a lot more things with computers to draft their projects, some of them learn how to do plastics extruding, and there's also mechanic shop regular how to work on vehicles. It's a little bit like an embedded trade school, for the kids who are less academically inclined and want to learn how to do something with their hands is that they might be able to use in future for a job.
Edit: traditionally shop classes were for boys and home economics was for girls, because in home economics class you were learning how to do what they would consider traditional homemaker skills, like cooking and sewing. However it's a lot more likely to be just a class you continue if you are interested no matter your gender nowadays... if they even have these classes at all of late, which they sometimes don't. It's a little bit of a holdover from the time when people usually had two separate tracks they took in school, where you could choose one that taught you trades or you could choose one that taught you the things you needed to then go on to college. But then they started encouraging all kids to go to college whether they wanted to or not instead of going on to trade schools or whatever, and so that got a little muddy.

Some recent studies have actually put forth that the only reason humans became the apex creature on this planet is because we made a partnership with one of the other apex predators from our original habitat, and by it created a symbiosis that was unbeatable. And then once we knew how to work with other apex predators, it was pretty simple from then on out to recognize that these partnerships have enormous merit. (Also they give us emotional security, but that's a nice side benefit.)
I love that I share my house with one of the most efficient apex predators millions of years of evolution could produce. I love that two of nature’s most prolific machines met and were like “hmmm. We should lay around and do nothing together”. Now we’re both fat and happy and full of meat. The hedonism of it all

Definitely something I've noodled on in my series! And probably will again.
The Tenth Doctor: You, the Metacrisis version of me, have destroyed all the Daleks. In saving the universe, you have committed genocide. You are a danger and the only thing that can make you better is Rose Tyler.
Rose Tyler: *also saved the universe by destroying all the Daleks a while back, an action which was never particularly dwelt on at all*
#doctor who#dr who#the tenth doctor#rose tyler#tenrose#comparative ethics#-> prev#something something it is easier to forgive the ones we love#than to forgive ourselves

When you have to write a part you don't really want to write because you have to get past that part to the next part, but this part is the part you absolutely hate and don't want to have happen at all l... and it's necessary to the plot so you can't change it but you really wish you could.

Democrats are slamming him for sending in the National Guard when that's up to the discretion of State Governors but I don't know if they're doing anything about it which is of course all very nice of all you're doing is talking. Meanwhile we are flirting with martial law.
6/7/2025
The National guard is being deployed to Los Angeles to support ICE.
Mask up. Black bloc. White citizens to the front.
ICE and the LAPD have been firing rubber bullets directly at protesters and utilizing weapons like tear gas.
