thunderbolts fandom only existing for like... four days and already having so much absurd and annoying shipping discourse is just another side-effect of this enshittification of fandom that's been happening since *check notes* voltron and the pandemic imo.
but one of the most annoying recent fandom trends is forcing characters into this nuclear family dynamic and the way it's made shipping discourse unbearable. "alexei's the dad, bob yelena and ava are the big siblings and bob is the little brother," on paper, is a harmless headcanon. the problem is the weaponization of these family headcanons to fuel ship wars.
bob and yelena have a deep bond in thunderbolts. you can interpret it as a sibling dynamic. you can also interpret it as romantic or queerplatonic or literally whatever you want. the problem is the same people who call bob yelena's "little brother" are simultaneously saying that any romantic interpretation of their characters is "incestuous weirdo behavior."
like, can we not?
and while boblena is the ship that's taking the most heat right now, i've been seeing hostility towards any variation of any thunderbolts ships. john/ava, john/bob, bucky/alexei, bob/void (which, lmfao, is SUCH a typical ship to me that people getting up in arms about it just proves we've let too many normies into fandom spaces). even yelena/kate is catching strays right now. and it doesn't have to be this way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
again, can we not? just say you're not into any of the ships and move on with your life.
these are not siblings. these are grown adults who grew to care about each other after experiencing traumatic events. "found family" trope has gotten so out of control it genuinely makes fandom less fun.

Y'all
Imagine if Bilbo lost his lil acorn once Smaug was dead.
Throin sees Bilbo looking around all panicked, digging through some pile of gold or gems, and asks about it, and this is where he learns about the acorn.
So of course he offers to help look, while they're looking for the Arkenstone, and eventually they've got the whole company looking for both. Thorin's head seems a little more clear suddenly, so everyone's more looking for the acorn than the arkenstone, because yeah they're looking for the arkenstone, but they'll know it when they see it, they have to CONCENTRAIT to find a lil acorn, and it's important they find IT soon or it'll get crushed, or die or rot. The arkenstone has lasted this long. It'll last a little longer.
And because they've all got he mindset if "yeah thats a bit of gold, but it's not an acorn. Sure sure some pretty gems but it's not an acorn!" In there heads, they stave of the gold sickness.
When Fili shouts, "I found it!" They're all rather disappointing when they realise he means the Arkestone. Thorin pockets it, but they return to their search for the acorn right away.
Then, one day, Thranduil shows up demanding the white gems and Thorin's standing up on the barracks like "Sure, if we come across them."
And Thranduil's like "what do you mean if you come across them?"
"There was a dragon in the mountain for over a century! He wasn't exactly cleaning and we're a bit preoccupied with our own search at the moment! I'll send them your way once we find them! If takes a day or a year, you'll live!" And then he disappears from Thranduil's sight.
Only to reappear after a moment, looking slightly irritated. The hobbit is by his side looking, perhaps hopeful? With a roll of his eyes, Thorin says, bitting out the words like they physically hurt to say "If you would like, perhaps you could send a select few of your most trusted guard, and if they might help us in our search, they can also look for your gems as well?"
Thranduil has never been more caught of guard in his life. Did a dwarf, one whom he'd had imprissoned in his dungeon less than a month ago, just invite his people into his most recently reclaimed treasurey?
"I'm sorry. What?" He blinks up at the dwarf- most elegantly, he assures you.
"Elves have very keen eyes, do you not?" Asks the little hobbit. "We're looking for my acorn, you see, that I got from Beorn the skin changer, I seem to have lost it in the dragon's chase, and we fear it'll be crushed. Throin says your box would likely be in the front of the treasurey, and we haven't searched there yet, though Smaug did follow us through there, so it's a fine place for your people to start. It would be greetly appreciated."
And really. The argument could go on, Thranduil's really not sure he believes there IS an acorn, but if it gets him those damned white gems, fine. He sends Tauriel and her guard, and Legolas volunteers himself.
When Bard shows up asking for aid for the town Thorin throws his hands up. "Your just as bad as the elves! We just got our montain back! Fah! At least you asked for nothing so specific!" And practically chucks a chest full of randomly scooped up gold and gems over at the man. "But if there is an acorn in there, you are to return it immediately!"
