Emerging Songwriter’s Songwriting Workshop (Recap)
Hanna Leary
Tumblr media
Last Wednesday evening, Emerging Songwriter’s held its first Songwriting Workshop of the semester. The event, moderated by Danielle Erker and featuring noted singer/songwriter, Tyler Lombard (www.tylerlombard.com), provided the opportunity for MBM students to hone their craft with the guidance of a professional. Lombard, who writes music primarily for film, television, and digital media; has had his work featured in Rookie Blue, Daily Planet, and Degrassi, among other programs.
Hailing from New Brunswick, Lombard attributes his parents’ copy of Elton John’s “Live In Australia” tour DVD for sparking his interest in the world of music and performance. After being gifted a guitar by his uncle at age 10, he began exploring his own ability to write songs. Such songs garnered the attention of Amy Foster, co-writer of Michael Buble’s hits; who, after hearing Lombard’s talent search audition, offered him the opportunity to write in Nashville. Following his experiences in Nashville, Lombard began releasing music through a friend’s YouTube channel, and later joined a band. His band’s exposure, led him to sign record deals with the major labels in Canada as well as in Singapore; however, due to unforeseen circumstances, the deals fell through. Rather than retreat, Lombard readjusted his career path and moved to Toronto. The move coincided with the director of Bell Media’s Catherine Jones, who was in need of a songwriter to write for CTV programming. Lombard’s work impressed Jones, and Bell Media swiftly became Lombard’s biggest client, continuing his work with them today.
Tyler Lombard’s extensive career experience has also given him keen insight into the writing process and breakdown of a song. He explained that dissecting a song or songs of inspiration can help you write a track that fits into the same genre. Ex. Breaking down the songs of The Beatles to help write a hit. Lombard also emphasized the importance of answering the 3 Q’s when songwriting; Who’s talking? To Who? Why? As this establishes a conversation and allows the opportunity to provide context to the listener.
In regards to writing a pop song, Lombard says that the lyrics take focus over the melody. Because most chart-topping pop hits are under 3 minutes, writers are now tasked with less time to establish a story; choosing to omit components (like a bridge), to stay within the time constraints. It also means that there is a greater focus placed on the track’s first line. To help burgeoning pop writers, Lombard suggests starting with the chorus, and to conduct research in order to craft an attention-grabbing first line. He also advises against over-descriptive titles and repeating the work’s title within the first line, as it can draw the listener’s attention away early.
For prospective songwriter’s, Lombard shared the Do’s and Don’ts he’s learned in regards to licensing and co-writing as well as helpful tips to stimulate creativity.
DO:
¡      Register every song recorded with SOCAN
¡      Try to free-write every morning for at least 10 minutes, no editing
·      Be silent –take breaks without headphones to stimulate ideas
¡      Value networking
¡      Mind map ideas on the go (Lombard recommends the app, Trello)
·      Look to songwriting books for inspiration; Lombard recommends Pat Pattison’s Writing Better Lyrics
¡      Begin a co-writing session with a chat/coffee/walk to establish a connection and get on the same page with a co-writer
DON’T:
¡      Wait until the end of a co-write session to discuss splits (% earned by each); Lombard suggests splitting even between all co-writers involved
¡      Limit yourself to one genre or one style of writing
A big thank you goes out to Emerging Songwriters, for organizing and conducting this event; as well to Tyler Lombard, for sharing his experiences and influencing a new generation of songwriters. You can follow Tyler on Instagram @tylerlombardmusic.
For updates on the next co-writing session, follow MBM Emerging Songwriters on Facebook and on Instagram @emergingsongwriters.

Record Shopping With J.P. and Anne Lawrence of Townline Artist Management
Tumblr media
Josh Wickins
Sometimes things are just too good to be true. As an avid record collector and record store frequenter, getting asked to do a piece on Townline and their artist’s recent record store adventure, was a match made in heaven.
Townline Artist Management hosted a fantastic event on a chilly Thursday evening on January 17, at one of the best record store chains around, Kops Records in Oshawa. As always, I arrived far too early but as a kid in a candy store, I couldn’t have been happier to look around before everyone showed up. Once everyone arrived, there was chatting, laughter, and a whole lot of music talk circling the shop. There was just this aura throughout the room, and aura of like-minded, music-loving people, and it truly was a great evening with fellow music professionals.
The idea was to have each artist pick a record and talk about it, discuss making physical copies of music as opposed to streaming, and their thoughts on making EPs and full-lengths in their own music careers.
First up to chat with me was R&B artist Anne Lawrence of Free Mind Operations. Born and raised from a musical family, music has always been a part of Anne’s life, and with a handful of recorded songs under her belt, she’s well on her way as a young musician. She is hopeful to have an album or EP out in the future and said she will make it into physical copies, “if possible”. With the help of Townline, Free Mind, and her personal producer, her goal of making an album can absolutely come true. While combing through the records, Anne right off the hop went to the Hip-Hop section.
The genre that she resonates with and is the biggest fan of. Picking up albums from artists like Kanye West, The Weeknd, Eminem and many more, before settling on two records: 50 Cent’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin”, and Rihanna’s “Loud”. When I asked her why these two albums, the response for Rihanna was simple. “Rihanna is a boss woman”. Known for empowering women the world over, not only through music but through everything else she does. Anne’s reasoning for 50 Cent was her love of his music, his story, and challenges. Being able to in a way relate to some of those challenges, which is not only a big thing in Hip-Hop but music in general. Anne was a joy to talk to and learning about her and her musical influence was great. A budding musician, with a passion for Hip-Hop and R&B, and drive to create.
Next up was J.P, a musician and producer of Hi-Cut Records whom I had the privilege of sitting down and interviewing a while back (x).  Under the artist name Johnny Blue, J.P mixes everything from Hip-Hop, Jazz, Blues, Lo-fi, R&B/Soul into his music. He describes himself as a “student of music”, constantly drawing from older music trying to “find the constant” in those old songs that are still relevant today. Picking out two polar opposite albums, legendary Miles Davis’ “Nefertiti” album, and then “Donuts” by J-Dilla. Coming from an artist like J.P that was no surprise. What also didn’t surprise me was him asking the shop owner if there was any King Krule (one of his favourite artists, who he draws heavy influence from).
You can find all of Johnny Blue’s music online on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, but he hopes to make physical copies in the future. “Physicals are making a comeback after the die down”. Something I 100% agree with. Vinyl, CDs, and even cassettes are all making a huge comeback. Yes, streaming services are convenient and a great source to find and listen to music, but fans of music all over the world love to buy physical copies of the music they love.
Hearing young aspiring artists like these two talk about physical music and their desire to not let them die out was truly refreshing to see. As an avid record buyer, it’s nice to see I’m not alone. Townline Artist Management put on a truly amazing event, that I’m so glad I got to experience, so thank you to them, their artists, and especially Kops Records for the amazing evening of music, laughter, and good people.

