Of course he knows Toshinori. Of course he went in to talk with Stain before Toshinori. And Stain is anything but subtle so there's no question about what was said there...

Everyone else we see who tries to reach out to Toshinori all say the same thing. Just Live. Be good. Be you. That's enough. Inko, Sir Nigheye, Aizawa. They're trying to get him to live. Which is all well and good, but none of it is what Toshinori wants to hear.
