INKFISH AND GENDER

Cephalopods (and most species in the Mollusc era tbh) have a very different view of identity and self-expression to humans, and I'd thought i'd make this post to yap endlessly regarding my ideas and speculations on the matter.

For most (ofc not all, but historically-speaking most) humans, gender and sex tend to be closely correlated, with most people tending to identify with whatever was assigned to them at birth, an observation made based on biological sex/sexually dimorphic characteristics.

However, most inkfish species don't have any sexual dimorphism! When a cephalopod egg hatches, there’s literally no way to tell the sex of the infant without a DNA test, rendering gender assignment essentially pointless.

As such in most inkfish societies, biological sex and "gender" are completely divorced from each other. Hell, their languages don't even have any kind of gendered terminology! They literally do not have gender or even know what a gender is. This also applies to many other creatures with low/nonexistent sexual characteristics (eg. urchins, jellyfish, some crustaceans).

To the common inkling, the concept of a 'goth' or a 'hipster' are more akin to their concepts of gender than anything even remotely related to biological sex. To them, a "gender" is purely represents someone's stylistic presentation, indicating nothing about whether they can lay eggs or not. That's what they use lures for (this is real btw).

I yoinked this from another artwork but it gets my point across. Generally, inkfish presentation is extremely diverse and is often difficult to explicitly define as “masculine” or “feminine”, as those concepts don’t even exist in their world nor does it influence the way they express themselves.

Granted, this isn't to say that ALL peoples of the Molluscan Era are set up this way, in fact a good amount of other creatures (many fish, some crustaceans etc.) have traditions that at least somewhat (it's complicated) reflect human concepts of gender.

I'm just saying that these tend to be a minority given that the overwhelming majority of Splatoon's species have little-to-no differences between males and females, and as such never ended up developing societal norms around it. (Or they may circumvent gonochorism/the bi-sex system entirely but that's an entirely different can of worms.)
