#Throwback to Thursday when I got to talk with #LEVERArchitecture's Thomas Robinson and two of his knowledgeable staff about #masstimber. LEVER's offices are located in their #AlbinaYard project in #PDX. Albina Yard utilizes a #glulam #timber frame with #CLT panels, the first use of domestically-fabricated CLT for a building-wide structure in the US. LEVER is currently working on #Framework, a mixed-use building with retail, office, and housing that at 12 stories will be the tallest #wood building in the US. #NoFilter on the #UBC campus at #BrockCommons, the tallest #wood building in the world. The world! #ActonOstryArchitects designed, with timber consultancy from #ArchitektenHermannKaufmann. It really looks beautiful. The structure is mostly not exposed, though wood is celebrated as a finish material in common spaces, and #glulam beams and columns are exposed in social spaces on the 18th (top) floor. I got REALLY lucky and ran into one of the superintendents on site, and got to pick his brain about the construction process. Accustomed to working in concrete, he was a BIG fan of structural #masstimber and #prefabrication. Accuracy was within millimeters, and the wood performed better than expected in compression. Went by the #RonaldMcDonaldHouse BC today, one of my favorite #MichaelGreenArchitecture projects. Built in 2013, it utilizes an innovative hybrid #CLT + #TJI structure, though looking at the building you'd never know it was #masstimberconstruction. The design concept is four interconnected houses, each serving roughly 18 families. Energy efficiency was also prioritized. No photography allowed inside, but beautiful images can be found on the #MGA website. Great tour this morning of the #BullittCenter in #Seattle by the #MillerHullPartnership, completed in 2013. This 6-story, 62,000 sf office building is the first commercial building to achieve Living Building certification. The building is net-positive in terms of energy and has composting toilets. The first two levels are concrete and the seismic bracing is steel. The load-bearing structure for floors 3-6 is FSC-certified #DouglasFir #glulam columns and beams. The floor slab is #NailLaminatedTimber, topped by plywood to provide the structural diaphragm. Concrete embedded with radiant heating and cooling tubes is on top of the plywood--the mass from the concrete also helps with acoustic performance. . . . . #travel4timber #hhfellowship #harthowertonfellowship (at Bullitt Center)

Back in North America! Met this morning with Craig Curtis, president of #Katerra, a new company seeking to close the productivity gap in the construction industry by optimizing every aspect of development, design, and construction. Katerra is also developing a catalog of #masstimber products for residential and commerical building projects, including #CLT and #glulam timber at both architectural and industrial appearance grades. . . . . #travel4timber #harthowertonfellowship #hhfellowship #architecture (at Seattle, Washington)

Followed up an incredibly informative meeting with #ETHZurich's Dr. Frangi with a #selfie at the #Arc_Tec_Lab, with its #sequentialroof. Dr. Frangi is a structural engineer and researcher, and his knowledge of timber in terms of both technology and the market seemingly knows no bounds. Among other things he helped develop the Swiss fire code. In part because of his efforts, #Switzerland is the only country worldwide to have no limit on timber's use as a building material in its fire code. #bigdeal . . . . #travel4timber #harthowertonfellowship #hhfellowship (at ETH Hönggerberg)
