A base, un-upgraded nail does 5 damage, which is exactly the amount of health a Belfly has. It's possible to hit a Belfly with something that does less than 5 damage, such as a beam from Elegy. This knocks it backwards, letting the player move the Belfly away from its original spawn point.

Mee maamaa, weewamawawa!! 🎶🐛
A bit of a break from what I normally post on this account, but this is important enough to me to derail for one post.
On June 7th, the HK Speedrunning community will be running a day-long marathon raising money for the ACLU in conjunction with HKC’s Annual Happy Couple Fundraiser! The event is themed around categories that save grubs, so if you like grubbies (and want to support a LGBTQ charity during pride month!) I recommend checking it out! Super excited to be doing this event again. :3
You can come watch and support the marathon on the speedrunning community's Twitch Channel, beginning at 2pm UTC/10am EDT on June 7th! It's gonna be a ton of fun. Grubs for trans rights!!!!!!!!

By first hitting it into the grub jar, and then saving the grub, you can cause this stalactite to defy the law of gravity.

The longest non-infinite cdash in the game extends from this wall in Crystal Peak all the way through King's Pass, measuring at a whopping 442 units.
[Video ID: Gameplay footage of Hollow Knight. The player charges Crystal Heart near the middle of a wall in Crystal Peak. After releasing it, they shoot to the left. They continue moving along the same trajectory into Dirtmouth, passing through the elevator, and continuing all the way across the top layer of King's Pass. They stop moving after hitting a sloped wall in the upper left side of the room. /End ID]

In the second Hornet fight, triggering her dialogue during a cdash will freeze the Knight in a standing state without changing their vertical position. This results in a funny visual bug if the Knight was in the air when triggering the dialogue. After gaining back control, the visual glitch will persist until they enter certain animations, including dream nailing, using a spell, or taking damage.

In the overworld False Knight fight, it is possible to stagger him during the final set of slams as long as enough damage is done before he breaks the floor. This allows the player to stagger him infinitely, as long as they continue to deal damage fast enough each cycle.
It's also possible to do this to Failed Champion's dream fight, but never possible in Godhome.

[Image ID: A tumblr reply by @starman-waiting-in-the-sky07 reading "That’s exactly how I got it (but with falling of the side to see if there was anything instead of thorns)" /End ID]
So this originally had me skeptical because this should only work if you have early control in some way, and getting hazard respawned on its own shouldn't do that. Usually, you'll need to either 1) have early control from somewhere else, and then use that early control to override the game taking away control when you sit on a bench or 2) sit on the bench, and then gain control back using some other stored state.
Turns out that if you get hazard respawned, and your hazard respawn is in on top of a bench, you can interact with the bench before you gain control back. Ordinarily, after getting hazard respawned you'll have to wait for the Knight to stand up before you can move around or do anything. BUT if you're on a bench and the stand up timer runs out, you'll still be given control on the bench. You...don't even need another form of storage for this, it just works. Team Cherry, why...
This is relevant pretty much nowhere else because there are very few places where you can hazard respawn on top of a bench. If you move around this room pretty much at all, you'll update your hazard respawn to be somewhere else, so this can only really happen if you throw yourself into spikes right after you load into your save file. Thanks @a-press for helping solve this mystery!
(Tumblr won't let me upload a second video on the same post, so here's a youtube video instead.)
youtube
[Video ID: Gameplay footage of the player in White Palace. The player loads into their save file from the file select screen. After they get off of the bench, they dash right into the spikes below. They are able to sit on the bench before fully standing up and open inventory. After a bit of delay, they dash off of the bench with inventory open, still in the sitting state, and leave and reenter the room. They open inventory again and move around as they equip charms. /End ID]
When I was first playing though white palace, I had a glitch where in that room with a bench just above the first fly parkour section and below the big room with loads of sawblades, I was on the bench and still moving while in the charm menu? I don’t have footage cause it was deleted somehow
Sounds like bench storage! i.e., keeping the state of being on a bench while not actually on it. There are a lot of ways of getting it, mostly ones that involve messing with quick map, but you can get it with hazard early control too. It's hard to say how you got it without a video, but here's one way I could see someone getting it accidentally:
[Video ID: Gameplay footage of the player in White Palace. The player falls on top of a Wingmould to get double hit into thorns and immediately dashes to the bench and opens inventory. They begin moving around off of the bench, still in a sitting state with inventory open, and equip a few charms. Their inventory automatically closes as they enter the room above. They go through the first platforming section of the room, then begin charging Crystal Heart on one of the platforms but open inventory and let go of Crystal Heart before it's fully charged. They equip a few more charms and overcharm Hiveblood with their jump key, and can be seen jumping up and down behind the charm menu as they spam the button. /End ID]
If you closed inventory and left the sitting state before you entered another room, the effects of the glitch wouldn't persist. As you can see, leaving the room with inventory open would have let the state persist indefinitely (until you bench next that is).
The persistent version of bench storage has some funny effects like letting you equip charms while off of the bench, but you're also in a glitched state where you can softlock just by opening inventory. Opening inventory always takes away control, but with bench storage, the game doesn't know to give it back. That's why I charge cdash before opening inventory towards the end, and then release it to tell the game to give control back. Fun stuff!

