use firefox instead of chrome or opera (both are made with chromium, which blocks functionality for ad-blockers. firefox isn't based on chromium).

use libreoffice instead of microsoft office suite

use vetted sites on r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH for free movies, books, games, etc.

use trakt or letterboxd instead of imdb.

use storygraph instead of goodreads.

use darkpatterns to find mobile game with no ads or microtransactions

use ground news to read unbiased news and find blind spots in news stories.

use mediahuman or cobalt to download music, or support your favorite artists directly through bandcamp

make youtube bearable by using mtube, newpipe, or the unhook extension on chrome, firefox, or microsoft edge

use search for a cause or ecosia to support the environment instead of google

use thriftbooks to buy new or used books (they also have manga, textbooks, home goods, CDs, DVDs, and blurays)

use flashpoint to play archived online flash games

find books, movies, games, etc. on the internet archive! for starters, here's a bunch of David Attenborough documentaries and all of the Animorphs books

burn your music onto cds

use pdf24 (available online or as a desktop app) instead of adobe

use unroll.me to clean your email inboxes

use thunderbird, mailfence, countermail, edison mail, tuta, or proton mail instead of gmail

remove bloatware on windows PC, macOS, and iOS X

remove bloatware on samsung X

use pixelfed instead of instagram or meta

use NCH suite for free software like a file converter, image editor, video editors, pdf editor, etc.

Lucky or Good?

Is it better to be lucky or good?

A question will a million answers, to be sure. But something I've learned at Belegarth is that my answer is unique.

For me, the question is admittedly different: Would I rather win through luck, or lose despite my skill?

My answer remains that I would always rather loose knowing that I am skilled and did my best, than triumph through luck. I don't want false credit, nor do I want to feel as though I've not earned my accolades.

I hate feeling that my actions don't have weight, that anyone blessed by "fate" or "luck" could achieve precisely what I just did.

I want to be the master of my own fate. I don't want my triumphs handed to god, while my failures always fall to me. I don't want glory at the cost of my soul, nor will I beg for attention for the smallest, petty win.

I will be strong enough, or I will work to improve.

What you would have done in Nazi Germany is what you're doing now.

And it's okay if that's nothing. It's okay if all you're doing is keeping yourself safe. It's okay if you're not able to actively resist the ruling class.

But the least you could do is simply refrain from helping the ruling class. Stop sharing posts that encourage people to honor and respect the police. Stop demonizing riots. Stop allowing hateful people to feel welcome around you. Stop holding the people fighting back against the ruling class to higher standards than the ruling class.

If the only thing you're able to do is nothing, make sure you're actually doing nothing.

I love it when trans women protest topless. If they're arrested, the state must admit they're women. If they aren't, it shows the glaring contradictions of labeling trans women as legally male. It helps their cause either way.

Donald Trump is NOT our king — and on June 14th, it's up to us to prove it. Trump is throwing himself a $45 million dollar birthday party — a big military parade like some of his authoritarian idols have done. The White House says the parade is to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States Army, which just happens to fall on the same day as Trump’s birthday. Rubbish. Trump wants a big military parade on his birthday and is using the anniversary as a pretext. How ironic that the Continental Congress originally established an Army, headed by George Washington, to fight against the very tyranny that Trump espouses. Trump is acting like a king by defying the courts, issuing arbitrary decrees, disregarding checks and balances. On June 14th people all over America will gather peacefully to protest Donald Trump’s authoritarian spectacle. You can find out more at www.nokings.org. Find a gathering near you. Get involved. Stand up for democracy. Donald Trump wants a military parade so he can feel powerful. But you know something? In America, we don’t have kings.
