RWBY "Critics" and Tropes

Most of the "criticism" of RWBY ultimately amounts to tropes and expectations, not the quality of the show itself.

Now are there legitimate issues with RWBY's story? Absolutely. Pacing, cast bloat, lack of planning, dialogue...

But that's not what people talk about. They talk about the tropes they wanted to see and are mad weren't used.

Why is Adam a bad character? Because "misunderstood and misguided anti-hero who fights for a good cause and gets redeemed" is a popular trope people thought was going to be used and they got mad when it wasn't.

Why do people still argue Ironwood was right? Because "strong man making morally grey choices for the greater good" is a popular trope and people got mad that it wasn't how Ironwood was treated. Never mind that his actions only ever made things worse and that narratively, he exists to show why that kind of thinking fails, it's a trope they expected to see and got mad that it wasn't there.

Why is Ruby a "bad protagonist"? Because "wide-eyed ingenue who gets their idealism broken and has to 'grow up' into a more cynical version of themself to save the day" is a trope they like and expected to see. Never mind that one of RWBY's core themes from the beginning has been rejecting cynicism and embracing heroism, it's a trope they like and got mad that it wasn't used.

Everything the "critics" say about RWBY basically boil down to them not liking the actual theme of the show and getting mad that it wasn't an entirely different show with a completely different tone, genre, and theme that they would like better.

I was an angry mess in HS with undiagnose authism and anger issues who slept like shit and made it EVERYONES PROBLEM.

Until my bff mom pet me on the head and played with my hair and BOOM! 12 hours if uninterrupted sleep.

My classmates tought i was on drugs when i came back.

I’ve been watching Sk8 The Infinity and I’m so glad our Adam isn’t into highschool children 😁 bare minimum. I wish he’d stop being compared to that freakweirdo over there 💔💔💔

Sk8 Adam though has some pretty crazy design stuff and his style is cool but he’s like way too weird to the mains 💔 everything else would’ve been awesome if it weren’t for the flirting with the main character Langa…

Sk8 is such a good anime, it's so much fun. The aesthetic similarities between that Adam and rwby Adam caught me by surprise but it was entertaining to contrast the two lol. Sk8 Adam is so...much. And the preying on Langa was 100% weird, but at least the show was pretty damn clear about it.

Comparing the two is fun, but yeah, the two Adams are very different characters with very different purposes. For one, Sk8 seems invested in making its Adam a (slightly) better person.

adam fic idea (different anon here): he gets the best sleep of his life and realizes the error of his ways in the morning, sends blake a genuine apology but doesn't try to get back with her because he understands how heinous that would be, and then re-reforms the white fang into basically what it was under ghira and works on making menagerie a truly better civilization regardless of everything going on in the rest of the world

The amount of sleep he'd need for that steep of character growth would be considered a coma by most medical professionals

I had this dream where during Beacon era Blake went to visit someone's apartment in vale and found Adam just chilling in a zip up hoodie and his jammies and the person Blake was visiting was like "oh yeah that's my roommate dw about him"

and Blake is like what the fuck dude and Adam just tells her he "dropped out" of the white fang cause the stress was too much. it just wasn't for him.

and Blake accuses him of abandoning the cause and Adam is like "Blake I'm barely in my 20s and we were stationed in vale, one of the least strategically critical regions for the white fang. the cause isn't going to implode becauei take some me time."

Blake then had a fucking mental breakdown because this she doesn't know how to deal with an Adam that's just a chill dude

He using "Adam Taurus" as cover to hiding his real identity.

Just thinking about this headcanon.

He could easily do that considering his background is implied to be less than bedecked in paper trails. I like the name Adam personally, but "Taurus" makes a fitting stage name for a guy with horns.

Still, I think it would mean something to him to stick to the name he was given by his parents. A kind of memorial. A reminder. And a weapon against any SDC-adjacent asshole who recognizes where it comes from.

Canonically he has an american accent but if you wanted to give him something else, French would be logical based on his allusion. You could also make him Japanese if you're leaning into his yakuza-esque aesthetic and iaido fighting style.