There isn't an acorn.
"Why would there be an acorn?" He asks Thranduil that evening as he takes tea with the Elven king who's made camp outside the Lonely Mountain as a statement to the dwarven king he doesn't mean to leave without what's rightfully his, regardless of their compliance.
"His husband appears to be rather attached to it." Thranduil shrugs. "I don't pretent to understand the ways of haflings, but if the hobbit has half so strong a love for that which grows from the earth, as the dwarves do that which is mined from it, and I was a king who'd dragged my consort half way across Middle Earth to risk his life battling a dragon for its hoard, I'd think it wise to have the Mountain turned upside down for one measly acorn as well."
Dain shows up and is about ready to storm the peacefully-aiding-the-humans-at-this-point-because-we're-here-what-else-do-we-have-to-do elves on principle, but Thorin puts a stop to it quick.
It takes Dain a day and a half to realised that Thorin did infact say "they were all looking for an Acorn," yesterday, and several minutes to understand that he was saying "no, we found the Arkenstone days ago," today.
And of course, the orcs and goblins show up and are defeated by the forced of them all, united under Acorn Peace Treaty of 2942
Sadly, weeks go by, and they do not find the acorn. They do eventually find the Gems, and Legolas and the majority of the elves return to Mirkwood, Legolas having made good friends with the Company, especially Gloin (this is a suprise tool that will help him later) but Tauriel remains, and if Thorin wasn't smitten with the hobbit, he might comment on just how close Kili is growing to her. At least she's respectful. Might just teach that boy a think or two. The opposite is, of course, true, and Tauriel becomes just as much a menace as the princes.
As the weeks go by and proper cataloging of the treasury commences, every dwarf who comes to help is shows a picture of the acorn every single morning, and promised a just reward for its discovery.
Eventually, Bilbo has to concede they aren't going to find it, but, well, by then he's not exactly planning to return to the Shire for long enough to care for a sprouting tree.
He does return long enough to stop all his things being auctioned off, no he's not a ghost, thank you very much, and have Bag End transfered to his cousin Drogo and his wife, before setting back out for Erebor with the things he intends to keep.
It's years before anyone thinks of the poor lost little acorn again, decades, infact.
One day, in the early morning of the 21st Durin's day after the reclaiming of Erebor, a dwarf comes rushing from the treasurey to find the Royals preparing for the celebration.
"Is it one of these, your highne- uh, Bilbo, your lost acorn?" He asks, stuttering over the title he knows the hobbit dislikes. "I can't really.... tell them apart."
And Bilbo just blinks, because in the cupped palms of the dwarf's are perhaps 15 or 20 little acorns...
"Where did you find these?" He asks.
"They were in the back."
"The back?" Thorin repeats, then catches himself and shoos the dwarf back the way he came "Show us."
They all- Bilbo and Thorin, the princeses, and a handful of the company who'd been present- follow the dwarf down into the treasurey, and then through the treasurey, past all the neat piles of gold and the many chests of organized gems and stones and all manner of other treasures, until they're presented with a very familiar back door.
Or rather, a hidden passage, tucked away in an alcove, where another handful of acorns' the few the Dwarf who'd brought them the first had likely missed- are scattered about.
"You did... just have the one, right Uncle Bilbo?" Fili asks.
"Or course I just had the one!" Bilbo retorts. "I couldn't have possibly carried that many with me all the way from Beorn's!"
With a resigned sort of sigh, as he begins to piece together the answer to a decades old mystery, Thorin steps forward and follows the tunnel up, up, up, and out of Erebor, the others- save the dwarf who brought them, dismissed by Bilbo with a smile, a thanks, and an oh, no, you may keep those- right behind.
As they walk, the acorns start to increase. Though there's never so many as to begin piling up in the tunnel, by the time they reach the end, the majority of the ground is covered in a solid layer if the little things, and the crunch underfoot as they all emerge onto the ledge which they had all once stood, with batted breath in the moon light as they realised they were at last, truly home.
"Was that here last time?" Kili asked, studying the impressive Oaktree shading the entire ledge that sat in front of the secret entrance to Erebor.