Championships - Meek Mill
Tumblr media
Juenelle Barkie
These past few years have been busy for Meek Mill. He has had ongoing battles with the law, a personal relationship in the public eye, and the trending hashtag #FreeMeekMill. Since being released from prison after five months due to an unjustly sentencing Meek dove into his music doing what he does best. Depicting his trials, tribulation, and most profound of thoughts Meek has triumphantly announced his return.
Meek’s fourth album opens with a sample of Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight. It is certainly not what I expected from Meek, but he makes it work into his rendition of the song. This whole album shows Meek’s growth as a person and as an artist. The album features many great artists like Jay Z, Future, Rick Ross and even Toronto’s very own, Drake. The two have publicly been known to not see eye to eye once upon a time. The album has tracks to vibe to like “Almost Slipped” and “24/7” featuring Ella Mai. It features heavy hitters like “What's Free” and “Uptown Vibes.” Meek’s has something for everyone on the album.
He has turned his downfalls to his triumphs and continues to overcome. Meek has returned on the scene, and you can’t deny it. Championships is a celebration and the many supporters who have been waiting patiently.

Where Owls Know My Name - Rivers of Nihil (Album Review)
Tumblr media
Josh Wickins
Let me just start off by saying this: while my music taste and likes are eclectic and diverse, I will always be a metalhead at heart… whether it be early, heavy metal with Black Sabbath, progressive metal with Between the Buried or even hardcore with Code Orange…I love heavy music.
For me, music isn’t just music; it’s a lifestyle. There’s so much feeling, emotion, and passion I feel when I hear the organized chaos that is metal. The blistering guitar, hypnotic blast beats and face melting gutturals, it just seeps into my bones and proves to me again and again just how powerful this music can be. Metal and heavy music flow in my veins and blood, and always will.
All that aside, hearing an album like “Where Owls Know My Name” from Rivers of Nihil, genre-defying yet it still holds true to its metal roots and reignited my passion for metal since I first gave it a spin. Progressive/ Death metal beasts, the similarity in sound from recent tour mates Decapitated, and Revocation, and I’d even say The Contortionist with the way this new album. This album isn’t to be taken lightly and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it win an award for heavy metal within this new year.
Rivers of Nihil offer us a true taste of their musical prowess and willingness to push the boundaries of metal and put out a truly spectacular album that has defied everyone’s expectations as well as, put this band on the radar of metalheads everywhere.
This is the band's third studio album and is by far their best and most cohesive album to date. While holding true to their original sound and metal roots heard on their previous album “Monarchy”, they incorporated a wide variety of new sounds, instruments (most specifically saxophone - which is pulled off masterfully, especially on the track “Subtle Change”), and influences; taking their sound to unimaginable heights.
“Where Owls Know My Name” released March 18, 2018, charted at #57 on the Billboard Top 200 current albums chart, #3 on the Billboard Top New Artist Album chart, and #9 on the Billboard Current Hard Rock Music Albums chart. A truly great and impressive feat for the band, especially in a time where heavy music and metal isn’t as popular, to make it into the Top 200, shows just how amazing this album really is.
Right off the top, in opening track “Cancer / Moonspeak”, you can hear the bands rampant musical progression. Atmospheric, spacey, with captivating clean vocals (Yes, clean vocals on a metal album!), with powerful lyrics such as, “Fear, fear drowns the mind. In this kingdom of mine. And standing in the hall; the faces of them all. Real, like empty space. They know what I became”. This opened the album with a smack in the face and the inclination that this would not be your typical metal album. It leads into the next track “The Silent Life” perfectly. Much like that seamless transition, the whole album flows and blends perfectly into each other. Everything from the instrumentation to the well-crafted lyrics makes this album great. This album takes you from stretches of emotional soundscape experimentation to raw cathartic anger release, which is what music is all about, the feeling you get while listening to it.
Tracks “Terrestria III: Wither” and title track “Where Owls Know My Name” stood out to me the most. Not only for the way my hair stood up on end while listening, or the pit I get in my stomach when I hear something that truly speaks to me musically and emotionally: for the sole fact that this was a metal band taking themselves to entirely new heights, and doing something totally different, and without a doubt pulling it off.
“Terrestria III: Wither”, is just one of those songs that just give you chills, has your head bobbing and ready to go to war. Though all instrumental this track packs a serious punch, it’s what you would imagine being played before a massive spartan battle in the movies: raw, and powerful. River of Nihil has created a sound that is truly their own, while still remaining true to themselves and their genre. They continue to evolve and expand their skill. Rivers of Nihil have put together one the most cohesive and powerful albums I’ve heard in a long time. People always like to claim that metal is just noise and yelling. I’d like these people to play this album and crank it to 11: they will change their mind. Musicianship, talent, and powerful songwriting like this (in my opinion) are what music’s all about.

