Absolutely one of my favorite scenes in the movie

The amount of narrative heavy lifting being done by the 20-second scene of Paul taking off the Atreides ducal signet ring. Because this is his moral high point in the movie. This is as close as he comes to getting it.

He's just experienced this entirely different set of social relations where he's valued not because of his name or bloodline or connection to a prophecy but for his contribution to a shared political struggle. And he's just fought and won a battle against the Harkonnens in this environment.

He's already been accepted by the fedaykin--not as a duke or a messiah but as their brother-in-arms and an equal. He knows there's a place there for him if he wants it, and he's deciding that yeah, actually, turning his back on all his inherited power and privilege for this way of life is what he wants to do. Taking the ring off is the last step of his allegiance shifting from colonizer to colonized.

"Father, I found my way" being such a great callback to that scene in Part One, where Leto says whether or not you're the future of House Atreides, you'll always be my son. The self-awareness of Dad, if I'm going to be the kind of person you wanted me to be then I can't be a ruler. And Paul's right. He is right about himself in that moment.

It's such a simple, understated scene. He's alone, sitting on the dune at sunrise. This isn't a performance for anyone. (Contrast that to when he puts the ring back on, as part of a demonstration of power in front of thousands.) It's just a quiet moment of self-reflection and clarity of purpose. Ah. This is exactly where I'm supposed to be.

And it also immediately sets up the tension that runs through the second act of the movie. Because we know, as soon as he takes that ring off, that this is one half of a setup and payoff. We know there's gonna be a scene where he puts it back on. And that will be the moment when he's committed to doing and being the exact opposite of all this.

Things that make me hopeful about the future of humankind: my little brother being a huge fan of movie Chani and yelling that anyone who disagrees with her not having any of Paul’s bullshit should stick to the books

Seriously, Denis made the intensity and conflict of Paul’s and Chani’s relationship so interesting and deeply tragic. And symbolic, Chani became manifestation of Paul’s rejection of his initial desire to be equal to the Fremen. Chani walked away a free woman instead of staying as a concubine. A great show of strength and dignity, both as a person and as the embodiment of the Fremens’ spirit

So I finally saw Dune: Part II today, and oh boy. First of all, Feyd fanart incoming, that black and white scene has me in a chokehold

Second of all, it was absolutely soul crushing to watch Paul go down a very predictable, but still horrifying path. Chalamet did a spectacular job portraying him. The power, the authority, the charisma. I caught myself getting hyped up for battle just by hearing his speech. And that’s the terror of it. He’s more than a leader, he’s an idol. The audacity of Paul to look the Fremen in the eyes and announce himself as the Duke of Arrakis… the despair of it all. And the thing is, Paul is that much harder to denounce if you know him and what he’s been through. The same eugenicist tyrannical regime he aims to lead destroyed his life and robbed him of his freedom. He lost his father, his House, his lover and himself. By the standards of our society, he’s still a kid. And he saw so much violence, went through so much pain. I can empathize with him, and that makes him more dangerous

Funny how fascism works. The oppressed are subjected to immeasurable suffering while the oppressors are rotting alive, living a hollow life void of dignity and peace, and for what? Look at the Harkonnens, no man who knows what love feels like will ever envy their lives. No trust, no security, no affection. Nightmarish, hellish existence. The grandeur of power is nothing to the joy of closeness to another human being.

I feel for Chani, it hurt to lose Paul. The movie did a really cool thing with showing the corrupting nature of excess power. Before drinking the Water of Life, Paul was terrified of the future, of the war. He refused to lead the Fremen to the hellfire. But he buckled, he gave in, and once he had the power in his hands he could not resist using it. I believe that at some point Paul genuinely wanted to be one of the Fremen, not their messiah but their equal. But he made his decision, and now we will watch the world burn

They are already selling data to midjourney, and it's very likely your work is already being used to train their models because you have to OPT OUT of this, not opt in. Very scummy of them to roll this out unannounced.

Hey @staff that’s good and all, but why is it our job to opt out of our work getting stolen? I have never given consent for AI training, and I’m learning about your Midjourney partnership from other users long after you’ve decided to sell us to a predatory company

Why is this feature opt out and not opt in? There are people on a break from social media, people who have deactivated accounts, people who are dead

They have no way of protecting themselves from Midjourney. No way to opt out. Are y’all seriously engaging in grave robberies here? If no person voluntarily signs up for AI training then tough shit find better partners

And may I remind you, I may be a broke nobody from nowhere, but we have some prominent artists here who have loud voices and strong opinions on having their shit stolen

At least make it an opt in feature, we should not be sold out to AI ghouls by default
