Bridgerton Review: A Hopeless Pursuit
Tumblr media
"Bridgerton Review: A Comedy of Errors" By Maggie Fremont, a freelance writer specializing in TV and film.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Bridgerton, and particularly to Sarah L. Thompson for crafting this episode, for delivering an abundance of rom-com goodness. Nicola Coughlan continues to shine with her comedic talents (no surprises there, given her background in Derry Girls), while Luke Newton effortlessly embodies the swoon-worthy charm. And the anticipation building between Colin and Penelope is simply delicious.
Newton, in particular, shoulders a significant burden in this episode. While the TV adaptation of Colin and Penelope's storyline differs from the book version, injecting it with more urgency and introducing Colin as Penelope's mentor was a brilliant move. Despite the changes, iconic moments from the book are preserved, staying true to the essence of beloved scenes. Two such scenes, the cut hand and the kiss, offer crucial insights into Colin's character development and his growing realization about Penelope. While we can't delve into Colin's rapid-fire thoughts or his reluctance to discuss his feelings, Newton's portrayal conveys them perfectly, without veering into melodrama. Coughlan's adeptness in her role is undeniable, but Newton proves himself equally capable. Shall we dive into the details? Let's proceed, shall we?
The opening of Colin Bridgerton’s Charm School sets the tone immediately. When Colin and Penelope cross paths while promenading, their interaction is charged with both Penelope's endearing awkwardness and Colin's confident demeanor. Despite Penelope's self-deprecating remarks, Colin sees potential in her and remembers their initial meeting fondly. His decision to mentor her stems from genuine admiration, not pity. Their chemistry is palpable, even in moments of silence. And the subsequent discovery of Colin's journal adds another layer to their evolving dynamic, revealing vulnerabilities that draw them closer.
As the evening progresses, we witness Penelope's burgeoning confidence and Colin's growing fondness for her. However, their burgeoning relationship faces obstacles, including Eloise's inadvertent disclosure of Colin's assistance to Cressida, leading to unwanted attention and gossip. Despite the setbacks, their genuine connection shines through, culminating in a tender moment at the garden gate.
Penelope's vulnerability and Colin's empathy are on full display as she expresses her doubts and desires. Their kiss, while initially portrayed as inconsequential, holds deeper significance, particularly for Colin, whose expression betrays his true feelings. As Penelope flees, Colin's realization dawns, signaling a turning point in their relationship.
In conclusion, while Penelope may consider herself a lost cause, it's Colin who finds himself adrift, struggling to deny his growing affection for his best friend. The audience bears witness to his awakening, as he finally sees Penelope for who she truly is—a remarkable woman worthy of love. Bravo to Bridgerton for delivering yet another captivating episode filled with humor, heart, and the promise of romance. See More....
