Why I never take more than one rest day at a time? Well, for starters I’m in this for the journey! Kind of like when you love your job your not in a rush for the weekend to come and the work week to be over. In fact, I have to force myself to take a rest day. Second, it’s habitual. Taking two or more consecutive days off at a time from training can sometimes create the tendency to get used to being inactive. It’s sort of like when we have a full cheat day instead of just a cheat meal. It’s harder to bounce back to a normal routine if you had an entire day of cheat meals or maybe even a cheat weekend! I believe the same applies when it comes to taking time off from training. Another reason is the the process of protein synthesis. When we train, especially resistance training our body is spending up to 24-48 hours some times rebuilding and refueling the cells of the muscles that were worked. That said, there is an advantage to taking only one rest day at a time right after a training day and allowing that time to be used wisely while your body is in the process of protein synthesis. There are a multitude of other reasons why I break my rest days up into every 3 or 4 days but these are a few. I would like to note that I am not anti-rest and that what works for me may not work for you but I just wanted to share my take on this topic. I promise it’s simple but you need consistency. 1. If you want to be “toned” or lean you must have some form of effective resistance training in your regimen. The more muscle you have the more calories you naturally burn. When it comes to cardio remember that the harder you work during the time of training the more calories your body will be burning afterwards. For example, walking for one hour, jogging for 30, or doing sprint intervals for 20 minutes… which do you think is gonna have your metabolism spiked even when the work is done? The sprint interval training, you burn more calories in a shorter time and you can not sustain a sprint as long as you can sustain a walk or moderate job. I will get into the science of this later on to help y’all better understand this. 2. Track your food because what gets measured gets accounted for. You don’t have to obsess about it but at least start with having an idea of how much/what you are consuming. 3. Water is gold, if more than 70% of our bodies and muscles are made of water why shouldn’t it be a priority to achieve any fitness goal? Water also helps you feel fuller, sometimes you are not even hungry, you are thirsty without even knowing it! Take a look at your urine, if it is not clear you may need to drink more water. Lastly, you need energy to move but if you are dehydrated you are most likely fatigued 🤷🏽♂️ 4. For me, this is most important to achieve success in anything… DISCIPLINE! You gotta remember your why, especially in the times when you feel tempted to sacrifice what you are working hard for to please others or to temporarily please yourself. No one can do it for you… in the great words of @mikerashid “my reps won’t make you buff”. In this game, you have to put your own work in. These are just a few tips and methods that I have applied in my own fitness journey and my clients’. The transition is real… This year has been nothing short of amazing. I have shared with y’all before how I was 196LBS when I began my fitness journey and I was able to drop down to 145LBS after 6 months of hard work. Well, that was 8 years ago. This time around I not only broke chains and made changes physically but my mind has transitioned and elevated. I do not look the same, I do not feel the same, I am not the same… I AM beyond better. I spent years spinning my wheels in the gym, in the kitchen, and in life PERIOD. I learned a lot along the way and one thing I was sure of in all those times of uncertainty was that I was not about to give up! Yeah I know, I used to not like warming up either…. Just like many other people I thought that going straight into the workout would “maximize” my time in the gym. However, as I have gotten older and more seasoned I realized that there is no point in rushing to weights if I can risk getting injured due to not warming up and then not being able to workout at all. Also, I became enlightened with how much my training could enhance by the right warm-up as well. So in this post I explain just a few reasons why you should be utilizing a proper dynamic warm-up.