“6-9’s In Jail and We’re Next… For Fame.” (Ace & The Kid)
Hanna Leary
Tumblr media
Ace &The Kid, comprised of Andrew Vatcher and Adam Tario, has been stirring up the local music scene with their unique blend of cross-genre rock and comedy videos (please consult the band’s Facebook).
Hailing from Peterborough, the duo’s sound incorporates elements of classic rock and folk, while their lyrics and enthusiastic playing style reflect their pop punk-sensibilities.
I had the opportunity to join Ace &The Kid in the studio, while they recorded their track, “Mall Santa” for the MBM Christmas album, due out this month.
“Mall Santa,” evokes every kid’s feelings of meeting some sweaty man in a red suit at the local shopping center with their parents. The tongue-in-cheek lyrics are enhanced by the duo’s use of improvised sounds recorded in the studio.
Working in the studio with Ace & The Kid, was Push Play sound engineers, Nicole, Cassidy, and Keeana, who mixed and edited the track. As the duo describes themselves as being “75% business, 25% music, and 100% business,” there is no room for error.
While the recording process can get tedious, the band kept everyone laughing with their quick wits and positive energy. The energy which doubled, after they suggested everyone gets into the booth, to record some backing vocals/effects for the track.
For an individual who had never stepped inside a recording studio prior, this concept was purely terrifying. What I didn’t know, is that the next few hours would be fuelled by nothing short of pure talent, hilarity and brilliance; which developed into a track that was as fun to make as it is to listen to.
As for what Ace & The Kid hopes their listeners will feel when they hear the song, “I hope [Mall Santa] makes people smile and sing along –takes their minds off things.”
Without giving too much away, I can say with confidence that this comedic track is no joke…” and you can quote me.”
To hear “Mall Santa” and more great tracks created by local artists and MBM students, check out this year’s MBM holiday album, TIZ THE SZN. Copies of TIZ THE SZN, will be available for purchase in the afternoon (11am-2pm) in Vendor’s Alley from December 10thto the 14th. In the meantime, check out Ace & The Kid on Facebook and YouTube, and on Instagram (x).

Tom Boy Records
Juenelle Barkie
Tumblr media
Being part of the MBM program means you are around an outstanding amount of talented human beings. We all have our hopes and dreams that add to our fuel to pave the way for ourselves in and out of the program. Cassie is one of the few who isn’t waiting till they graduate to hit the ground running. While currently a second year in the MBM program Cassie has started a record label at the young age of 19. Despite her quiet nature at school she continues to show why she can be and is a force to be reckoned with.
The Scarborough native, like many in the program, has had music play a ginormous role in her life since she was small. Her dad would play many of his favorite artists ranging from Credence Clearwater Revival to Notorious BIG over to Apache Indian. This helped Cassie find her passion for music and made her want to do something within the music industry.  She might not have become a musician, but she has still followed her passion for music saying, “there’s no other path I can imagine going down.” She continues to do well and enjoy her time in the MBM program but finds it hard sometimes to balance school and the label. Despite her being and school having a new record label that is trying to establish itself, there is still so much to learn.
Tom Boy is an independent record that started in late May of 2018. Cassie mentioned that smaller independent record labels nowadays take on the many roles like Management, A&R, and Production. This was a way for Cassie to be able to take on the many positions in the music industry that she wanted to do. The end goal is to be like Arts & Craft an Independent Record Label in Toronto with more than 100k followers on Facebook. She hopes to achieve a big following not to be popular but to make an impact. She wants to build a platform for people who are belittled or not even present in today’s music industry. Cassie would like others to see themselves represented saying “Growing up I never saw any queer people of colour or even Guyanese people being represented in the music industry, being able to change that would be cool.”
In August, she was able to take a big first step with her label hearing from a member of an Indie Pop band from Montreal who wanted to be signed to her label.  The band Civil House had already conquered their local audience and was looking to venture outwards. By September, Dean Dadidis the lead singer of the band and Cassie were able to both come into agreement about what they wanted for the band. She was able to have her first band signed and released their debut single “Why.” She looks forward to the new year with Civil House since they had recently recorded two new songs that would be released sometime in the new year. Her next goal for the label is to sign an R&B artist or producer from Toronto.
Cassie continues to work hard and show that you don’t need to wait till graduation to achieve greatness you have to start. Her quiet, calm and unique nature aids in her success as a businesswoman and a student. The MBM program has an abundance of magnificent graduates, and she’s already one of them while only being in her second year.

