#third-party sharing

Hi, Tumblr. It’s Tumblr. We’re working on some things that we want to share with you.
AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.
Here are the important details:
We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner.
We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc.
Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
If you have concerns, please read through the Help Center doc linked above and contact us via Support if you still have questions.

From instructions on how to opt out, look at the official staff post on the topic. It also gives more information on Tumblr's new policies. If you are opting out, remember to opt out each separate blog individually.
Please reblog this post, so it will get more votes!

Since I had to turn this on individually for all my sideblogs, I'm going to post about it on all my sideblogs.
Tumblr is going to be selling data to train AIs. If you don't want your posts used for that purpose, follow these steps:
1, Go into your blog settings. This is separate from your main settings, you have to go through an individual blog.
2, Scroll down to the "Visibility" section. This is near the bottom of your blog settings.
3, Find the toggle that says "Prevent third-party sharing for *blog name*" and turn it on.
4, Repeat for every sideblog you have. You will have to individually turn it on for all of your sideblogs, whether you have two or twenty.

Hello, tumblr users! Yesterday I saw this post on Twitter and I completely agree with the op. We've done this song and dance before.
If we all were to, hypothetically, create opt-in blogs, we have an opportunity to do something VERY FUNNY.
If we were, let's say, post large quantities of definitelly NOT Nightshaded images. I've heard that feeding AI generated images back into the machine does absolutely no harm to the AI. ;)
Or we could all become hyperfixated on posting Disney art and scripts, I'm sure the big mouse's legal team will love to have genAI be trained on their IPs.
As for language models, I'm not so knowledgeable, but we could start making posts that absolutely make complete sense, do not spread blatant misinformation and are not plain gibberish.
Problem being: a significant amount of all posts on the platform will need to be 100% normal definitely non-sabotage posts and it's not clear to me how and when the sale of this information will take place. I, like a lot of people, am assuming that the first round of data was already been sold with no announcement made and it's not clear to me if any subsequent sales will be made (although I'm assuming so).

Hey, it's been a minute
Life's been busy, of course, but that's not really the reason I haven't been posting here. In case you missed it, staff have at this point confirmed that they'll be selling user data to Midjourney for use in generative ai training datasets. While I have opted out of third-party data sharing in my blog settings (and you should do that too if you haven't!!), I'm still not terribly satisfied with this platform's handling of the situation.
Tumblr has, over the last year especially, demonstrated a complete lack of care or respect for the human beings that use their site. In this light, I do not expect them to follow through on this new venture with any regard for ethics or artists. If they cannot manage to moderate poc or trans women's blogs with the respect and gravity folks deserve on such a fundamental level, I cannot imagine the pattern will suddenly shift to value any one of us over marketability and profit.
I'm considering this development the final nail in a coffin that's been pretty much built for a while now.
My art on this blog will remain up, as an archive, because I consider the damage to be done. I will not be posting additional work here in the future. My sideblog might remain active to some extent (In case staff invents more hidden switches to flip without telling anyone), but I'm disinterested in my intellectual property being farmed for content generators without my consent (which I have not given) and appropriate compensation (which I have not received).
If you like my stuff, and want to see more, I'll be over on cohost pretty much exclusively, so feel free to come say hi. There's hot new art over there that neither you, nor Midjourney, have seen from me yet.
If this is where we part ways, thank you for all the kind words, rbs, and likes over the years. tumblr was my first experiment with posting my art publicly, and while it truly sucks for things to end this way, I'm happy for the time I've spent on here, and the friends I've made along the way.

Hi everyhorsey, I'm turning off reblogs temporarily (and potentially permanently) for every post except this one and this other one.
I really didn't want to have to, but I treasure my art, and Tumblr's recent decision to automatically opt blogs into AI crawling scares me. I have opted out on my blog, but I can't guarantee that other people will opt out on their blogs before reblogging. I also will not be posting after this, at least until something changes.
Tumblr @staff, you NEED to make this an opt-in feature, not opt-out. As another user pointed out, opting people in by default is very likely a GDPR violation.
Similar things have happened on other websites. For example, DeviantArt opted its users into AI crawling automatically, and they got in serious hot water with their userbase.
Eventually, they switched to opting users out automatically, but the damage was done. Countless users had their artwork scraped for AI generation, and this was a violation of trust that broke the camel's back for many users... Including me.
You cannot abuse your userbase like this and expect that there will be no consequences. You cannot say one thing and do another. I'll give you a month, and if nothing changes, I'll pack my bags and leave.

Apparently, if you opt out right now, chances are high that tumblr won't sell your info, but if you decide to do so later, you have to trust big AI companies to honour your request, there isn't a guarantee or regulation for it in place

Tumblr AI Update
I'm seeing a lot of knee-jerk reactions and it's making me worry, so I'm going to try and help.
Here's the announcement post by tumblr staff.
Under settings -> visibility, on desktop or mobile on mobile hitting the gear and going down to Visibility, you can change your settings to Opt Out of allowing third-party AI scrappers. (you want it to be blue).
If you can't see these options you may need to update your app or refresh your browser. I've done it on both, so it is available on mobile and desktop.
Per the update from tumblr, they already take steps to mitigate AI scraping from people they are NOT associated with. The Opt Out option is specifically for those companies they are, or are going to, partner with.
You need to change this setting on ALL your sideblogs too.
Do it if you have art, or fics or anything really. It's just best to opt out.
You can leave to another platform if you want, I just don't want to see people go because they're angry or misunderstanding what's happening.

Did you prevent third-party sharing on all your blogs?
To prevent your posts being used for AI training, go into your blog settings and turn on the toggle that says "Prevent third-party sharing for *blog name*"
Make sure to turn it on at all of your sideblogs!

Tumblr has a "Prevent third-party sharing" option now. To follow GPDR, this should have been on by default but isn't. To turn it on, go to each of your blog's settings (you must do this for each individual blog and it isn't in the general settings), go to the "Visibility" section, find "Prevent third-party sharing", turn it on and save. Let's do what we can to protect our work from AI.
