One a day translations have gone to the wayside after 2017, which is something I plan on fixing asap. Along with there, there are many translations I’ve done which are lacking a certain flow, and now is a great time to edit them!

Over the next few months I’ll be doing a mix of one a day translations and one a day edits, going through previously translated content and fine tuning it.

Fin 2014, Christopher Hughes de BoatTEST.com a passé deux jours en France pour visiter plusieurs des usines BENETEAU situées en Vendée.

 A travers deux de ces usines, le laboratoire d'essai et l’ébénisterie, BoatTEST a pu étudier les processus de fabrication et les matériaux employés dans la construction de tous les voiliers et bateaux à moteur Beneteaux, et ont pu s’entretenir avec plusieurs employés clé de la société.

Christopher Hughes admet avoir été très impressionné par le niveau d'organisation et le soin apporté par chacun des membres de l'équipe à chaque étape du processus. Christopher Hughes a par ailleurs noté : "Le niveau de détail appliqué à l’engagement de la qualité est l'un des plus élevé que j’ai pu voir au cours de plus de 160 visites d’usines dans le monde."

Late 2014, Christopher Hughes from BoatTEST.com spent two days in France to visit several BENETEAU plants located in Vendée.

Through two of these plants, the test lab and cabinet making plant, BoatTEST could study the manufacturing process and the materials used in the construction of all Beneteau sail boats and motor boats, and were able to speak with several key employees in the company.

Christopher Hughes admits to have been very impressed by the level of organization and care taken by each team member at each step in the process. Christopher Hughes also noted "The level of detail applied to the commitment to quality is one of the highest that I could have seen during more than 160 visits to plants around the world."

BILLET - Dans le petit monde du hockey, l'annonce de l'échange ayant envoyé Max Pacioretty à Vegas n'a pas été la nouvelle la plus étonnante de la journée. Tôt ou tard, l'ex-capitaine allait bien finir par quitter Montréal. En fin d'après-midi, par contre, quand les Golden Knights ont annoncé que Pacioretty avait signé une prolongation de contrat, bien des observateurs sont restés pantois.

Pour un athlète professionnel, le but du jeu consiste à monétiser son talent au maximum. Et à ce chapitre, pour quiconque s’intéresse aux finances du sport, la carrière de Max Pacioretty passera probablement à l’histoire comme un exemple de mauvaise gestion.

En 2012, Pacioretty a commis une erreur stratégique majeure. Il a conclu une très mauvaise affaire. Alors qu’il était âgé de 24 ans et qu’il venait de connaître une saison de 33 buts, le futur capitaine du Canadien avait accepté une entente de six ans (27 millions) prenant fin au printemps 2019, quand il aura 30 ans. À l’époque, son agent était Alex Schall.

Généralement, les joueurs d’élite de la LNH obtiennent le droit à l’autonomie vers l’âge de 27 ans. Après leur premier contrat (de trois ans) dans la grande ligue, les joueurs signent des ententes-passerelles qui les mènent jusqu’à ce qu’ils obtiennent le droit à l’autonomie, ce qui leur procure un rapport de force optimal. Parfois, une équipe tient à un joueur au point de vouloir lui acheter d’avance des années d’autonomie. Ces années se vendent alors à un prix très élevé.

Si Pacioretty avait négocié une entente-passerelle en 2012, il se serait présenté sur le marché de l’autonomie après avoir réussi des campagnes de 33, 15 (en 44 matchs en raison d’un lock-out), 39 et 37 buts. Les portes du coffre-fort se seraient toutes grandes ouvertes.

En lieu et place, depuis 2012, Pacioretty a touché 4,5 millions par saison, alors qu’il a été le 10e meilleur buteur de la LNH. Les autres marqueurs du même acabit ont en moyenne encaissé plus de 8 millions par saison. Pacioretty a donc laissé au moins une douzaine de millions lui filer entre les doigts.

Sans compter que ce mauvais contrat n’a jamais cessé de le hanter. Depuis son association avec Alex Schall, il a été représenté par trois autres agents : Lewis Gross, Pat Brisson et maintenant Allan Walsh.

