Victorian drag portraits, anyone?

These photos (1, 2, 3) from the James Gardiner Collection are open access and available to view on JSTOR courtesy of the Wellcome Collection.

Dating from the 1850s to 1890s, the hand-colored portraits come from a Victorian album of 35 cartes de visite showing private and theatrical female impersonation. While many of these performances were intended as entertainment, the images also gesture toward gender nonconformity and queer expression.

Reading fanfics counts as reading and, yes, it's okay to be a fanfic writer who only reads fanfics.

By definition, reading is the act of decoding written symbols to extract meaning or gain knowledge. Being a reader is engaging with text.

I've heard a lot of people say "I don't read" and yet they consume several fanfics every day. Yes, reading fanfics is reading too. You read and you're a reader.

In the same way, if you're a fanfic writer who only reads fanfics, it's okay. You don't need to read fancy literature anymore to learn how to write well or to improve your grammar/spellings/vocabulary.

I'm not only saying this because I'm a fanfic writer, but there are some actually amazingly written fanfics out there these days that readers can learn from.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; if you want to write perfect fanfics, you're allowed to do so, but there's no gun to your head about it.

Fanfic culture is supposed to be a fun, enjoyable, light-hearted and playful thing. Write whatever you want write, whenever, however and in whatever way wanna write it.

You don't need to be well read to qualify to be a fanfic writer