The trunk of the tree was wide and solid, sitting right up against the mountain side, and rather winning the battle of wills against the carved stone architecture of the dwarves. Its limbs grow twisted and wild, up and out in all directions. It's easily 250 or 300 feet tall. There is all sorts of life flittering about in its florishing branches, all covered in brilliant green leaves, and fresh green little acorns.
The growned all around them is covered in acorns as well, so many more than the tunnel.
"No." Thorin says, watching a squirrel dash down from the trunk of the tree, shove several acorns into its cheeks, and dash back up the trunk. "No it was not." He turns to Bilbo, and raises an eyebrow. "Lost it after the dragons chase, you said?"
Beet red and look quite flustered, all Bilbo can manage out is a squicky little "oops."
"'Oops' indeed." Thorin returns, smiling fondly.

The ultimate guide to AOS James T. Kirk 'angst' in the 2009 movie - An in depth analysis
Sit down and buckle up guys because I decided to unleash my full AOS angst headcanons and theories here.
Also please note I was extremely inspired by and relied on this amazing post: exhuastedpigeons analysis on why tarsus IV happened for this entire thread, so most of this thread is based on the assumation that Tarsus IV happened.
Firstly I'm going to skip the whole George Kirk dying scene in Star trek 2009, I mean there's not much to analyse there other than the fact that his father's death is the root of all Jim's angst.
Tumblr media
In this deleted scene we see Sam Kirk (Jim's Brother) leaving the house and being chased after by Frank. It's still uncertain whether Frank is their 'Uncle' or 'Stepfather' (whatever headcanon you prefer ig)
This is where our AOS Jim differs. TOS Jim had a much different upbringing simply because his father never died.
Frank is clearly verbally abusive (possible physically behind the scenes) and Sam has had enough, he's leaving. Here's where we learn some interesting facts.
Frank: (to Jim) "What you want doesn't matter, you're no-one and I asked you to wash the car."
Frank has instilled in Jim that he's nothing. Nothing he says or does matters. He just sees Jim as an obedient slave labourer for him to abuse.
Sam: (to Jim) “You’re gonna be okay, you always are. Always do everything right; good grades, obeying every stupid order. I can't be a kirk in this house. Show me how to do that and I'll stay.”
From this we learn that Jim has been somewhat of a people pleaser, maybe that's just his way of dealing with the abuse? He doesn't misbehave, he's always seeking approval.
However these words from Sam seem to be the catalyst for him to change. He's a kirk and he wants to prove it. With their mother up in space and Sam planning to abandon him, he has to do something.
We briefly see him cleaning the car like Frank told him to, only for him to find the keys and he decides to steal the corvette.
Tumblr media
It's often been debated whether this was a suicidal stunt or not, either:
A. He felt like he was going to lose everything and this was his 'way out' or B. He was trying to prove something to Sam. (perhaps even both??)
He's driving fast, passing by Sam and even ignoring the police robot who starts chasing him. He's on a misson and seems to know EXACTLY where he is going. The cliff.
He jumps out last minute (change of mind?) while the corvette drives over the edge of the cliff.
Tumblr media
Maybe the car represents control over 'kirk'. It was his father's car and Jim steals it back and takes it away from Frank (aka Frank's control over him as well)
This moment is clearly shown as some kind of 'turning point' in Jim's life. I also think this is the moment where Jim gets sent to Tarsus IV in the AOS films. (and where his abandonement issues start)
“John Harrison’s bio in ST:ITD claimed he was one of nine survivors of a attack on the (Tarsus) planet in the year 2246, his parents Richard and Sara perishing." (x)
The most important thing here is the year. 2246. Jim was born in 2233 which would make him 13 years old at the time of tarsus IV happening in the AOS verse. He seems to be roughly around that age in these scenes. I can only presume that shortly after this incident that Frank ships him off to Tarsus IV.
Tumblr media
The next scene we see is Jim in a bar, in Iowa. The year is now 2255 (x) This means it's been 9 years since Tarsus IV supposedly occured and Jim is now 22 years old.
It's clear here that Jim is different. He has a facade of confidence and arrogance, he's clearly hurting under the surface.