Not All Heroes Wear Capes - Metro Boomin (Album Review)
UG Boyko
Tumblr media
Released by his imprint label Boominati Worldwide and Republic Records, NAHWC delivers mystical melodies & hard hitting 808’s for a guest list of some of the most prominent and current Hip Hop acts including 21 Savage, Gucci Mane, Travis Scott, Swae Lee, Young Thug, Gunna, Wizkid, Kodak Black, Offset & Drake.
Metro Boomin is one of Atlanta’s super producers, working with talented artists ranging from The Weeknd & Lana Del Rey to Kanye West & DJ Khaled.  Not only did Metro Boomin come out of his early retirement at 24 years of age, he also told his fans the release date a few hours prior to its official release.
Predicted to chart #1 on the Billboards and consisting of 13 tracks, NAHWC is Metro Boomin’s 3rdStudio Album. Each song is cleverly blended together, transitioning to the next song without the listener even noticing.
The first song on the album is titled “10AM”, an unbeatable intro to an unmatchable album, where Gucci Mane can be heard singing “gave metro a million, told him not quit”. This comes after a viral video Gucci shared on his Instagram where they can be seen recording in a penthouse kitchen after fans had not seen Metro in months. The songs that follow only allow for us to sink deeper into the album; diversity in where its production and sounds alone will leave you under the influence, the influence of Metro Boomin.
The vintage samples he uses to generate a beautiful immaculate vibe for any music lover, furthermore many of the sounds that can be heard were actual live instruments recorded in a studio. Not only does this tell us what type of artist Metro is, it gives us an idea of how capable – don’t forget he come out of retirement.
Not All Heroes Wear Capes is now available on all major platforms.

YSIV - Logic (Album Review)
Juenelle Barkie
Tumblr media
Logic has returned showing that despite all the fame he shall always stay true to himself. He has had a busy few years from separating with his wife after only two years of marriage, performing at the VMA’s twice and even inviting a group of fans to a private listening of the new album. The Maryland native rapper continues to grow and share his story, and this Album doesn’t fall short.
Logic’s fourth and final installment to his Young Sinatra series was released on September 28, 2018.  The album was a bit of a surprise for his devoted followers since all the previous Young Sinatra’s were Mixtapes; this only help build the anticipation for the record. In true Logic style, he included thank-you messages from his many fans across the world. He tweeted his phone number back in early September of this year telling his fans to call, and they will find out more information as to why. The outpour of messages he received was evident.  When Logic previously featured the messages, they were only from America and Canada. This time around you heard fans from Japan, Australia, South Africa, Israel, Jamaica and more. If that doesn’t show growth, I don’t know what it.
Right out the gates Logic comes in with a trio of songs “Everybody Dies,” “The Return,” and “The Glorious Five.” All three beautifully smooth, hard hitters and lyrically present. You can’t deny that Logic is here for the real Rap music aside from the mumble rap that you mostly hear today. I would have to say “Glorious Five” is my favorite track out of the three. He never leaves anything off of the table laying it all down allowing his listeners to connect to him. One of the most famous tracks on the album is “Wu Tang Forever.” I don’t even know where to start, a person who is still seen as an up and comer having all living members of the most significant rap group ever featured on a track!!! This is entire universes apart from having a Drake feature on your album. Logic was able to hold his own amongst the highly decorated rappers while still playing such a small role in a track like this.
This album has many amazing features and beats. As the Young Sinatra series comes to a close, you can't help but have a greater appreciation for Logic. From living in a home with a drug addict father, seeing domestic violence and more to performing at the VMA’s a while continuously sharing his story and vision. If you don’t like Logic try listening to this album and see what you think, I am sure you will find at least one thing you appreciate about him and his music.

Recap: Breakthru Presents: November Open Mic
Hanna Leary
Tumblr media
If you had the chance to catch Breakthru Event’s Open Mic Night on Thursday, November 1st at Cork & Bean, you witnessed firsthand the level of talent from our own MBM family. For those of you who couldn’t make it, here are some of the highlights.
The night kicked off with incredible takes on some classic tracks (Passenger’s “Let Her Go” anybody?) and showed off a wide range of both vocal talent and musical styles.
Local singer/songwriter Shahana, delivered incredible performances of Khalid’s “Location” and Daniel Ceasar’s “Best Part.” Volume 11 had the opportunity to chat with Shahana about her burgeoning music career in our latest interview, which you can check out here (link article).
Artist Cassidy Jane, wowed the audience with her unique style and performance of Blackberry Smoke’s “Everybody Knows She’s Mine.” Cassidy recently sat down with Volume 11 journalist Josh Wickins, to discuss all things music (link article). In addition, she joined hosts Natasha and Josh as a guest on the latest episode of The Music Vault on Riot Radio, listen here (link show).
Breakthru’s own Matt McCartney and Tess Goulding, took to the stage to showcase their performing chops by channelling Wild Rivers, with their beautiful rendition of Heart Attack. They then switched up to perform a track from the Lumineers. The Breakthru team captivated the stage once more, when member Emily Morris, gave her best Ally Campana a la A Star Is Born. Emily performed 90’s hit “Kiss Me,” followed by “Always Remember Us This Way” from the film.
Returning to the Open Mic Night stage, guitar superstar Klinsvin Gilbert, did not let anybody down with his killer renditions of original songs, “She Make Me Go” and “Something’s Wrong, Something’s Right.” Showcasing his trademark fingerpicking playing-style, Klinsvin’s performances are quickly becoming ones to watch. You can check out both songs, which are available on Spotify.
A big thank you goes to all the artists who performed, as well as to the audience for coming out and showing support to your peers. Additionally, thanks to Breakthru Events for providing MBM students with a monthly opportunity to showcase their musical talents. Breakthru Event’s next Open Mic Night will be held on December 6th, so come out and clap loud!

