i have VERY complex thoughts about peril and kestrel and their relationship, especially related to the dod. kestrel is actually such a complex character i love when bitches are morally grey and selfish and make bad choices and hurt people. anyways i imagine peril probably has some really confusing feelings around the fact that kestrel was forced to leave her with scarlet but then went and abused a whole bunch of other dragonets their whole childhoods BECAUSE of losing her. like. the gutwrenching combo of guilt (because its technically her fault kwstrel hated the dod) and jealousy (why did THEY get to be raised by her mom and not her, why was she stuck being a weapon for scarlet while they had a family) and then more guilt (how dare she be jealous of them, they had a terrible childhood, why would you be jealous of someone who was abused thats messed up, especially since it was your fault) and hate (kestrel abandoned her [even if she couldn’t help it], killed her brother as far as she’s aware, made her very first friends’ lives a living hell, and got her only childhood teacher and support [osprey] killed for defending kestrel from scarlet). ANYWAYS. yeah. kestrel i assume also has similarly mixed feelings but at the very least she loves peril and peril can’t even be sure of that.

also first time drawing my kestrel design!!! i based it more off of european and common kestrels than american kestrwls like ik a lot of people do. she also has the same horn and spine colours as my peril, and markings around her wingclaws /the edges of her wings (which u cant see here) that are inverted from perils explodey markings bc i wanted to have some distinct familial traits in them. she also has a bigger schnozz-horn than most of the skywings i draw bc i wanted to give her an interesting trait not based in her name or her relation to peril. also i find it rlly funny that she’s described as being rlly big and taller than scarlet when kestrels are one of the smallest birds of prey (altho i do imagine scarlet as being diminutive for a skywing, in canon she is big and kestrwls just even bigger).

alt ver w/ peril coloured that i dont like as much,,, i rlly wanted kestrel to be the main focus here + for peril to look very clearly strange and alien (bc firescales and also they never knew e/o) and i think the pure orange peril does that better here.

In your Jewel redesign, you said that Wasp probably wouldn’t let her get away with full drag, but that does make me curious. What would a dragon in drag would look like?

you will not BELIEVE how much I've thought about this, both during and after designing her. I can answer your question and beyond!!

The (Drag) Queens of Pantala

In order to properly explore Pantalan drag, I first looked to the (cultural) definition of drag itself, as well as learning some brief history. With the first known preformance occurring in 1867 (Although not truly popularized until the 19th century,) Human Rights Campaign and other LGBTQ+ organizations describe drag as a preformance art form that uses costumes, makeup and other tools to illustrate exaggerated expressions of gender identity, intended to critique gender inequality or other social justice issues. Drag has traditionally been preformed/pioneered by members of the LGBTQ+ community, predominantly gay men and/or people of color.

With this in mind, Pantalan drag was most likely created and developed by Silkwings (especially in jewel hive) as a form of protest art. I imagine the movement was later popularized by hivewing audiences, becoming more palatable to the wider public after being endorsed by a privileged group as art movements often are. While there are a myriad of social justice issues Pantalan drag could have originally meant to critique, the loss of Silkwing rights and deforestation of Pantala were probably the two main driving topics.

Their Artistic Process

As for the actual production of drag costumes or makeup, Silkwings would have had to work with what was available to them - fruits, vegetables, basic dyes/craft materials and their own silk. They would construct their own jewelry using beads instead of gold, weave their garments, and grind mica with pigments and oil to make eyeshadow.

Leaves, roots and trees would be frequent design elements of early drag: with the eye-catching glamour of a dragon working to simultaneously distract detractors and seek out supporters. Heavy accessorizing and imagery of wealth would also be important to presenting Silkwings as equal to Hivewings, through metaphorical sense. The processes of creating Pantalan drag is what leads me to believe it would prosper best in jewel hive: outside of their relaxed rules and support of Silk/Hive equality, they would also have easiest access to craft materials, dyes and a lively art scene.. endorsed by Lady Jewel herself.

I’ve had a revelation

So in the books, Perils scales were described as copper colored, and that got me thinking. When you mix copper with fire, the fire happens to turn into a green color. And the I thought, “wait, what if peril but green?”

I know that Perils scales aren’t actually made of copper and this probably isn’t chemically nor biologically possible, and to that I say I don’t care, this looks so awesome