Tumblr media
The people at the bar assume he's just some 'dumb hick' and Jim uses this almost as a kind of self-defense mechanism. He dumbs himself down around other people and I feel like this plays into his previous approval-seeking behavior and fear of abandonement (No one has ever liked the real him afterall?)
Obviously we know this perceived image of him his wrong. Jim knows what xenolinguistics are when talking with Uhura and later after the bar fight Pike says this:
Pike: "Cause I looked up your file while you were drooling on the floor. Your aptitude tests are off the charts, so what is it? You like being the only genius level repeat offender in the Midwest?" Jim: "Maybe I love it."
Tumblr media
Going back to the actual bar-fight. I personally feel like Jim starts this fight because he's full of some kind of overwhelming emptiness (I mean if he survived tarsus IV and then just ends up back in Iowa, he's got to be feeling some kind of way about that) I think he seeks out this fight because he wants to FEEL something, anything.
Note: someone in the notes here said he gets into fights for the adrenaline/dopamine and I agree with that as well, definitely ties back into needing to "feel" something.
ANOTHER thing to note is that Jim does not care about getting hurt or his own well-being, the pattern starts here with the bar-fight.
Also if we presume tarsus IV happened that is most likely where he learned how to fight ~and~ it would be adding onto his abandonment issues. Everyone he has ever cared about so far has either: left him or died.
Tumblr media
Pike dares Jim to do better (aka join starfleet) Jim accepts this dare, but why? I think in this moment Jim had another 'change'. He doesn't want to be just some 'dumb hick' getting into bar fights anymore, he wants to prove everyone wrong and maybe even a part of him wants to live up to the 'kirk' name.
The next scene is the following day, with Jim heading to the shipyard to enlist into starfleet. He stops and we see the Enterprise still under construction. AGAIN this feels like a massive metaphor right here. Jim is witnessing the birth of the Enterprise (which in turn, ends up being the birth of his new life)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also when Jim meets Bones (Leonard H. McCoy) who is honestly such an integral part in the development of Jim's character, but we'll talk about that later.
Tumblr media
We are then shown a time-skip to Jim and Bones at starfleet academy.
Jim: "I'm taking the test again." Bones: "You've got to be kidding" Jim: "Yeah, tomorrow morning and I want you there." Bones: "You know I've got better things to do than watch you embarrass yourself for a third time."
Here we learn that Jim is taking the kobayshi maru test for, apparently, the third time. Failing is not an option to Jim, aka he hates 'no-win scenarios' I imagine this comes from tarsus IV where failure means death. He's a survivor and he doesn't know how to deal with losing.
It then skips to him in bed with Gaila, which we later learn is because he was using her to be able to beat the kobayshi maru. When she says:
Gaila: "Jim, I think I love you" Jim: "That is so weird"
He brushes her off, he's unable to say it back. I think he's afraid of getting to close to someone in that kind of way, because everyone he has ever cared about has left him eventually. It's hard to tell here if he was really being so callous as to use her for his own gain or if he did care somewhat about her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are interrupted by Uhura before Jim can give an answer and he's thrown out of the room. We then see him retaking the kobayshi-maru test. It's important to note here that he's still using a facade.
Tumblr media
He's still acting arrogant and cocky, he's not allowing anyone to see the version of him that is afraid of failure. He's simply gone from dumb/arrogant to smart/arrogant. He changed the coding of the test so that he could win, which gives him the illusion that there is always a choice.
Then Spock comes along and challenges him.
Spock: "You of all people should know, cadet kirk, a captain cannot cheat death."
Tumblr media
Spock argues that Jim has failed to see the purpose of the kobayshi-maru and that he needs to accept fear in the face of certain death. (basically that death in not something you can just reprogram or cheat your way out of)
It's most likely, however, that Jim does not care about this. If he was on tarsus IV then he has already accepted fear and death, he literally just believes that he can work his way out of any scenario simply by being 'the best' and oh boy, does he seem to think he's the best or he's merely acting that way to avoid conforting the part of himself that is afraid of failing.
Before Jim can continue arguing with Spock they are interrupted by a distress call from Vulcan.