something interesting that happened to me a while ago is i got myself out of bounds!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i did this by accidentally perfectly timing a crystal dash off the elevator here! do you have any info on the hitboxes for how this would happen?
There's an invisible wall around the elevators in city, which can stop your cdash for some reason. After you hit the wall the elevator pushed you into the ceiling. You can do this on other city elevators too! The ones below spire are a common one.
[Video ID: Gameplay footage of Hollow Knight. The player charges Crystal Heart on one of the elevators below Watcher's Spire. After they release it they get stuck in the wall. /End ID]
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot of the city elevator in the large Rafters room with hitboxes on. The elevator is positioned about halfway up its tether with the Knight standing on it. The elevator itself is wrapped in several rectangles of various colors. There is a red arrow pointing to it with red text reading "one of these lmao". /End ID]
I was going to try to point out which one the invisible wall is, but honestly, Team Cherry probably doesn't even know. 80% sure it's the cyan one, though.

Most yes/no prompts in the game are technically 0 geo tolls behind the scenes. This means that if you've edited your save to have a negative geo count, the player can't accept the flower because they're too poor.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot of the player interacting with the Grey Mourner. In the upper left of the screen, their geo count reads "-1". The interaction prompt reads "Accept the Gift?" with the option to select "Yes" or "No". The yes option is greyed out, with text below stating "Not enough Geo". /End ID]

The room outside of Markoth in Edge has a large amount of out of bounds geometry above the room, which vaguely matches the shape of the real room above it. This is most likely because this room and the room above were planned to be one room before being split during the game's development.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A zoomed out screenshot of the Edge room with hitboxes on. The out of bounds geometry is surrounded with red brackets and takes up about 2/3 of the screen vertically. The text reads "inaccessible geometry". /End ID]

#hollow knight#what if you quit the game and reloaded your save?#would the arena just be inaccessible and thus present it's own slew of problems?
Nothing about the arena breaks permanently, you're just stuck in "wave 1" until you reload it. Technically, even just walking in and out of the room will do that, but good luck leaving the room when you're stuck in jail lol. So yeah, a save quit will undo all your hard work of getting stuck. Tragic :(
It is possible to softlock yourself in the Crossroads aspid arena by shade souling the first aspid while outside of it, preventing the second wave from spawning.
To do this in vanilla, you would have to leave Crossroads through either itemless baldur kill or going out of bounds, depending on whether or not you enjoy major glitches. From there, it's trivial to obtain dash and claw, tram to city, access Sly through Blue Lake, make a crystal peak trip for shopkeeper's key, buy elegant key from Sly, obtain Shade Soul, and stag back to Dirtmouth.
Can't believe Team Cherry didn't plan for this, smh.

This is Abyss_07, an unused room that only exists on early patches of the game. Attempting to leave the room puts the player out of bounds on the right side of palace grounds, as if they had exited Hidden Station. Reentering the transition softlocks the game, as Hidden Station was not added until the Hidden Dreams update, and at this point in development the transition is one-way.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot of Abyss_07. In the center the Knight is sitting on a bench, and the background is filled with spools of thread and balls of yarn with a bunch of needles stuck in them. /End ID]
I'm sure that bench has lore implications, but as a speedrunner I haven't the slightest clue.

Gruz Mother's "babies" are stored out of bounds until they're spawned in at the end of the fight. After they're killed by the player, the arena doors will open. We can softlock ourselves inside of the arena by going out of bounds and killing them before the fight begins, making it impossible for the game to spawn them in.