En juin dernier, au repêchage de la LNH, Pacioretty était représenté par Pat Brisson quand les Kings de Los Angeles ont complété un échange avec le Canadien afin d’acquérir ses services. Pacioretty avait lui-même choisi Los Angeles comme terre d’accueil. Cet échange était toutefois conditionnel à ce qu’il accepte une prolongation de contrat.

La première offre des Kings (les mots « première offre » sont ici très importants) s’élevait à 36 millions pour 6 ans. Compte tenu des états de service de Pacioretty, ces paramètres auraient sans doute pu être bonifiés assez substantiellement. La discussion commençait à 6 ans et 36 millions.

Dans la LNH, des directeurs généraux interrogés estimaient sa valeur à quelque chose comme 45 millions pour 7 ans.

Jugeant qu’on tentait de l’embaucher au rabais, Pacioretty a toutefois mis fin aux négociations et aux discussions avec les Kings. Et sa relation d’affaires avec Brisson a pris fin sur cette étrange note. Dès le lendemain, l’attaquant était représenté par Allan Walsh.

COLUMN - In the small world of hockey, the announcement that a trade had sent Max Pacioretty to Vegas wasn't the most surprising news of the day. Earlier or later, the ex-captain was going to finish up by leaving Montreal. In the late afternoon, however, when the Golden Knights announced that Pacioretty had signed an extended contract, many observers were stunned.

For a professional athlete, the goal of the game consists of monetizing your talent to the max. And in this chapter, for whoever is interested in sport finance, Max Pacioretty's career will probably go down in history as an example of poor management.

In 2012, Pacioretty committed a major strategic error. He made a very bad deal. While he was 24 years old and he came to know a season with 33 goals, the future Canadien's captain had accepted an agreement for 6 years (27 million) ending in Spring 2019, when he will be 30 years old. At the time, his agent was Alex Schall.

Generally, elite NHL players obtain the right of autonomy around 27 years old. After their first contract (3 years) in the big league, the players sign walkaway-contracts which they keep until they obtain the right to autonomy, which gives them an ideal ratio of power. Sometimes, a team has a player to the point they want to buy him years of autonomy in advance. These years sell for a very high price.

If Pacioretty had negotiated a walkaway-contract in 2012, he would have been available on the autonomous market after having 33 successful campaigns, 15 ( in 44 lock-out matches), 39 and 37 goals. The doors to the safe would have been wide open.

Instead, since 2012, Pacioretty grabbed 4.5 million a season, even though he was the 10th best goal scorer in the NHL. Other shooters of the same type had on average packed away more than 8 million per season. So Pacioretty let at least 12 million slip through his fingers.

Not counting that this bad contract would never cease to haunt him. Since his association with Alex Schall, he was represented by three other agents: Lewis Gross, Pat Brisson and now Allan Walsh.

Last June, during the NHL draft, Pacioretty was represented by Pat Brisson when the Los Angeles Kings had completed a trade with the Canadiens in order to acquire his services. Pacioretty had himself chosen Los Angeles as a home. This trade was however conditional on if he would accept an extended contract.

The first offer from the Kings (the words "first offer" are very important here) was raised to 36 million for 6 years. Given Pacioretty's service record, these factors could probably have been improved quite substantially. The discussion started at 6 years and 36 million.

In the NHL, general directors surveyed estimated his value at something like 45 million for 7 years.

Judging by the attempt to hire him at a discount, Pacioretty ended negotiations and discussions with the Kings. And his business relationship with Brisson ended on this strange note. The next day, the forward was represented by Allan Walsh.

J’étais dégoutée d’être autant affectée par leurs attentes. J’étais encore plus honteuse de ne pas savoir refuser leur soutien. Le samedi précèdent, a quatre heures du matin, en pleine insomnie, j’avais décidé de tout arrêter pour ouvrir un bar. Ou pour vendre des fleurs. Ou pour prendre soin des vieux de ma famille. Le lendemain, j’avais reçu un coup de téléphone de mon parrain qui me proposait de me prêter son chalet pour la semaine. Pendant quelques secondes, je m’étais trouvée dans une position délicate. Je lui en voulais de remettre en question une décision qui avait été si difficile à prendre. Je l’avais écouté décrire les avantages du lieu, pendant que défilaient dans ma tête les vies nouvelles envisagées durant la nuit. La volte-face avait été rapide. Finalement, la décision d’arrêter n’était peut-être pas si courageuse. Je me mentais sans doute à moi-même. Au moins, je m’en rendais compte. Au fond, je n’avais pas vraiment flanché. Une petite panique, c’était tout. Maintenant, une ouverture se présentait : le calme, la nature, la solitude. J’étais partie avec la voiture de ma mère.