Bones comes over and gives him a pat on the back, clearly a sign of support, though makes a remark that he 'likes' Spock after Jim calls him a bastard (Obviously a joke, but he's probably also glad that someone is trying to speak some sense into Jim, as it seems he rarely listens to Bones)
The cadets are sent to the hangar, where we find out that Jim has not be assigned to a ship due to being on academic suspension. He's going to have to say farewell to Bones.
Look how he reacts here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He knows it's coming, Bones is going to leave him just like everyone else. We see when he turns around to face Bones that he's trying his best to act like it doesn't bother him with a fake smile on his face. Of course the best part here is that Bones doesn't actually leave him, he comes back for him.
Bones gives him a vaccine and drags him onto the shuttle. Important to note here:
Tumblr media
When Jim is alone with Bones, there is a level of vulnerability and authenticity in their friendship, Jim doesn't feel the need to maintain a facade of invincibility. (aka Jim shows he is in pain infront of Bones!)
I feel like this is such an important insight into their friendship, clearly Jim trusts Bones and I really wish we could have seen how exactly they got so close.
Tumblr media
In contrast when they are confronted by the officer, Jim is trying his damn hardest to act normal.
Tumblr media
Then when they are on the shuttle he tells Bones he 'might throw up on him' and while this is a funny throw-back to their first meeting, to me it's just another confirmation that he has a lot of trust in Bones. He's able to tell him when he doesn't feel well (and may or may not be needing his help)
Once they are on the Enterprise we see Jim make an 'attempt' at one of the passing nurses. Again I can only put this down to him trying to put up some kind of mask that he is 'fine', because in this moment he is actually incredibly vunerable. He's clearly in pain/feeling sick and being dragged through sickbay, yet he's still trying to maintain his 'playboy' status to distract from this.
Tumblr media
Again showing pain infront of Bones :) We also later learn that he's having an allergic reaction to the vaccine, so his symptoms might actually be worse than previously thought. and he's been trying to downplay them this whole time (yet complaining freely to Bones)
In the next scene we see again the fact that Jim has been hiding his intelligence. After hearing chekov's broadcast he rushes to the bridge to warn them of the upcoming attack.
Tumblr media
Jim: "That same anomaly, a lightning storm in space that we saw today, also occurred on the day of my birth. Before a Romulan ship attacked the USS Kelvin." Jim: (to pike) "You know that sir, I read your dissertation"
Clearly he isn't stupid, even Pike hadn't connected the dots. (Plus he was smart enough to be able to reprogram the kobayshi maru, which was literally designed by Spock, who is supposedly their most prized graduate)
Tumblr media
Skipping ahead to the next scene. Jim wrecklessly attempts to rescue Sulu with no thought at all for his own life. They were literally only seconds away from dying but are saved at the last moment by Chekov. Most likely, after tarsus IV, Jim can't stand to see another person die infront of him. Not when he has the chance to at least try.
An alternative theory would be that he's just actively suicidal at this point, I mean he's on academic suspension and his life has been a shit-show so far. Maybe he thinks if he can save at least one person, that his life would at least mean something.
Tumblr media
After this we see Spock lose his Mother and Captain Pike is kidnapped by Nero. Jim ends up in an argument with Spock because he believes that he knows best how to take on Nero (perhaps the situation hits too close to home considering Nero killed his father)
Jim: "Every second we waste, Nero's getting closer to his next target." Spock: "That is correct, and why I'm instructing you to accept the fact that I alone am in command" Jim: "I will not allow us to go backwards!" Bones: "Jim, he's the Captain!"
Bones does this best to try and calm Jim down, but Jim is acting particularly headstrong in this scene and he's very against listening to Spock who is now acting captain (issues with authority?) Spock ends up marooning him onto the planet Delta vega.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just for fun, I will throw in that he probably got at least some trauma from waking up marooned on a planet, which then led to him being attacked by TWO massive alien monsters.
Also he's most likely still recovering from an allergic reaction, almost died saving Sulu and got knocked out with a vulcan nerve pinch?? He is not having a good day that's for sure. You also can't tell me he didn't get frostbite on his hands climbing out of that ice hole either??