Shahana (Artist Interview)
Hanna Leary
Tumblr media
I had the pleasure of sitting down with artist and fellow Music Business Management (MBM) alum, Shahana. Shahana is a second-year student in the MBM program at Durham College and has been singing since she was four years old.
HANNA: How did you first become interested in music?
SHAHANA: My mom put me in singing when I was four, and I practiced traditional music until middle school. In middle school, I discovered people posting songs/covers on Youtube as well as karaoke versions of hit songs. I started practicing by singing the karaoke versions of popular songs and eventually I began performing on stage at community centers.
  H: Who are your influences?
S: I was into Destiny’s Child growing up, but my main influences are Beyoncé and M.I.A.. I’m into R&B and R&B/Alternative music.
H: How would you describe your sound?
S: I mostly do R&B, but I experiment with other genres, like Hip Hop, EDM, and R&B/Alternative. I like to get creative and see what works.
H: What artists/albums have you been listening to on repeat?
  S:  I’ve mostly been listening to Ella Mai’s self-titled album and H.E.R..
H: Do you have any favourite playlists (on Spotify or Apple Music)?
S: On Spotify, I listen to the Are & B, Hip Hop Central, and R&B Right Now playlists.
H: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with?
S: I would say, M.I.A.; I love her songs, Sun Showers, World Town, Go Off, and Birdsong.
H: What are your music goals?
S: Working on new music, and hopefully releasing an EP, are my main goals. I also want to ensure that my music spreads and influences people in any way.
H: What do you want people to feel when they hear your music?
S: I want people to have a good feeling when they listen to my music and I want to make sure they are able to vibe with the song.
H: How do you get inspired to create/sing/write?
S: Where I come from, my background is South Asian, there is not too much information on (Western) popular music and music charts. To get inspired, I research artists and learn their songs.
H: What is your favourite part about creating music?
S: My favourite part is the passion that comes when I create/make music. Sometimes, I question how much I can get done with music in a short amount of time, with the recording and writing songs, but we make the process fun. I like to have fun while I’m creating.
H: Do you have any pre-show or post-show routines? How do you prepare for a show?
S: I usually just focus on myself and take deep breaths. I don’t like to talk to people before a show, I just internalize. If there’s a mirror [at the venue], I’ll practice in front of it. After the show, I look back at how I did and find out what my strengths and weaknesses were during my performance. This helps me work towards making [my performances] better.
Be sure to follow her on Instagram @musicbyshahana and keep a look out for her future performances at Breakthru Events’ Open Mic Nights on the first Thursday of every month.

Picking the Mind of Free Mind Operations
Josh Wickins
Tumblr media
I received the opportunity to sit down and talk with Taylor and Shawna of Music Business Management record label, Free Mind Operations to get the low-down on their new artist signings and upcoming Artist Showcase signee event. The Artist Showcase event will be held on November 7th from 7pm-10pm at Simcoe Blues & Jazz in Oshawa. The event will be an opportunity for all fans of music to get to know the latest artist signees, have the artists showcase their skills and songs, a Q&A with the artists, and even getting to watch the signing of their new contracts. First things first, I had to find out exactly who these four new signees were.
First up is University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) student Anne Lawrence. Anne is an R&B artist managed by Madison Smyth of Townline Management. She was signed right after her performance at the last BreakThru open mic night in October, Free Mind was that impressed with her performance. Anne has already written a Christmas song with MBM initiative Emerging Songwriters called Toxic Christmas, that will be a part of the upcoming Holiday album.
Folk/Classic Rock, Country boy duo out of Peterborough, Ontario; Ace & the Kid. Shawna of Free Mind already runs their social media and is well acquainted with the group, so it was an easy choice for her to pitch the band to the label. Managed by Will Borg, again from Townline Management. Already they have quite a following and many original songs. The duo will hit the studio within the next week to record some tracks and add to the aforementioned Holiday album.
Bringing musical diversity to Free Mind, fellow Peterborough resident and Trent University student, Rap artist, “Unlearned” has been signed extruding great excitement and anticipation. Unlearned is now being managed by Ethan and Eric of Millennial Artist Management. Free Mind’s Matt Bell, being friends with Unlearned, knew this was an artist they needed on their roster. With plans to get him in the studio in the foreseeable future to knock out a few tracks, this is an artist to watch out for.
Last but not least, Free Mind Operations is now running marketing for Burlington, Indie-Folk rocker, Dakota Mill. Managed by Matt Bell himself, Free Mind is looking to help take Dakota’s career to the next level. With a recent E.P. that came out in June 2018 and performing during this year’s Indie Music Week in Toronto, Dakota Mill is on the upward trajectory in the Toronto and Durham music scene. He and Free Mind are hoping this partnership is beneficial for both parties as his career continues to blossom.
It was really interesting to see just how excited Free Mind was when talking about all their new signings, to hear their plans to sign at least one or two more artists after the new year and continue to build a diverse and talented roster. Having the artists in their large network already made the recruiting process pretty straightforward, but they are really excited to develop and help out these artists. Free Mind Operations are continuously getting an influx of artists contacting them to get Free Mind to sign them, and it will be awesome to see who Free Mind will add next. The showcase is coming up fast, so make sure you make it down to Simcoe Blues & Jazz and check out this fantastic event and talented musicians.
You can find Free Mind Operations and more about them on all their social media.

