based on the drabble prompt “i didn’t know it was this bad”
“Hey,” A groans, head pounding and muscles throbbing. “Can you grab me another blanket?”
B makes their way toward the couch where A is already nestled beneath a throw blanket and the comforter from their bed and presses a hand to their forehead. They wince, sympathetically sucking air in through their teeth.
“i don’t think so, honey,” B says apologetically. their eyes are sad as they push a stray lock of hair from A’s face. “You’re even hotter now than you were this morning. I want to take your temperature again, okay?”
A sighs but sits up, the room spinning a bit as they hear B gather supplies from the other room. They return with a damp washcloth, a small pill bottle, and a digital thermometer. They press a hand to A’s chest, gently ushering them to lean back against the cushions.
Taking A’s face in their hand, B gently pries their jaw open and slips the thermometer beneath their tongue. “Good job,” they murmur, placing the cloth against A’s sweaty forehead. They shudder violently, but don’t resist.
“I know, I know,” B reassures them. “I know it feels like you’re freezing, but it’ll help.”
A shudders again. The wet cloth is agonizing against their skin and the thermometer in their mouth is making them nauseous. It feels like it’s taking forever to read as the probe slowly heats up beneath A’s tongue.
B’s eyes are locked on the numbers as they slowly ascend.
As if on cue, the thermometer sounds in loud, angry trills that pierce through A’s throbbing skull. Though they’ve closed their eyes, flashes of red still infiltrate their field of vision with every beep.
B takes in a sharp breath as they pull the thermometer from A’s lips, rapidly feeling their face, neck and chest in succession.
“Fuck,” they mutter, tossing the thermometer to the side. A wills their eyes to focus on the reading, and it takes a moment for their body to cooperate, but eventually they see the reading glaring back at them.
104.2.
“Shit,” B curses again, planting a kiss on A’s boiling temple. “I didn’t know it was this bad.”

Really craving some soft, soft stuff.
Soft, hands-on caretaking. Fussing. Are you cold? You look kinda chilly. Bundling someone up. Soft bossy caretaking. No you're not going out that sick. Embarrassing questions - have you been sneezing like this all day? Is your nose still all stuffy?
Being upset because someone else is feeling so miserable. A caress mixed with a frown. A gentle but intense hug, a sigh muffled into the curve of their neck. Exclamations - christ, you sound ill.
Comforting someone in distress. Holding someone who is crying, giving an extra squeeze just to express the intensity of one's compassion. Tears of relief becoming outright bawling, like a delayed breakdown.
Grabbing a hand and kissing it. Kissing the top of someone's head. Kissing the bridge of a sneezy nose.
Poor sweetheart. Poor thing. Poor creature. Poor bastard.
Just soft, I need soft.
#whump#illness#caretaking#gosh yeah#sometimes the caretaking needs to be soft#sometimes the whumpee is a walking *handle with care* sign#just. yeah. all this

B has been feeling a little weird all day. A little shivery, a little tired, a little achey, starting to get sniffly, but overall okay. They don’t feel sick per se, just a little off.
Cut to B having a little movie night with their partner A, who is cradling B’s head in their lap. A is carding softly through their hair as they feel B’s breathing start to grow deeper and slower. They smile and move their fingers down towards B’s eyes, only to brush their forehead and stop. Is it just them, or is B feeling a little warm? They move their hand to B’s cheek, their other cupping the nape of their neck.
“You feeling okay? You feel really warm,” A asked, feeling B roll a little bit in their lap.
B mumbled something before burying their hot face deeper into the blankets and sniffling liquidly.
“Aw honey, let me get you some Tylenol so you can get some rest.”

not sure if i've posted this before but sickfic where the only contact whumpee has with caretaker is through the phone. here, have some thoughts.
caretaker watches on helplessly as things to from bad to worse until they have to come save them even if it's not safe
caretaker calling someone closer and saying "they've been sick for a few days but they were really tired on the phone yesterday and didn't say much, and now they're not picking up. i think something is wrong."
"i know you don't like whumpee, but please, you have to go check on them. i'm getting worried."
whumpee calls caretaker because they don't know what to do anymore and caretaker calls a friend to get them to the hospital, stays on the phone with whumpee until help arrives
texts getting shorter and fewer and farther between, at first saying things like "i'm fine, stop fussing"," then a message that just says "tired," then radio silence
#whump#sickfic#caretaking#illness#omg yes#especially that last one#illness making the whumpee act differently is such a good trope