Now for the interesting part: Meeting Prime Spock
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see that Jim has an extremely strong emotional reaction to the mind meld with Prime Spock and it can be argued that this isn't just because of emotional transference. Doesn't the death of thousands of people and the destruction of an entire planet sound a little too familar? (Tarsus IV) Also fun theory, this is where Jim learns how Prime Spock defeated Khan and his relationship with Spock, but we will save this for the ITD post.
Jim is extremely motivated at this point to hunt down and kill Nero. Not only is it likely that he feels like he failed (which we know he absolutey hates) after the destruction of Vulcan, but now old memories of Tarsus IV have been dragged up ALONGSIDE Prime Spock's emotions. He's literally an emotional mess right now.
Prime Spock: "Billions of lives lost because of me, Jim. Because I failed."
So Prime spock just transferred all his feelings of failure to Jim. The same Jim who is extremely terrified of failure and would rather sacrifice himself than fail? Yeah this isn't going to be a good mix. (Again this will probably come up again in ITD)
Skipping ahead: They meet Scotty and Keenser, Jim & Scotty beam back up to the enterprise. Prime Spock insists that Jim needs to take over the Enterprise to stop Nero and he needs make Spock emotionally comprised. At this point I think Jim would literally do anything so long as it means a win against Nero.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After arguing with Spock and getting literally choked out on the bridge infront of everyone. He gets up and acts like he's fine and the fact he almost just got strangled to death is perfectly normal.
This is because brushes with death and violence ARE normal to him.
Also if we add up the bar fight, saving sulu, fighting the security team and now this scene we can definitely confirm that he has some self-destructive tendancies, he really does not care about himself at all.
Tumblr media
and I guess the final trauma to wrap up this movie would be the fact that he gets CHOKED OUT AGAIN BY NERO and he's presumably still injured from being choked out by Spock here... Need I say more at this point?
SUMMARY: AOS Jim is suffering from childhood trauma. He has self destructive tendencies, no self preservation, a fear of failure, issues with authority, abandonment issues and likes to put up a facade to hide it all.
BUT we can see Bones actively trying to dissuade him from these actions and we now have the introduction of Spock + the crew into his life. So I am interested to see his character development in ITD (and oh god the angst that is coming from that)
btw if I missed anything or you have your own headcanons I'm very interested to hear them!

anyways i rewatched star trek: into darkness last night and something something does anyone else get just how profound it is that the movie kicks us off with jim kirk being reprimanded about how he plays god (when really, it's just that jim is terrified of losing anyone, and the very thought of it hurts him so much that he would willingly break a gazillion little rules for it) and then it spirals quietly into jim going "i love my crew. i can't lose them. so i'll die instead". and if i said that yeah, star trek: into darkness has a lot of issues, but when i start screaming about how that movie is so poignant about jim kirk's character because this is jim kirk after he found some kind of family. he found some kind of family (as opposed to in star trek: 2009, when he was still stumbling around and trying to make sense of this awful, tragic legacy he was left to grapple with)--and now that he has a family, he can't ever lose them. he would rather lose himself than lose anyone ever. i think the movie attempted to say "oh, in into darkness, jim became more mature and learned how to be responsible and stop playing god", but in reality, i think the movie was really more so about "here is a very sad and scared guy who is so sick of losing people that he would rather go himself...except all of his friends and family and loved ones, little to his knowledge, were going to break a gazillion rules to bring him back." like, the movie literally starts with jim breaking the rules to save spock, and bones tells him "spock would let you die"--and does anyone else ever think about how lonely it must feel for jim to think, i need to save everyone here. i can't let anyone here die. but never apply the same thoughts to himself. does anyone. does anyone ever think about how lonely it must have been for jim to play so fast and loose with his own life but bring hell and earth together to save his own crew. does anyone else ever think about how strange and numbing it must have felt when he wakes up and realizes that there were people who loved him so much that they were willing to break the rules for him. like. does anyone else think about how star trek: into darkness is also so deeply about jim kirk realizing that he's also worth breaking the rules for. does. does anyone else. get this. does anyone else think about this

Ok I keep seeing posts about AoS erasing Tarsus IV and specifically how they made growing up without a dad somehow worse than witnessing genocide.