Fresh out of Trebas Institute in Toronto in Audio Engineering, UG is following his passion and inevitably gaining success in his personal musical endeavour at and now at Durham College studying Music Business.  He is excited to join Volume 11 & The Music Vault, a team of talented music enthusiasts with a large network, solely to achieve the goal of enlightening ourselves and our followers with elaborate music content.
Below is a list of significant songs both old and new that have significantly impacted UG’s life that he would like to share with you.
Future ft Young Scooter – Special
The hook repeats “you ain't even trying to be special, I thought you was someone special”. At a young age, I used to listen to it on my way to and from school in 2014 in Switzerland. It motivated me and pushed me to be more ambitious to achieve my musician goals.
Gucci Mane – Half
Firstly, in terms of the musical element, the beat, the bounce & the enchanted sample in the background is beyond Pluto, shout out to Will-A-Fool. Behind Gucci talking about how much money, jewelry and enemies he has, the song talks about self-respect and dignity, and others “wanting a piece of your pie”. As a generous person, one’s generosity can lead to them being used for another’s personal gain. It’s a perfectly executed melodic song I will always listen to when the time is right.
Gucci Mane – Hell Yes
Released in 2013, this song is a softer song by Gucci; a rare sight indeed and spills out bundles of emotion. Gucci Mane has never made another song that sounds anything like this, despite a growing catalogue of 12 Studio Albums, 3 Compilation Albums, 1 OST Album, over 70 Mixtapes and over 30 singles! The lyrics and melody combined to allow for a goose bump experience while listening. “Woke up in a mansion, grew up in apartments, and I’m the ***** that broke her heart”
Young Thug - Guarantee ft Ayanis
This is the Mona Lisa of Rap/Trap, this song is a masterpiece in every form. The vocals, the lyrics, the delivery, the concept, the beat by LondonOnTheTrack, it is phenomenal and will definitely any music lovers ear… most of the time. It was never officially released as it was part of Rich Gang Tha Tour Part, a collaborative album by Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan & Birdman in which 104 songs surfaced on the internet before their anticipated album release.
 Young Thug - Hey, I
This is another song displaying Young Thug’s magical artistry. This song is a classic in the hall of greats among Tupac, Notorious BIG, Wu Tang you name it! This song brings memories of 2015 to UG during a period he was in Zimbabwe his home country where his musical career initially started growing. The catchy melodies will leave a fan singing along in no time!
Gucci Mane ft Young Scooter – Don’t Trust
2012 Was the year that changed my destiny forever.  This song indefinitely made me pursue a life in the music industry as an artist instead of writing raps and freestyling for fun. Gucci Mane is a very influential artist to many, not particularly because of his lyricism, instead, his name holds a lot of weight in the music scene and consumer scene which is a discussion for another time.
Alan Silvestri – Reunited
A fun fact is that I listen to classical music from time to time when life isn’t moving so fast.  Solely because of it soothing to the ear and food for the soul.  Of course, one cannot just request the DJ to play Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in a club on a Friday night, which is my situation amongst his family & associates which is why you’ll never hear me openly say it.
Young Dolph – Bulletproof
I guarantee your head will be bobbing your head within seconds with this one. Released in 2017, Independent artist Young Dolph is making more money than many Major artists’s, declined a $22 million dollar deal the following year later in 2018. Young Dolph is in a lane of his own and inspires his followers. The booming 808’s and energy in Dolph’s voice always gets me excited, which eventually leads to everyone around me joining in. This song brings nothing but energy and is not advised on the highway.
Future – Codeine Crazy
If I were to choose an Anthem, this would be it. This song embodies all that makes music great in my view. This song speaks right to you whether one speaks English or can understand Future’s jargon. Music is for the soul and not only for the ears, I feel that way especially about this song in particular.
UG Boyko ft Odyssey – What You Want (WYW)
And the best for last, this is one of my own songs which is expected to release before the end of 2018. Produced by myself, this song is unique, ambient and designed to make a listener press repeat. If you catch me around, I might just play you a snippet.