In my mind any whumpee can be divided into one of two categories:
1) Doesn't complain one bit unless it's Really Really bad
2) Complains a ton until it gets Really Really bad, then goes dangerously quiet

fever chills part 2 (a followup to this post)
forcing themselves to go to some outdoor event when they’re under the weather and shivering miserably in their coat the whole time
“how’re you feeling?” “I’m cold.”
catching a chill in damp, rainy weather. later, as the sniffles come on, they’re unable to shake the cold in their bones no matter how many blankets they wrap up in
teeth chattering against a glass thermometer
huddling in a thick bathrobe after their shower, too shivery to expose their wet skin to the air and change into warm, dry clothes
a heating pad on the highest setting, arms wrapped around it and clutching it to their chest
shivering deep internal shivers in the core of their gut that can’t be touched by external heat
goosebumps that creep and crawl across their skin
laying on the heating vent or by the radiator
shoulders hunched up to their ears to try and preserve body heat
enlisting their pet to lay on them because they’re so warm
when it’s the early stages of the fever, and they’re not shivering yet—they just feel chilled to their bones
big sweatshirts over two other layers of clothing, arms tightly folded against their body
blankets pulled up to their nose and staying in bed all day to try and keep warm
that horrible feeling when they’re sweating from their fever, then their layers ofclothes get damp, then they’re damp AND cold when the chills come back

Melting into a puddle at the idea of someone being chilly all day, and coming home to find their significant other curled up in bed with a fever.
Of course they're sad to see their loved one so unwell, but getting to snuggle the human equivalent of a hot water bottle feels so good. After a whole day of feeling desperately cold, hugging their too-hot partner feels almost heavenly.
#whump#illnes#fever#caretaking#yesssssssssss omg#just being their partner's personal space heater while they have a fever asjfjfkdksls#love this

When the telltale sign for character A getting sick is when their place is littered with mugs and cups of tea all partly emptied, or freshly brewed and then forgotten because the person was feeling too ill, feverish and miserable to keep track of their intake of fluids. So they keep brewing fresh tea, but then forget to drink it or can't finish it because they collapse in a pile of blankets and tissues on their couch.
Of course their partner / friend B knows exactly what's going on as soon as they walk into A's place.

We all love injuring our blorbos, but I think the added risk of sepsis makes it even better. They get really hurt in an unclean environment like a forest or swamp or prison, and when they're found days later, their wounds are severely infected and they're running a dangerously high fever. Time is crucial and every second counts as they're rushed back and taken to the hospital/medic, their team worried that they might lose them.
#whump#injury#infection#sepsis#this is sooooooo my jam!!!#literally like takes the infection trope to a whole new level#you can also get sepsis just like. anywhere#a wound can turn septic so fast even with modern medicine#so it's fantastic for whump babyyyyyyy#also the *time is crucial* YES!!#this shit rocks

(this isn't a prompt/request, just my own ramblings since i don't have a dedicated blog to put it on and i thought you in particular might appreciate it. Feel free to ignore qwq)
i'm a big fan of when the more argumentative, hardass-type characters end up being really quiet and almost listless when theyre really sick or cold
a character usually being the first to speak up in any situation (usually with some kind of complaint or disagreement,) and the thing that tips the rest of the gang off that something isn't quite right is when they keep falling silent during a group discussion; staring off into space; and lingering in transitional spaces, spaced out.
ooooo yes I LOVE this 🤩 it's the small little demeanor changes that could only be caught by the people who know them best
the one who's always got a snarky comeback is silent, eyes glazing over as they stare off into the distance. or the one who can be a bit of a jerk at times rendered silent and curled in on themselves because they're cold.
something is just OFF and their friends know it.
#whump#illness#i love love love when an illness noticeably changes someone's behaviour#and the people around them notice!!!