But I have to disagree.
For one, we have no confirmation that Tausus IV didn't happen. It still could have happened.
Second, I don't think AoS says that what happened with his dad was more traumatic. It's just a different kind of trauma.
Tarsus IV was something horrible. Something that can be blocked from the memory. Something that happened to a boy from a stable family who got help. It was traumatic. It was terrible. But it was a piece of his life, not his whole life.
Now losing his dad was horrible in a different way. It was not an event. It was not a horrific thing that he saw or experienced over months. This was his life. From the moment he was born he was dealing with it. There was no stable family to recover with. There was an absent mom and abusive step dad. There was no getting help and moving on. This was a constant and daily trauma.
It's PTSD versus C-PTSD.
TOS!Kirk could compartmentalize. He could shove that horrific event back and get back to life. He still had nightmares. He still had flashbacks. He still remembered. He still had survivors guilt. But it happened and he knows he needs to focus on what's next not what happened.
AOS!Kirk didn't have any compartments available. He couldn't shove it away it was his every waking moment. When he did get out of the house it was all he'd ever known. There was no "pre traumatic event" to fall back on and adjust to. Not until Starfleet when he does have something new to focus on do things fall into place. But this is new when we see him. This is him finding a stable life for the first time after a straight twenty years of trauma. So even by ST:Beyond he's better but still not completely healed (in comparison to Kirk having two full decades to heal from the trauma of Tarsus IV as of s1 of TOS).
It's not that AOS!Kirk is more traumatized or that losing his dad was more traumatic than the events on Tarsus IV, it's just that TOS!Kirk had a more stable life and thus was able to compartmentalize his trauma better than the life long unstable AOS! Kirk.

when the trope is they might not be lovers in the traditional sense but they have and always will be there for each other, they come as a pair even when they are physically apart, they're always in each other's thoughts and they'd choose one another over any friend, partner or family member

This April Fools, I thought it was only fitting that I finally share the greatest powerpoint I ever made while working a mentally and physically draining fulltime retail job at 18. This is my pride and joy. I hope you enjoy <3

About ten, fifteen years ago I wrote a story about a guy living in a Capitalist dystopia. His walls, furniture, and tableware are all covered in smart displays. Basically animated wallpaper. It's sold as being able to turn your room or objects into anything - A nice forest view, outer space, a fantasy realm... but the companies that run this stuff keep sneaking ads in.
It gets so bad he's always being woken up by adverts that offer insomnia cures and better bedding that play when he tries to sleep.
So he buys the ad-free tier, and it's great... for a few months. And then he starts getting adverts from 'premium partners'. So he goes up a level... and the same thing happens.
So he jailbreaks his wallpaper and sends all the ad servers to 0.0.0.0 and voila... he can sleep.
Until this SWAT team blows his door off and drag him off to jail. The Ad companies are suing him for loss of revenue for the products he' notionally have bought if he'd watched their adverts, based on some weird 'The average consumer buys X products with an average value of Y' calculation.
The judge is like 'well I dun wanna annoy the sponsors' so he RICO's this guy's house and possessions and sends him to jail.
... which is a nice relaxed non-volent offender jail for the corporately disenfranchised. But because these people have no money... there's no ads and now he's happy because the only place he's free... is in prison.
Which at the time was a bit much and now it's like: Called it.
Elon's suing companies for not advertising because he's losing revenue. He's also cranking the price of Ad Free Twitter. Disney and Amazon play adverts on their paid service when services used to be free because of the adverts... and now you have to pay to watch the adverts or go up a couple of tiers.
And google's going around freaking out about ad-blockers.

Do you guys think Barbie exists in the Star Trek universe? Because it would be really funny if they started making like diversity barbies when we discovered aliens were real. Like whenever someone joins the federation, they make barbies of them.
This is Vulcan Barbie, this is Tellarite Barbie, and this is Andorian Barbie, together with Star Fleet Barbie, they make up the Federation Barbies® collection. And then people were like but we want more representation, so they started making a "Federation and friends" collection, and there's Ferengi Barbie, Orion Barbie, Bajorian Barbie etc etc
