I think people underestimate the amount of depth a character needs to be compelling. They write these flat characters and then wonder why no one is interested in them. They apply real world morality to fiction and then wonder why it's so boring.

Yeah for sure. Some stories are fine with flat characters because the characters aren't the point but like.... lately I've seen a lot of romance stories with the mildest characters who are like either just a little bratty or weird or quirky or just the tiniest bit dark and it's like... their whole thing. If the story is character driven then add some character to it damn it.

Plus the morality thing please stop doing that. Like yes make your good characters good but acknowledge that if they aren't flawed in some way they're going to suck.

Sometimes people write the blandest characters and then try to give them a villain arc like okay... but where's the darkness coming from though?

Maybe the reason some users don’t get a lot of notes is because they’re just not good at writing. Not everyone has the skill or creativity for it.

I mean of course that's always a possibility. I mean either way the best thing they can do is to keep writing.

We all suck in some way at it, and we all sucked more when we first started. It's just how it goes unfortunately.

It's very disheartening when my memes get so many notes and then art and writing I put my heart into gets ignored. Not even a like? Guess I'll shut up then.

Yeah this is true and honestly why I don't post my own work anymore. I'm not saying you shouldn't, because you absolutely should, but if it affects you too much emotionally it might be worth taking a break from it. I learned to like my writing for myself and it wasn't easy but it helped. Not that you asked for advice, sorry.

It's so hard to get ignored when you put a ton of work into something, I feel that.

It's why it's so important to reblog. No one is getting paid to write on tumblr/ao3, so it's hard for it to feel worth it sometimes.

I hate flowery writing I hate long ass sentences I hate dramatic phrasing where it doesn't make sense its so boring it's so boring oh my god what is happening in the story? IDK BC THE AUTHOR WENT OFF SOMEWHERE ELSE and it's been so long I forgot what the fuck is happening!

If you can't root for someone who kind of sucks I don't know what to tell you about how real people work.

I haven't harassed anyone and I never would. I post my opinions that's it. That's not harassment unless you enjoy purposefully taking things personally. Sorry if I've offended, I don't think I've been rude on anyone else's posts but if I'm wrong, please correct me.

Spicy writing opinion (if you take them):

3rd person present tense is rarely used well and often sounds very abrupt and awkward.

I definitely take them, and if I don't agree I'll let you know 🖤

I think the reason tenses can sound weird is because they're not the best fit for their genre and aren't matching the mood.

Also, people do fall into telling over showing a lot with 3rd person present, in my opinion. Which is fine for genres like action, but if they're writing a flowery romance it might be harder.