In the end, the decision to stop perhaps wasn't that brave. I had been lying to myself no doubt. At least, I held myself accountable. Fundamentally, I hadn't really failed. A little panic, that was all. Now, a new beginning was presenting itself: calm, nature, solitude. I left with my mother's car.

Sadly, my hopes of pleasant revelation crumbled as the days strung on. The first morning, coffee in hand, I had started the day watching an old documentary on Acadie. The atmosphere of the film without a narrator moved me deeply. I felt called to do great things. I made a another cup of coffee. An action film hung around the DVD player. It must've belonged to my cousin.

J’avais passé la semaine en solitaire dans la région. J’étais en quatrième année de thèse et mon entourage voulait encore plus que moi que je la termine. Si je n’avais pas décidé un jour d’entreprendre ce travail absurde, je ne sais pas si j’aurais jamais réalisé à quel point les gens sont viscéralement incapables de penser autrement qu’en termes de réussite et d’échec. En tout cas, chaque conversation sur le sujet de mon errance intellectuelle tendait à me faire comprendre l’importance de terminer ce qu’on a commencé. Du moins, si l’on souhaite pouvoir continuer à se regarder dans le miroir le matin.

At least, if one wants to continue to be able to look at themselves in the mirror in the morning.

Je n’avais pas les clés de la maison. Je me doutais bien que j’allais arriver avant eux.  Attendre me mettait toujours dans un drôle d’état. Je ne pouvais rien faire de ma peau. L’anticipation orientait toutes mes pensées.  Ce jour-là, le beau temps me rendait encore plus minuscule. Il était dix-sept heures. Le soleil resplendissait encore. La demeure se fondait dans le paysage vallonne. Les parents d’Alexandre l’avaient récemment achetée à une vieille dame anglaise, que j’imaginais très élégante. C’était une maison traditionnelle des Cantons-de-l’Est. En bois, peinte en blanc, avec une longue galerie sur la façade. Le terrain était séparé de la derrière la maison, vers un boise. Félicie m’avait parlé des lieux avec émotion, comme si elle les fréquentait depuis toujours. Lors de sa première visite, le père d’Alexandre avait remarqué sur les murs des photos d’un politicien canadien célèbre, rayonnant sur la balançoire de la galerie, les bras charges d’enfants.

I didn't have the house keys. I really doubted that I would arrive before them.  Waiting always puts me in a funny mood. I couldn't do anything with my skin. CALGARY | Le Canadien avait gagné ses six derniers matchs. Les Flames avaient remporté leurs sept dernières parties. Une des deux équipes devait freiner sa lancée. Sur Twitter, ils sont une nouvelle fois assez nombreux à crier leur sentiment d'injustice. Les hommes aussi se mobilisent pour défendre leurs droits, ce qui implique d'avoir une journée qui leur est destinée. "Le féminisme parle d'égalité, alors où est la journée internationale des Hommes?", interroge l'un d'eux.

Ça tombe bien, ils en ont une. Pour ceux qui sembleraient avoir loupé l'information, l'auteure de la saga "Harry Potter" publie sur son compte Twitter un petit rappel. "Heureuse journée internationale des Femmes, ou, comme on l'appelle ici la 'Pourquoi il n'y a pas de journée internationale des Hommes'. Il y en a une: le 19 novembre", explique J.K. Rowling

Cette remarque est d'ailleurs partagée par plusieurs internautes, qui ne manquent pas de souligner que le 19 novembre est aussi la journée mondiale des toilettes.

On Twitter, there are again many who shout their feelings of injustice. Men move to defend their rights as well, implying they should have a day for themselves. “Feminism is about equality, so where is International Men’s Day?” asks one of them.

