I searched my blog for the bingo in question, and ended up finding TWO of them, so for fun I took the opportunity to do both!

The thing about Iyami in Osomatsu-san is that the writers have already admitted they don’t really know what to do with him and it’s pretty obvious why: they don’t think he fits with in the modern day setting but at the same time they can’t get too creative with him or fully relegate him to the eventual visual gag or plot device: Iyami was THE reason Osomatsu-kun had the immense grasp on pop culture it did in the 20th century. People asked the Beatles to do the sheeeh when they visited Japan for the first time. Godzilla did the sheeeh in the movies! He was the face of the franchise for over sixty years! I imagine Fujio Pro must be very protective of his image. I’m surprised the -san artists even got approval to change his design from -kun to -san at all, as minimal as the changes were.

The result of that is visible: they could turn Totoko into a violent wannabe idol and Hatabō into a cannibalistic billionaire and make Dayon and Dekapan a gay couple but Iyami had to stay as a mustache-twirling 60s cartoon antagonist, goofy pose / catchphrase combo included. Can’t change him too much, can’t get rid of him. Which is kind of the same issue all retoolings of Scooby-Doo go through if you think about it. The writers can play around with the others and get more or less serious as much as they want but god help them if Scooby and Shaggy aren’t there and they’re not eating a big sandwich.

I will never forget how cool and hot it was when Karamatsu stood up for his lil brother and slapped the goofy out of Osomatsu and fight him and be like “stop being a cunt and get yourself together”

When he isn’t a try-hard he fr is a badass. Like I legit was supporting him in this scenario. Like you really have to piss Karamatsu off to get this side of him. If he’s aggressive with you, you know you were an legit asshole.

my favorite thing to do is go to the comments on an osomatsu san video and translate all the japanese comments about karamatsu

its so funny that the consensus is "when he's not painful, karamatsu is a normal/good looking guy"

and ofc theres a lot of comments that compliment his voice (yuichi nakamura my goat)

i think the differences between the perception of karamatsu in the eng and jp fandoms are really interesting. karas cringeyness is somewhat endearing to us, but i think to japanese fans he's genuinely unbearable to watch lmao