Cassidy Jane (Artist Interview)
Josh Wickins
Tumblr media
Cassidy Jane from Brampton, Ontario is a dedicated, versatile artist. She’s someone with a clear vision and plan for her future. Someone with a good head on her shoulders for a 20-year-old aspiring musician. She’s the newest artist of BackRow Records, and here to show us she’s the next big music business management success story.
Being around music her whole life, having musician parents, Cassidy has been playing music since she was around 8 or 9 years old. She started to take it seriously shortly after at age 11, by practicing more and collaborating with others. Crafting her singer-songwriter folk sound over the years. She plays a wide assortment of instruments including guitar, keyboard, ukulele, bass guitar as well as being a fantastic vocalist. As of right now she only has a handful of rough, home recordings. But that will not be the case for long.
Highly influenced by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, whom to her is one of the most talented musicians and personifies to her what it’s like to be a performer and touring musician. Also, a huge Bob Dylan fan and even brings it to the modern ages with her love of Black Berry Smoke and rap artist J Cole.
Now after years of jumping between softball player and being an aspiring musician, Cassidy hung up the cleats and glove. Finding it too overwhelming to balance the two and felt that the sport was not allowing her to grow in the way she wanted. She could now put her all into her music and start to create and fulfill her dreams. The first step to that dream was Durham College’s music business management (MBM) program.
Now to fully get her whole story, you have to know that this program was not her first choice. While still in grade 12, she originally had plans to attend school to become a nurse. But after a year off and a change of life, Cassidy knew that this industry was where she was meant to be to fully chase her dreams, her passion, and greatest joy in life. The road so far has not been an easy one though. During her first year in the program, the college went on strike. She described that time to me as “mentally frustrating and full of unknowns”. I could only imagine how tough it must have been, not just for her but for everyone. What she said next though, reiterated just how determined she was, “I’m here, so I might as well keep going”. She didn’t give up, she didn’t succumb to the pressure. She. Just. Kept. Going. I then went on to ask Cassidy what her favourite part of the program is so far, and this is what she had to say. “It’s all been great, the teachers, the people, the content. It’s refreshing to see people eager to succeed”. That answer really stuck out to me, as I feel the same way about being around people who are just as passionate as me; it helps push you to be/do your best when you see others doing the same. Not only is Cassidy here to “learn to be independent and work for me”, but she’s also here to learn from everyone else and feed off their energy to achieve her goals.
This year has brought a lot of new and exciting opportunities for Cassidy Jane. Now managed by fellow first-year student Royce Freeburn of TakeOver Management, she got signed by BackRow Records with great enthusiasm and excitement. BackRow immediately wanted to sign her after contacting her, and it’s been straight uphill from there. Already co-writing a Christmas song for the Holiday Album due out this year with local artist Pat Canavan, which she described as “easy to write with, and felt super organic”.  She’s already planning to get into the studio and start recording song tracks in the very near future.
It was so cool to see just how happy and passionate she was when telling me everything that has been happening in her career so far, and I can’t wait to see what comes next. I went on to ask her what she hopes to learn and achieve from working with BackRow, “I want to gain as much experience as possible, get comfortable in the studio and in songwriting in general. [To] be able to screw up and it not ruin my career”. This showed me that she really is here to not only learn about herself but from everyone around and not waste this great opportunity to work with such a great team of hard-working people.
Confident, passionate, and beyond genuine. This interview not only showed me her drive to become successful but her awareness of everything else around her and all the intricate moving parts that go into becoming a success. You can have the voice or the technical skills of playing an instrument, but if you’re lacking in the most important part of being a musician; your passion and desire to succeed, then all those talents go to waste. Cassidy though, proved that she has all of the above. Watch out world, this is a train you want to hop on now - cause trust me, you’ll be hearing that voice and guitar soon enough. This is only the beginning of Cassidy Jane’s journey.
Find out about all of Cassidy’s upcoming content on the BackRow Records social media!

Cameron Von Criegern (Artist Interview)
Juenelle Barkie
Tumblr media
The music business management program at Durham College is filled with many talented students. It’s a collective of different genres coming together and being represented. Cameron is the leading student in the Country music genre and it’s easy to see why. This year, Cameron has been taken under the wing of Townline Artist Management within the program.
He started out like most kids who fall in love with music; being around it even while in the womb. He has played for as long as he could remember. Being around his dad, family, and friends who play as well. I found it very cute when he shared that his dad was the lead guitarist for his first band. If that is not a supportive dad, I don’t know what is. Cameron, as a natural born artist, shared that he was surprised at how supportive his family and friends were, have spoken with many artists I can say he is not alone.
His focus currently, is honing his talent, pushing the bar, and to go as far as he can with his music. He has the talent, has had great experiences playing live shows, and has an awesome group of mentors he can rely on. His goal? - to write and record as much as possible. Keeping in mind the overall brand that he wants his fans to fall in love with. Within the next couple of months make sure you keep up to date with his socials for his new music that will be released on all streaming platforms. Cameron will be continuing into the new year with video shoots for two covers.
In speaking with him you can see the determination in his eyes and hear his love for the music in his voice. He knows what he wants and is not afraid to go after it. He might be new and young, but he has great things ahead of him. Also, for any students in the Peterborough area on November 30 make your way to The Social for his show, you won’t be let down.

