I will never forget my sophomore creative writing class.

I entered that class thinking that I’d quit, or that I’d find out the hard way that I’m not meant to write.

But the truth came out to be that I was the very last to quit. 6 months in, I was still excited to brainstorm ideas. I was still excited with each new prompt. I never stopped talking about my ideas, and classmates approached me hoping I’d edit theirs.

I had that class at the end of the day, and even after everything, I entered with an excitement in my bones. An itch to create.

15 out of 31 students dropped that class in the first month. 12 of those 16 students stayed in the class for an elective credit. And I was the only one who came back to that class to talk to my teacher any chance I got.

I was the one in that class who the teacher called me again to be a student alumni judge—the ONLY judge—for the first ever creative writing competition of our school.

I’m so glad I was wrong beginning of sophomore year.
