Have to〜 / Need to〜
(Hi everyone, sorry I’m not around these days, I simply don’t have the time 😔 Still, I manage to study some Japanese from time to time, and I thought I would share a few notes, since I need to revise!)
First, you’ll need the neutral negative form of the verb・ない形.
Here’s a quick reminder・ない形の作り方:
聞く(きく)> 聞かない
急ぐ(いそぐ)> 急がない
話す(はなす)> 話さない
立つ(たつ)> 立たない
遊ぶ(あそぶ)> 遊ばない
休む(やすむ)> 休まない
帰る(かえる)> 帰らない
使う(つかう)> 使わない
忘れる(わすれる)> 忘れない
見る(みる)> 見ない
する > しない
来る(くる)> こない
Vない + ければなりません / ければならない
This expression means “have to〜/need to〜.”
Using the 〜ない form of the verb, remove the final い and put ければなりません instead (ければならない if you’re being informal, きゃならない if you’re being very casual).
Examples・例
薬を飲まなければなりません。 (くすり を のまなければなりません) You have to take your medicine.
駅に行かなければならない。 (えき に いかなければならない) I have to go the (train) station.
会社を休みますから、電話をかけなければなりません。 (かいしゃ を やすみます から、でんわ を かけなければなりません) Since I’m not going to the office, I need to give them a call.
日本のうちで靴を脱がなければなりません。 (にほん の うち で くつ を ぬがなければなりません) In Japanese houses, you have to take off your shoes.

How do we know entropy exists?
Well, entropy is more of a mathematical concept than a physical one, so its ‘existence’ isn’t really up for debate. Here’s a quick example:
Suppose you have a deck of cards, and you randomly shuffle them. Once you’re done, which outcome is more likely: either the cards happen to be perfectly organized, or they don’t show any pattern?
Clearly, they are more likely to be disorganized, but why? Put simply, it’s because there are more ways a deck of cards can be disorganized, rather than the number of ways it can be organized. In mathematical terms, there are more microstates associated with the macrostate of being disorganized. This is the basic idea behind entropy. I hope this helps!

If you’re still having trouble with transitive and intransitive verbs, just remember that transitive require something to act on something else, while intransitive verbs require action that is independent (the 自 in 自動詞 means “self; oneself”).
勉強頑張ってね!

Japanese Idioms 慣用語句
For the curious the Kanji up there is read as 「かんようごく」. These are some of my favorite idioms because they are the most useful and as a result they are stuck in my head!
猫に小判 [ねこにこばん] Lit. - gold coins to a cat. Meaning - Giving a gift to someone who doesn’t appreciate it.
Comes from the fact that Japanese say cats love round shiny objects such as a gold coin but are ignorant of it’s value or true use.
三日坊主 [みっかぼうず] Lit. - A monk for (just) three days. Meaning - You can’t keep up with a difficult or prescribed routine of some sort.
Like when you say “I’ll work out every day for an hour”, but you end up stopping after three days.
水に流す [みずにながす] Lit. - Let the water flow. Meaning - Forgive and forget.
油を売る [あぶらをうる] Lit. - To sell oil. Meaning - Wasting time or talking in the middle of doing something.
You can apply this daily because I know everyone talks or get’s distracted while studying this language.
石の上に三年 [いしのうえにさんねん] Lit. - On a rock for three years. Meaning - Expect to work on something for a long time(three years) before you see results or expectations fulfilled.
This one applies to everyone studying Japanese. I run into a lot of people that started learning because they wanted to watch their favorite shows in Japanese without subs or dubs, but then stop after about two semesters because they still couldn’t watch anything in “raw format” (Those taking college Japanese will see the drop-off of people from Japanese 2 to Japanese 3 lol.)