Errorzone by Vein (Album Review)
Josh Wickins
Tumblr media
Errorzone by Vein is finally among us. It’s heavy, it’s hard, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard.
Boston hardcore heavyweights, Vein, released their debut LP Errorzone on June 22, 2018 through Closed Casket Activities. Produced by the almighty Will Putney at Graphic Nature Audio and I feel it is by far one of the greatest albums I’ve heard in a while, from the music to the production. It is absolutely insane.
After three years of writing this album, and only a small handful of releases over their career, Vein absolutely did not disappoint. It was well worth the wait and you can tell just how well-crafted and how much thought and care went into this album. The album delves into many different sub-genres; from blistering hardcore to industrial nu-metal, to beautiful soundscapes, and metal-core. It truly is a work of art, I knew these guys were heavy, and outside the box thinkers/ writers… but, damn; It just completely blew me away by how good this album is.
It’s hard to define this band and album, but you get reminded of so many great bands. From Slipknot, Korn, Deftones, Converge, and recent tour mates Code Orange, this is a band that has spent their entire career honing their craft and skill, and it really does show on the album.
While talking to The Fader, Frontman, Anthony Didio said this about the writing process behind Errorzone. “It’s been in the background of everything we’ve done as a band,”… [Errorzone] was our own private world.” It took so long to make that the sound began to develop back onto itself … along the way, we wrote other music — influenced by our frustration to make this world we imagined real.” (x). This interview is worth a read if you’re into finding out Vein’s thoughts on the album.
Some of the sounds they get out of their instruments are just amazing, and I’m really interested to know what gear they were using (I’m a huge gear enthusiast). The use of samples and synthesizers brought an element to Errorzone that truly make it what it is. Not to mention, drummer Matt Wood is just a beast behind the kit. It was one thing that really stood out to me, he hits, and he hits hard, but with a purpose; really bringing the whole sound together. The vocals on this album are also on another level, taking you from ultra-aggressive gutturals to delicate cleans, alternating between them, and it really made Errorzone what it is: a kick-ass album. It gives you chills when you hear how well it is pieced together. They have a plan, they have a sound, and they have a goal. A fantastic album that fits so many fan’s interests, and a frontrunner for heavy album of the year.
Bands like this are what I live for; genre-defining, hungry, and willing to tell anyone and everyone know just what they are here to do and how they’ll do it their way. Vein is here to kick ass and take names.
After waiting for so long, Vein has finally brought us the sound and message they’ve strived for for so long, and I don’t think they’re going anywhere anytime soon.
Vein has unleashed Errorzone to the world, to bring us into their world, and to be honest… it sounds like a pretty good world for me.

Comeback Kid at The Velvet Underground in Toronto (Live Show Review)
Josh Wickins
Tumblr media
After 10+ years of being a fan of this band, I finally got the chance to see one of my hardcore-punk idols, and they did not disappoint.
Comeback Kid has been and, always will be, one of my all-time favourite hardcore-punk bands. I remember seeing the video for ‘Wake The Dead’, on MuchMusic in 2005 when the video first premiered; it was one of my first introductions into this genre of music, and I was instantly enthralled with it. Getting the chance to finally see them, on the heels of their 2017 release, ‘Outsider’ was unreal, it truly was an amazing experience I’ll never forget. Four bands played, all band crushed it, and the vibe of the entire night was amazing.
The opening band was Mil-Spec (who are Toronto-based). They kicked off the show fast and strong, with a real 90’s hardcore-punk sound, it was the 2-step city from the get-go. For the first two songs, the vocals were far too loud; drowning out the rest of the band, but after a quick level adjustment, their sound was concise for a new band. The vocalist changed between singing styles which gave me a Fugazi vibe and that I can get behind. Personally, I would have liked more aggressive vocals, but it still sounded great. I’m familiar with one of the guitar players in Mil-Spec, and he is still a great musician; catchy riffs, spectacular solos, with great tones and sounds. Having already heard a few of their tracks prior to the show, it was different to see them live doing what they love. Good set, good sound, and steadily gaining momentum in the hardcore punk scene. Go check them out if you ever get the chance.
Hailing all the way from Leeds, UK, Higher Power completely blew me away. They had a melodic-hardcore/ psychedelic-metal vibe, and it was amazing. They had extremely high energy; receiving a rowdy reaction from the crowd. Heavy breakdowns, groovy riffs, and a lot of different sounds and effects that make you want to move.
The only downfalls; the vocals were hard to hear at times, and there was quite a bit of feedback coming from the mic. I think their vocalist is a beast; he has that voice that’s meant to be put to this type of music. It actually reminded me of Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, which is awesome because I love them. Their use of alternating vocals worked really well and packed that extra punch to the songs.
From beginning to end, Higher Power’s set was fantastic. I would highly suggest going to see them and getting into them.
Longstanding hardcore giants from Toronto, No Warning came in to show just what they’re all about; good vibes and good tunes. Saying and I quote “we probably won’t play Toronto ever again after this. We’ve had our say, and we’ve had our time. Going out on good vibes. Love to all”. I really had a treat by seeing what their last show in the city, could very well be.
No Warning is an instant mosh-starting band, reminding me a lot of another legendary band, Terror (they have the same guitar player), as well as where Turnstile may have got their sound from. Listening to them, you can’t help but move around. The vocals sounded fantastic, super crisp, and their whole sound was really well performed.
The energy for the set was insane, between the band and the crowd; everybody was feeling good vibes, getting into the music, stage diving, and moshing.
Now, what a lot of us came here for. Canadian hardcore-punk legends, Comeback Kid!
This set was really was special to me. They performed a bunch of my personal favourite tracks, like ‘False Idols Fall’ and ‘Wake The Dead’. It was extremely nostalgic and reminded me again why I love hardcore and punk so much. Comeback Kid has crafted their own sound over the years and, truly are in a class of their own; amazing riffs, edgy bass, punk beats, and aggressive vocals. The sound was incredibly tight and clean; a flawless representation of skill and how important a good sound person is. I could hear everything perfectly and that makes a huge difference within live music.
The vibe in the room was intense; no one was standing still and the whole band was getting into it. Vocalist, Andrew Neufeld, was constantly pumping up the crowd, riling everyone up, and giving the mic away for the crowd to sing along. It was a true punk show, and I loved it! If you ever get the chance to see Comeback Kid, even if you’ve never heard of them, go, you will not be disappointed.
