Tonight at Silver Circle we did Divination Night as a fundraiser. People got a half-hour reading for $20. I was doing lithomancy and also reading Arcane Bullshit. Somehow I was the most popular reader there, and had a full dance card, as it were.

I was doing a reading for someone, explained the difference between lithomancy and Arcane Bullshit, and he decided on Arcane Bullshit while saying "Yes, fuck me up, daddy". I think I crumbled into dust.

A friend looking for a post about circles reminded me that I've been thinking about the posts I've seen lately in witchblr-sphere about circles that give a sense of... I don't know exactly, it's almost like a shifting of purpose.

By that I mean, I've never considered a circle to be solely about protection in the sense of keeping yourself safe from spirits you evoke, and it's not just about containment.

Every action you make, from drawing or laying the circle to the words or songs you use, all of that is meant to create a focal point.

For me, it's demarcation, the strengthening of a connection - this is like adjusting an antenna for a clearer signal. You're making a space for a spirit to come through, you're carving out a spot for a spirit to be seen and heard. You're also allowing them to better see and hear you, and to affect change in your reality.

Why focus on the pumpkin blossoms when the cursed phrase "Tumblr Goddess" is right there?!

Ok. So for people who weren't around in the Old Days, you'd have to just assume that the writer of a published book actually knew what they were talking about. Like, they got published, right? That means the information must be of at least some quality, right?

So Edain McCoy, of Irish Potato Goddess fame (not alone in the belief that the stately potato was an ancient Irish food - Amber K in her mostly-good Covencraft suggests colcannon is an ancient Irish pagan dish) wrote in one of her books, I forget which, that Irish Druids would decorate their Samhain altars with pumpkin flowers. This was something I first heard from Lynna Landstreet teaching a class on pagan epistemology back in the old Wiccan Church of Canada days. She would tell us there were five things wrong with that claim, and what are they?

Ireland didn't have Druids

Druids didn't celebrate Samhain

We have no idea what a Druid altar would have looked like, if they had them, we don't know

Pumpkins are a New World plant

Pumpkins do not have flowers around Samhain

As for Tumblr Goddesses.....well, I suggest anyone interested in such a thing look up the totally real and not at all made up on Tumblr Greek Goddess Mesperyan, daughter of Hades and uhhh? Fuck, was it Persephone? It was all extremely stupid. People said she was a goddess of vengeance or revenge or something, I can't even remember, but I'm sure someone who sees this post will remember that deep lore.

I once made a poppet of the known criminal Doug Ford that I wrapped in one of the really nasty Saturn pentacles and buried in a coffin that I filled with asafoetida and real mayonnaise and then stapled shut and sealed with black wax.

I like to think about him down there in that tiny little coffin I interred in the cemetery, just surrounded by rancid eggs and oil, marinating in it.

So now that im doing the social.media for the wood carving club im part of I went to a weekly meet up that meets at a Senior center to take pics and chat and the steward of the space greeted me like this:

My dude, she dug his father up out of wherever the hell it was Tam had got himself to, handed him a list of talking points, and never thought that possibly, possibly, Rand would see through her transparent and overt attempt to use his own father to manipulate and control him, and then got angry at Tam when it - shockingly! - didn't work. That's not helping, and is in actuality proving to Rand that Aes Sedai can't be trusted, because just about every single one of them that he encounters tries to use control, manipulate, or physically hurt him. Moiraine manipulated him, Alanna Bonded him against his will, I don't even know where to begin with the box, but the icing on the shit cake that is Cadsuane's attitude to just about everything, and just about as outright cruel as using his father as a tool to control him, is the fact that she still had the male a'dam. And she couldn't even give him a reason for still having it!

It was always about control. It was never about anything else.

Everyone was always wondering what Rand is doing but only now, halfway through The Gathering Storm, does it occur to anyone to ask how Rand is doing, and it turns out the answer is: extremely bad!
