Callum knelt in front of his rules, swaying from the impact of his Master’s shoe in his side. He had slept through the unlocking of the basement door. He had slept through his Master walking down the steps. He had been so exhausted that the only thing that had woken him had been Master Hayden stamping down on his side. He had slammed into consciousness full force and screaming while Master Hayden had dragged him, gasping for air and winded, into the centre of the basement.

“You can consider that the start to a blue day unless you buck your ideas up,” Master Hayden hissed at him. “And as much as I’d love to spend the day decorating you top to toe in bruises I’m a very busy man. It wouldn’t kill you to acknowledge how hard I work.”

“Thank you,” Callum wheezed, still catching his breath. “Thank you Master Hayden… thank you for…umm… you h… hard work.”

“My hard work is what keeps a roof over your head so you can stop looking so wretched about it.”

Callum ducked his head and nodded.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

“Oh hon,” a nurse looked down at him on the floor and closed the door of his cell again.

A moment later, Sean had appeared in her place.

“You’re best with him,” Alfie heard from the hallway.

Alfie miserably lifted his head to look at the orderly standing before him, unwilling, not unable, to say anything. The mess in front of him spoke for itself.

“Hey bud, Cheryl said you needed help.” Sean gingerly closed the door behind him, careful to make it quiet.

Alfie only closed his eyes for a moment, “I don’t know what happened. Am I in trouble?” He was once caught trying to lose his lunch to get rid of the pills he was forced to take. He shuddered at the memory of the consequences.
