Palestine Deep Dive’s Ahmed Alnaouq talks to UN Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territory Francesca Albanese about the legality of Israel’s interception of the flotilla bound for Gaza.

Albanese says Israel’s actions are totally illegal and that it is obliged to immediately release the activists and return the vessel.

The Madleen was a UK-flagged ship and Albanese called on the British government to take its responsibility for the activists it held and pressure Israel to abide by international law.

But she went further saying that, now the flotilla has been intercepted, the navies of every nation in the Mediterranean, mentioning specifically France, Italy, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Spain should be sent to Gaza to break the siege.

We found Israeli soldiers who were being trained secretly by the UK

Israeli army officers have been allowed to study at a British military academy in central London throughout the Gaza genocide.

At least two Israeli colonels have attended the prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) since 2023.

One of the soldiers, thought to be Elad Edri, only graduated a fortnight ago.

Another officer, Yeftah Norkin, completed the course in July 2024 and almost immediately led the army’s “Bang” division in Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.

Norkin, who comes from an influential military family, commanded a patrol company in Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s 2008-9 war in Gaza which killed hundreds of children.

‘Rising stars’ Established in 1927 as the Imperial Defence College, the RCDS in Belgravia is one of Britain’s most eminent military academies.

From its elegant Georgian building ringed by embassies, the college organises training for “rising stars” among the officer class from the UK and abroad.

While Sandhurst teaches junior army officers, the RCDS mentors mid-ranking troops who have ambitions to climb the chain of command, awarding them a post-graduate certificate in international security studies.

The college describes itself as “a world-renowned institution committed to developing strategic thinkers… who have the potential to reach the highest ranks”.

RCDS alumni include Major General Hidai Zilberman, the former IDF spokesperson and now Israeli defence attaché to the US, and General Harel Knfao, who served as Chief of Staff of Israel’s Southern Command.

With college campuses all over the US gripped by intense battles around free speech, antisemitism and Palestinian rights - the voices of young Jewish Americans have led the way.

One of the boldest and most prominent voices is that of Simone Zimmerman.

Zimmerman was raised in a conservative Zionist household, taught to idolise and support Israel as the highest aspiration of all young Jewish Americans like her.

But as she got older, she began to question whether there was another side to Israel she was being sheltered from - and when she sought answers, she was shocked at what she discovered.

Prompted by conversations with Palestinians under occupation and Jewish activists, she went home and began to organise in an attempt to stop her government’s military support for Israel, and as she puts it, “live out the values of justice I was raised on”.

On the frontlines of protests in campuses and halls of power, she suddenly found herself a target of accusations by pro-Israeli groups, who now called her “antisemitic” and threatening her online.

After 7 October, she became more determined than ever to challenge the beliefs in her community about Israel, and the reluctance by many to see the horrific reality of what’s happening in Gaza.

This segment critically examines the US GBU-57 bunker buster bomb, its claimed capabilities, and the real-world limitations in using such weapons against deep, hardened, and potentially cleverly designed Iranian underground facilities.

The Claims The GBU-57 (Massive Ordnance Penetrator) weighs 13,608 kg, with 2,268–2,722 kg of explosives, designed to penetrate up to 61 metres, into reinforced concrete or rock before detonation. The claim is that it can reach and destroy underground facilities such as nuclear enrichment sites.

The Reality These claims are likely overstated or misunderstood, especially by political decision-makers misinformed by defense contractors or military briefers. The bomb must hit very close to or directly above a target, such as a tunnel or chamber, to do meaningful damage. A blast cavity from the explosion is ~20–30 metres wide. If the actual tunnel is offset by more than that (30+ metres horizontally or vertically), it won't be affected.

Design Misassumptions US attack models assume Iranian bunkers are simple, vertical shafts, but: Real underground bunkers may use offset tunnels, angled passages, or be built into irregular terrain like hills, making direct hits extremely unlikely. Example: Iran's Fordow facility is buried under a hill, making perpendicular impact very difficult.

Concrete Deflection Techniques Studies (including by Chinese researchers) show that angled concrete structures (eg diamond-shaped cross-sections) can cause incoming munitions to deflect by up to 25°. The front of the bomb slows upon angled impact, while the rear continues, causing it to twist off course. This concept is similar to tank armor design, which uses inhomogeneous or spaced layers to divert and reduce damage from penetrating munitions.

Strategic Warning US entered into the Iran-Israel conflict. Trump’s confidence in US capabilities may be based on misleading briefings, especially regarding:

Conclusion Iran’s engineers are likely aware of US strike doctrines and have probably designed facilities accordingly. Targeting and destroying such bunkers is much harder than presented - and success requires extremely accurate intelligence and direct-hit capability, which may not exist. Overall, the faith in bunker buster success is questionable, and US political leaders may be basing decisions on overly optimistic or flawed assumptions