As it turns out, there is one. For those who feel they’ve missed information, author of the Harry Potter saga published a little reminder on her Twitter account. “Happy International Women’s Day, or, as some call it ‘Why isn’t there an international Men’s day.’ There is one: November 19″, explains J.K. La gardienne des Canadiennes de Montréal Charline Labonté a été très solide devant son filet pour permettre à son équipe de remporter la Coupe Clarkson en vertu d’un gain de 3-1 aux dépens de l’Inferno de Calgary, dimanche à Ottawa.

Les joueuses du club montréalais ont ainsi mis fin à une séquence de trois défaites lors du match ultime. Elles ont par ailleurs pris leur revanche face à l’Inferno, qui leur avait infligé un cuisant revers par la marque de 8-3, lors de l’édition précédente.

«Après la performance de l'année passée, on a modifié certains éléments, a indiqué l’entraîneur-chef Dany Brunet. Ça n'a pas été une saison facile, mais comme on peut voir, à plus long terme, ça a été bénéfique.»

Il s’agit d’une quatrième Coupe Clarkson pour la concession. Elle avait été sacrée championne en 2009, 2011 et 2012.

The Montréal players had finally ended a 3 game loosing streak with their ultimate match. They had otherwise taken their revenge against the Inferno, who had inflicted a painful comeback with a score of 8-3, during the previous match.

“After last years performance, we modified some elements,” said head coach Dany Brunet. “It wasn’t an easy season, but as you can see, in the long run, it was beneficial.”

It seems like a fourth Clarkson Cup for the franchise. It (the franchise) had been the sacred champion in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Le sohlob

Cette boisson est associée à plusieurs pays du Moyen-Orient et du Nord de l’Afrique mais la version que j’ai choisie est celle que j’ai consommée en Égypte, plus précisément à Dahab, dans le désert du Sinaï, près d’Israël. Le sahlab égyptien est constituée d’un mélange de lait chaud, de cannelle, de noix de coco râpée, de sésame et d’épices avec sur le dessus des noix broyées. Miam!! C’est un dessert en soi dont l’origine serait libanaise ou turque. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas réussi à trouver précisément l’origine de cette boisson. Son nom d’origine est salep qui veut dire orchidée. Il semblerait qu’initialement la recette voulait qu’on infuse la poudre de cette fleur avec du lait chaud et de la cannelle.

This drink is usually associated with the Middle East and Northern Africa but the version that I chose is the one I drank in Egypt, more precisely in Dahab, in the Sinai desert, close to Israel. Egyptian sahlab is made up of a mix of hot milk, cinnamon, grated coconut, sesame and spices topped with ground nuts. Yum!! It’s a dessert with an Lebanese or Turkish origin.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to precisely identify the origin of this drink.  It’s original name is salep which means orchid. It seems that initially the recipe wanted to infuse the powder of the flower with hot milk and cinnamon.

In January, Montreal Canadiennes forward Ann-Sophie Bettez propelled herself into third place for scoring in the LCHF (League Canadien de Hockey Féminin), thanks to her deadly shot. Of the 35 points that she’s accumulated to this point, 15 were obtained in January, of which one hat trick and two assists totaling five points against the Boston Blades on January 8th. Still in January, she was nominated First Star of the match twice, Second Star twice, and Third Star once.

Project #2 revised...

So I said I was going to translate a novel - I fibbed a little. To get back to my roots and work on the translation chops that I’ve been lacking, I’ve decided to start up the ‘1 a day’ system again. This time though, I hope to focus on more defined subjects (tbd) and hopefully get in the swing of regular, high quality translations. Edits of previous translations may also come into play, as I look back on some from a couple years ago and they’re pretty crappy...here we go!

Day 365: Last day!

Et voilà, c'est fini! Après une année des traductions, je suis vraiment fière à dire que j'ai accompli ce défi.  Pendant l'année, je réalisais que ce n'est pas toujours facile, mais je suis vraiment contente d'accomplir ce projet.  Aujourd'hui n'est pas le dernier jour de traduction, mais le dernier jour de ce projet initial.  Merci pour me suivre, j'espère que je peux continuer de fournir des articles et traductions interessants!

And just like that, it's finished!  After a year of translations, I am really proud to say that I've accomplished this challenge.  During the year, I realized that it's not always easy, but I'm really happy to accomplish this project.  Today is not the last day of translating, but the last day of this initial project.  Thanks for following me, I hope that I can continue to supply interesting articles and translations!
