Voltron Season 7 (without spoilers)

Alright, I don’t do this shit very often, friends and some followers know this. It’s not often that I come on Tumblr and go all Dad Mode™, but it’s around that time again.

Now, today I’m not here to drop some hopes and dreams for future generations, I’m here to explain why you’re wrong and here’s why... but in the nicest way possible.

Voltron Legendary Defender season 7 was a roller coaster. The hype was insane. The promises that were made: astonishing. However, there were a lot of problems. But my main focus here is that it is not the VLD cast and crew’s fault. Nor is it Dreamworks (well sort of of, but I’ll cover that. Need not fret my pet). 

Dare I start with this “queer baiting?”

We were NOT queer baited.

Yes, we were promised that we would get more Shiro and Adam interaction this season, but unfortunately, Dreamworks had to law the “law” and not give the go ahead. This is honestly totally understandable. It’s a big step in the show biz industry for LGBT+ rep. However, just because we weren’t given this all holy Adashi goodness doesn’t mean we were queer baited. It is still cannon that they were in a relationship, it is still cannon that Shiro is a gay man, it is still cannon that Shiro and Adam were more than just close buddies. Just because this was not explicitly depicted in season 7 does not make it any less true! It baffles me how terrible some “fans” can be about this. What do you want? Them to fuck on screen? Remember this is a show directed at young children! Not only that, but kids don’t tend to want romantic plot lines...nor do they even care about plot lines. They want to see the cool explosions, and the robotic lions. They want to see the heroes and teamwork! I watch the show on occasion with my 10 year old cousins and they never stop talking about how awesome the fight scenes are. Or even my 6 year old niece will talk about how much she loves the friendships, and finds it hilarious when Keith and Lance bicker! 

This leads me into my next topic...

Voltron is for Families

We have to keep in mind that this is a kids show. Yes, it does cover heavy themes, and yes, it hits close to home for a lot of older viewers, but there’s a very good reason! 

Did you know that most kids shows are written and designed so that both kids and their parents can enjoy it together? I’m sure you all have seen those videos that point out all the sexual innuendos in Disney movies, or more mature humor in kids television, but that’s because it’s a way for kids and parents to bond! 

I remember when I was in my earlier years of childhood me and my father would watch Phineas and Ferb for hours on end because we both found it amusing! While I enjoyed the jokes and the wild antics of the two brothers and they’re older sister Candace, my father loved the dynamic of Dr. Doofenshmirtz and his family because it was the closest to ours with my parents divorced and my not-so-frequent visits to my dad’s house while I primarily lived with my mother. See what I mean?

If you genuinely took the time to read this, I thank you from deep down in my soul (if i had one lol). I love this show, I really do. I hope that as it comes to an end the fandom’s issues will resolve and come to love what is cannon and set in stone. Enjoy the characters and the plot for what it is, and stop spreading hate and violence. I love many people in this fandom, but a lot of it is toxic. I just wish that one day in the future we will all be happy with what has happened in the show.

Dad mode activated.

I’m gonna go all dad mode for a second. I really want the generation after mine and so forth to have it a lot easier and live in a world where being yourself is normalized and not slandered. Being gay, bi, pan, etc. needs to be broadcasted as something beautiful and marital instead of a joke or fetishized. It makes LGBT+ youth uncomfortable in their own skin and like an outcast when nobody see’s it let alone wants to see it. I just really hope that what Voltron is doing, along with their widespread fan base, will set off a chain reaction in the animation industry. Especially those shows that are directed towards children. Because what that will do is set it in these generations minds that it’s okay to be you and love who you love, ergo bringing it into adult shows as they age and it’s a normal thing that everyone is familiarized with because they grew up seeing it as this normal, beautiful, amazing thing. That’s the world I wish I was able to grow up in, but I didn’t. So I hope someone does

Those who aren’t able to go to SDCC, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do. Use the same weapon these nasty people are abusing- social media. Please send her- and everyone in the VLD team!- lots of nice comments and what you love about their work.

I find people are extra supportive only of staff and cast active in social media, but please don’t be discouraged to send your love to those who aren’t. Again, just because they don’t give your posts attention with likes and reblogs, it does not mean they’re not reading it.

Also, please send Trevor Devall, Ana Gasteyer and Steven Yeun lots of love for their awesome performance as Keith’s dad, Krolia and Keith every season!! 🔥🗡🐺
