Guys, stop being crap to creators. You aren’t hurting Amazon. You’re stealing from writers.

the last part is so important for everyone to remember
"life doesnt get better, you just get stronger" does NOT include ages 11-17. life does in fact just get better from there. those years are dogshit. like, you do get stronger but its mostly just a factor of not being 11-17 anymore. positive thinking helps but it doesnt fix whatevers going on at 15, you have to brute force through that one raw

i recently watched moonage daydream (dir. by brett morgen, 2022), it’s a documentary on david bowie. normally i’m not the type of person to watch documentaries for fun unless i particularly have to, but if i ever have to make a documentary (which i probably will cause i want to go to film school) i would want to look and feel like moonage daydream. it was just so outstanding to look at and hear. it was all so much about sounds and visuals that it felt like watching a fever dream being played in film. it truly captured what i like to think was the essence of who david bowie was.

i firmly believe this. every time that you go away and come back you return someone different because experience changes people. every passing moment changes a person, even slightly, even with the tiniest passing thought. you can’t expect people to remain the same over time, people are entitled to change their mind.

Anyone else noticed the way Felix is always baring his neck?? Like even the first time he meets Oliver he's doing this:
Tumblr media
Like literally just tossing his head back and exposing his throat. We get this shot of Felix so many times that it's almost a motif lol he does it again here:
Tumblr media
And of course he does it in the tub:
Tumblr media
And again, for the very last time, in the maze :
Tumblr media
Any time I see an image repeating like this over and over again I start wondering how it is significant. If we're reading Saltburn as an non-supernatural vampire story, which imo it absolutely is, we can see Felix's repeated vulnerability. He's exposing his life force to Oliver. We see the pulse in his neck, thinly veiled and beating under his skin. We see his fragility and his exposure and Oliver sees it too. Oliver, functioning as a 'vampire' of sorts, just wants to take. And take. And take from Felix. His obsession with consuming Felix in turn functionally consumes him. He never kisses Felix, he never gets that "bite" Felix is opening himself up to in these moments and I don't think any amount of Felix would be enough for Oliver. Further, i think Oliver actually recognizes his own insatiability in those final moments in the maze and decides that he is going to take Felix in the only way he knows will be complete and absolute. The utter finality of death appeals to Oliver in that moment because he wants everything to *last* and if he can end Felix's life, he knows at least he can do something to Felix that will be eternal.
Tumblr media
Which leads us to see Felix hanging his head. He has no life force left to bare to Oliver anymore. He slumps his shoulders and crouches in on himself in these final moments. Oliver has finally drained him.

i’ve seen this film two times (yesterday) was the second time. when finishing there was something eternally wrong when trying to identify and analyse the entire film and plot of Saltburn, and i think this is it, to a point at least.
oliver was just someone who wanted to belong to a world of fantasy. the film is given to us through his eyes and unreliable narration that we see since the beginning when we see the snippets of his conversation with the unconscious elspeth. he asks himself too many times if he was in love with felix, to the point he seems to almost be trying to convince himself that he isn’t in love with felix, wrestling with those feelings.
Saltburn in itself is a place of wonder and mystique in which everything is hyperbolic. everyone who lives in this place of fantasy, their traits are overly exaggerated and we can see so physical. in the beginning with farleigh we can see he has glitter in his face, that glitter is gone by the time he goes with “the begging bowl” to felix. venetia is seen and put through our narrator as something outrageous yet seemingly in a way childish in her clothing, like a teenager, hormonal and sexual and vulnerable and something he can control. felix is more complex in the eyes of oliver, the director plays a lot with light always putting felix in the light oliver in the dark only to come out of darkness when felix sees him. when at saltburn we can see it more pointed the sort of innocent demeanour in which felix was painted to the point it’s practically childish: the harry potter copy same as venetia and farleigh but with him it seems heightened, the lollipop in his mouth, the bright colours of his clothes.
midsummer’s night dream was when the play ended, or at least intermission came around. when the curtain was torn from its ceiling and came crashing down. the final mystique broken and oliver left in ruins to deal with the fact that he didn’t really plan it well enough because he was so conceited as to leave his phone in the bathroom. now he has to deal with the fact that the boy he loves won’t speak to him and nobody even knows his name at his own birthday party. he has to sit down with himself and the fact that he doesn’t belong
oliver romanticises himself as this grand mastermind in his own narrative who was able to orchestrate everything to precise perfection and get what he wanted. the reality of the situation is that Saltburn would have been terribly more different if it had been objective.
Oliver failed. Oliver failed. He failed. Venetia lost interest, Farleigh came back, Felix found out his lie. He is not a brilliant mastermind who plotted the whole theft from day on, he popped a boy's tire so he could get close to him, to bask in the nearness to his warmth, and that was enough until it wasn't.
He isn't a genius, he's attentive and greedy and lucky and he can't help himself. He was pretty enough and Elspeth was broken enough that it worked in his favor after nearly 20 years. He tells himself he orchestrated the whole thing from the start, that it was "just work," and that he didn't gradually want more and more and more, and if you believe him, you failed too.

i always say i want to grow up, a lot of people do. the thing is that i don’t really want to grow up i just want to have my own life with my own apartment, and if paying rent and all that stuff is the price to pay for that inkling of freedom hell i’ll do it, but i don’t want to grow up. i don’t think anyone truly wants to grow up, i think it’s just the suffocating expectation of society surrounding us that makes everyone think— “maybe when i’m older…” but there’s always a but in the fine print of the clause, so fuck you all i don’t wanna grow up i just want my freedom back. something tells me i had it at some point.
