How to use the peak controller in FL Studio (Tutorial)

How to use the peak controller as a side-chain in FL Studio (Tutorial)

FL Studio peak controller in action A useful tip is to use the FL Studio peak controller in to create a Side-chain effect. It has a couple of advantages of using it this way instead of using Gross beat (Gross Beat). Those are: You can adjust the volumes and movement speed in a more precise and in a more visual way If you make music with more complex kick patterns, it's easier to change the kick pattern and make variations
Setting up the peak controller in FL Studio
It's a bit difficult to setup the peak controller in FL Studio. If you follow each step it should work. Let's begin. Select channel 4 and rename it "Peak controller" Rename mixer channel 5 to "Kick" Choose channel 10 and channel 11 and call those Sound 1 and Sound 2 Select channel 5 (Kick) and add the peak controller plugin here This is the tricky part. Right click the fader from channel 4 (Peak controller). See image 1.

Image 1. Right click the fader and select "link to controller" Select "Link to controller". A small window pops up. Select "inverted". If you don't do this, the fader will go up instead of down when the kick hits. See image 2. Select "Peak and LFO" in the select-box which says "none" by default. See image 3.

Image 3. Select “Peak + LFO”. If you followed the steps correctly everything should work. To test this you can add bass and a string in channel 10 and 11. Route the channels 10 and 11 through channel 4. Check How to route mixer channels in FL Studio about routing channels in FL Studio. Add a kick sample to channel 5. You should created a situation when a kick hits, the fader of the channel will go down. Any sound routed through channel 4 "peak controller" will pushed to background when a kick hits. For electronic dance music it is a must to a side-chain effect. It is also useful for other genres.
The peak controller tension button
One function you might notice when you at at the peak controller is the tension button. One way to visualize the working of it is to see it as a gross beat line, like in the example of image 4.

Image 4. Gross beat example fl studio. The tesion function is comparable with the line in gross beat. I hope you have learned something, if you have any questions just ask. Sign up for my mailinglist if you like to stay updated.

3 Useful FL Studio tips you might not know (yet)

Some of the links are not working yet, will be updated soon
3 Useful FL Studio tips you might not know (yet)
There is a lot to learn when you produce music. You will probably use these FL Studio tips if you don't know them already. Over the years I collected some useful tips form other producers in real life and from online video's on Youtube. I'll share 3 tips which I think are not easy to find on other websites. I wish I learned them earlier and that's why I share them with you. It will give you more possibilities and will improve your mix (if you don't know them already).
1. Using the Peak controller as a side-chain effect in FL Studio

FL Studio peak controller in action A very useful FL Studio tip is to use the peak controller to create a side-chain effect. It has a couple of advantages of using it this way instead of using Gross beat (Gross Beat) in FL Studio. Those are: You can adjust the volumes and movement speed in a more precise and in a more visual way You will have a easier life if you make music with more complex kick patterns and it is more easy to adjust the kicks afterwards Check out this Tutorial about using the peak controller in FL Studio
2. Adjust the volume of the samples in the browser of FL Studio
This second FL Studio tip isn't the most difficult but it useful if you don't know it yet. Personally I like to produce with a lot of headroom. I produce with volumes between -6db and -10 db. If you click samples in the browser they are louder then the track. Check out this post if you want to know How to adjust the volume of samples in the browser in FL Studio and following the instructions.
3. Automate any button of any vst in FL Studio

Automate any vst button in FL Studio: Select "browse parameters" This trick is very useful. I don't think many producers use it so it might gives you an edge if you know this valuable tip. In FL Studio it is possible to automate any button of any vst plugin. Yes, also third party plugins. If you want to know how this works checkout this tutorial called How to automate any button of any vst in FL Studio. That's it! I hope you have learned some new things.
