Urgent Appeal for Support After Eviction of Marginalized LGBTQIA+ and Intersex Community from Gorom Settlement Camp in South Sudan.
Hello everyone! I'm Vivian, a proud transgender woman raising my voices to advocate for my fellow vulnerable LGBTIQA+ and intersex community as we navigate in this critical circumstances.
Thank you for your ongoing kindness and support during our challenging times. Due to cultural opposition, we were evicted from Gorom Settlement Camp on May 14, 2025. I am extending my GoFundMe campaign to raise $1,000 to help our community relocate to Juba and cover urgent needs like rent, food, transport, healthcare, utilities, and Pride Month (Juneteenth) celebrations. Your assistance will directly impact and uplift our vulnerable community. Every single drops of donations could build a significant difference in our lives. Thank you for your consideration.
Warm regards,

Beyond the Parade: The Need for Year-Round Visibility and Celebration of LGBTQIA+ Identities in Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan.
We are a collective of queer individuals currently navigating life in the Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan. While the LGBTQIA+ and intersex community typically celebrates pride and visibility on designated days each year, we seek to emphasize the importance of ongoing recognition and support for our identities throughout the entire year.
Our journey has been challenging. Previously, we sought asylum in Kenya, but our pleas went unheard. In 2023-2024, we made the decision to come to South Sudan, where we initially received support from UNHCR South Sudan and its partners. We held onto hope when our cases were submitted to the Canadian and U.S. embassies for the resettlement process; however, they are currently on hold due to an executive order issued at the beginning of the current administration.
Unfortunately, UNHCR South Sudan has informed us that our support has been limited, as many organizations assisting refugees have had their operations suspended. Moreover, we have faced eviction from the Gorom Refugee Camp by both the host community and fellow refugees, who claimed that our existence contradicts their traditional cultural beliefs regarding homosexuality.
UNHCR South Sudan has advised us to relocate to urban Juba, the capital of South Sudan. To survive in Juba, we urgently need your help. Our immediate needs include assistance with rent, food, proper medical care, clean water, electricity, hormone therapy for trans individuals, milk for infants, and support for our pride month celebration, especially given our critical circumstances.
Any donated amount will go directly to those in need within our community, and your support would make a significant difference in our lives.
Thank you for considering our request.
Warm regards.

DONATE TO SUPPORT LGBTQ REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS IN GOROM REFUGEE CAMP:
On April 29th, 2025 Rainbow Railroad, a reputable nonprofit organization based in Canada highlighted (on their official Facebook page) the risky and poor living conditions of the LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers in Gorom refugee camp in South Sudan. Rainbow Railroad identifies LGBTQ persons at risk around the world and refers them to the Canadian government for immigration into Canada where they can enjoy homosexual rights. Just like the immigration (resettlement) process through the UNHCR, this immigration process through Rainbow Railroad usually takes years as we suffer in the refugee camps.
Tumblr media
The living conditions of LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers in the Gorom refugee camp in South Sudan are very poor and risky; we suffer from discrimination and homophobic attacks from both the rest of the refugee population in the camp and the host community in addition to lack of basic human needs.
We lack basic human needs like food, decent housing, clothes, sanitary pads, proper medical treatment, clean drinking water, etc. The UNHCR through the World Food Programme provides only about $10 per refugee per month to cater for all the basic needs for the month. This money ($10) barely sustains a person for two days. Many of us have become skinny and malnourished as a result of underfeeding because we survive on one meal a day to be able to pass through the money with the limited financial support for feeding.
The environment we are living in is so risky that there are rampant cases of individuals falling sick of malaria, typhoid, bacterial infections, fungal infections, and recently, there is a overwhelming number of cholera patients. When we fall sick, we have to seek medical treatment from private health facilities and this requires money. A considerable number of members in our LGBTQ refugee community are suffering from complicated diseases and health conditions such as HIV/AIDS, asthma, diabetes, etc. These require urgent and proper medical attention and healthy feeding.
Decent housing has become sort of a luxury as we are living in makeshift structures and tents that leak when it rains, causing inconveniences, discomfort, and sleepless nights. This exposes us, mostly the minors among us to the risk of getting pneumonia and other illnesses associated with coldness. We thus need money to renovate our makeshift structures and replace those that are damaged beyond repair and renovation.
